Book Synopsis Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Test Results for Al-Li 2195 Parent Metal, Variable Polarity Plasma Arc Welds and Friction Stir Welds by : Robert A. Hafley
Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Test Results for Al-Li 2195 Parent Metal, Variable Polarity Plasma Arc Welds and Friction Stir Welds written by Robert A. Hafley and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue crack growth rate of aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloy 2195 plate and weldments was determined at 200°F, ambient temperature and -320°F. The effects of stress ratio (R), welding process, orientation and thickness were studied. Results are compared with plate data from the Space Shuttle Super Lightweight Tank (SLWT) allowables program. Data from the current series of tests, both plate and weldment, falls within the range of data generated during the SLWT allowables program.
Book Synopsis Effects of Changing Stress Amplitude on the Rate of Fatigue-crack Propagation in Two Aluminum Alloys by : C. M. Hudson
Download or read book Effects of Changing Stress Amplitude on the Rate of Fatigue-crack Propagation in Two Aluminum Alloys written by C. M. Hudson and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of fatigue tests with specimens subjected to constant amplitude and two-step axial loads were conducted on 12-inch-wide sheet specimens of 2024-T3 and 7075-T6 aluminum alloy to study the effects of a change in stress level on fatigue-crack propagation. Comparison of the results of the tests in which the specimens were tested at first a high and then a low stress level with those of the constant-stress-amplitude tests indicated that crack propagation was generally delayed after the transition to the lower stress level. In the tests in which the specimens were tested at first a low and then a high stress level, crack propagation continued at the expected rate after the change in stress levels.

Book Synopsis The Influence of Water-displacing Organic Corrosion Inhibitors on the Fatigue Behaviour of 2024-T3 Alclad Aluminium Alloy Bolted Joints by : A. S. Machin
Download or read book The Influence of Water-displacing Organic Corrosion Inhibitors on the Fatigue Behaviour of 2024-T3 Alclad Aluminium Alloy Bolted Joints written by A. S. Machin and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some aircraft manufacturers and operators have attempted to control in-service corrosion by the use of water-displacing organic inhibitors which can be either brushed or sprayed onto corrosion-susceptible areas of the structure. However, because of the low surface tension and lubricating properties of these preparations, concern has been expressed as to their potential side-effects on the fatigue performance of bolted and riveted joints. Fatigue tests were carried out in repeated tension under both constant-amplitude and multi-load-level sequences on several types of 8-bolt double-lap joint specimens of 2024-T3 alclad aluminum alloy sheet. Contrary to the findings of previous investigations into the effect of inhibitors on riveted joints, the two corrosion inhibitors used were found, in general, to have either no effect or a beneficial effect on the fatigue lives of bolted joints, It is concluded that the specific effects of a water-displacing organic corrosion inhibitor on fatigue strength of joints are likely to be dependent on the type of joint, its configuration and on the severity of the load spectrum involved.

Book Synopsis Mechanical and Microstructural Effects in Fretting Fatigue of Ti-6Al-4V by : Brett Page Conner
Download or read book Mechanical and Microstructural Effects in Fretting Fatigue of Ti-6Al-4V written by Brett Page Conner and published by . This book was released on 2000-10-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fretting fatigue is the repetitive sliding of contacting surfaces at small displacements and can cause cracking that leads to failure in the presence of a bulk fatigue load. Dovetail joints in gas turbine engines are particularly susceptible to fretting fatigue and are the motivation for this study. Experiments are conducted in ambient air utilizing a sphere-on-flat contact geometry since its contact mechanics are well known. The effect of changing critical contact and bulk loading parameters are examined in depth for a mill annealed and solution treated overaged variants of Ti-6Al-4V. Parameters which are instrumented and controlled include the applied normal load, tangential load, and axial fatigue load. The fretting fatigue resistance of several other heat treated variants of Ti-6Al-4V are compared versus the two more common variants. Various stages of fretting fatigue crack growth are examined using a fracture mechanics approach. A multiaxial stress-based crack initiation criteria is developed and evaluated. The adhesion model of Giannakopoulos et al., is invoked to determine a contact fatigue threshold of 2 MPa square root of m for Ti-6Al-4V and forms the basis of a life-prediction methodology. Finally, the usefulness of various surface treatments and dovetail designs as palliatives to counter fretting fatigue is discussed.

Book Synopsis Influence of Prior Heat and Creep on Fatigue in Structural Elements of DTD 5014 (RR58) Aluminium Alloy by : F. E. Kiddle
Download or read book Influence of Prior Heat and Creep on Fatigue in Structural Elements of DTD 5014 (RR58) Aluminium Alloy written by F. E. Kiddle and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of heat on fatigue have been studied by fatigue tests at ambient temperature on specimens first subjected to a single period of heating with and without steady load applied. The tests employed constant amplitude loading on various structural elements in DTD 5014 (RR58) aluminium alloy material. Heating was applied at temperatures in the range 100 deg C to 170 deg C for times ranging from 1h to 20000h. The initiation of fatigue cracks was significantly affected by heating, particularly at temperatures of 110 deg C and higher when the effects occurred comparatively rapidly. The two mechanisms of importance were changes in microstructure at the machined surface which encouraged initiation, and changes in residual stress by creep which encouraged or discouraged initiation according to the creep being compressive or tensile.
