This book was released on 2000 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L'OBJET DE CETTE THESE EST D'ETUDIER L'INFLUENCE D'ASPERITES PERIODIQUES D'UNE PAROI SUR L'ECOULEMENT D'UN FLUIDE VISQUEUX INCOMPRESSIBLE. LE FLUIDE OCCUPE UN DOMAINE INFINI HORIZONTAL LIMITE PAR UNE PAROI LISSE ET UNE PAROI RUGUEUSE. LE PROFIL DES ASPERITES EST REPRESENTE PAR UNE FONCTION OSCILLANTE, DEPENDANT D'UN PETIT PARAMETRE > 0. IL S'AGIT ALORS D'ETUDIER LE COMPORTEMENT ASYMPTOTIQUE DES CARACTERISTIQUES DU FLUIDE QUAND TEND VERS 0. LE MANUSCRIT COMPORTE QUATRE PARTIES. DANS LA PREMIERE PARTIE, ON SUPPOSE QUE L'ECOULEMENT EST REGI PAR LES EQUATIONS DE NAVIER-STOKES. ON DONNE DES ESTIMATIONS EN FONCTION DE DE L'ECART ENTRE LA VITESSE, LA PRESSION ET LA TRAINEE ET LEURS LIMITES. LA SECONDE PARTIE TRAITE DU COMPORTEMENT DES SOLUTIONS DE L'EQUATION DE LAPLACE MUNIE D'UNE CONDITION AUX LIMITES DE DIRICHLET OU DE FOURIER SUR LA FRONTIERE OSCILLANTE. DANS LA TROISIEME PARTIE, LE DOMAINE EST LIMITE INFERIEUREMENT PAR UNE PLAQUE LISSE ET SUPERIEUREMENT PAR UNE PLAQUE RUGUEUSE ET ON SUPPOSE QUE LE MOUVEMENT DU FLUIDE EST REGI PAR LES EQUATIONS DE STOKES. ON MONTRE ALORS QU'EN DEHORS DE LA REGION RUGUEUSE, L'ECOULEMENT SE COMPORTE ASYMPTOTIQUEMENT COMME UN ECOULEMENT DE COUETTE. EN UTILISANT UNE TECHNIQUE DE DECOMPOSITION PARTIELLE DE DOMAINE, ON DONNE ENSUITE UNE METHODE DE CALCUL EFFECTIF DES PARAMETRES DE L'ECOULEMENT. DANS LA DERNIERE PARTIE, ON CONSTRUIT UNE APPROXIMATION NON OSCILLANTE ET D'ORDRE UN DE LA SOLUTION DE L'EQUATION DE LAPLACE LORSQUE LE DOMAINE EST SUPPOSE LIMITE SUPERIEUREMENT PAR UNE PLAQUE RUGUEUSE ET INFERIEUREMENT PAR UNE PAROI LISSE.

Book excerpt: This new, third volume of Cohen-Tannoudji's groundbreaking textbook covers advanced topics of quantum mechanics such as uncorrelated and correlated identical particles, the quantum theory of the electromagnetic field, absorption, emission and scattering of photons by atoms, and quantum entanglement. Written in a didactically unrivalled manner, the textbook explains the fundamental concepts in seven chapters which are elaborated in accompanying complements that provide more detailed discussions, examples and applications. * Completing the success story: the third and final volume of the quantum mechanics textbook written by 1997 Nobel laureate Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and his colleagues Bernard Diu and Franck Laloë * As easily comprehensible as possible: all steps of the physical background and its mathematical representation are spelled out explicitly * Comprehensive: in addition to the fundamentals themselves, the books comes with a wealth of elaborately explained examples and applications Claude Cohen-Tannoudji was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris where he also studied and received his PhD in 1962. In 1973 he became Professor of atomic and molecular physics at the Collège des France. His main research interests were optical pumping, quantum optics and atom-photon interactions. In 1997, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, together with Steven Chu and William D. Phillips, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms. Bernard Diu was Professor at the Denis Diderot University (Paris VII). He was engaged in research at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics and High Energy where his focus was on strong interactions physics and statistical mechanics. Franck Laloë was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.

Book excerpt: Genmix: A General Computer Program for Two-dimensional Parabolic Phenomena explains a computer program called GENMIX. The main intention of the program is to be used as a tool of instructions. The name of the program is a mixture of two considerations: its generality and its concern for mixing processes. The book aims to help the potential user to understand the physical and mathematical basis of the topic computer program. It is also the aim of the book to make the program applicable to practical problems. The book is arranged in such a way as to parallel a course of lectures and associated computer-workshop sessions wherein the student is allowed to do some elementary computations as soon as he has gained some knowledge of the method. The book contains the mathematical, physical, and computer-coding aspects of the program. Concepts such as the boundary layer, two-dimensional, and steady- flow are defined and discussed in depth. The text will be a useful tool for computer instructors and students.

Book excerpt: This book is a revised and updated version, including a substantial portion of new material, of J. D. Cole's text Perturbation Methods in Applied Mathe matics, Ginn-Blaisdell, 1968. We present the material at a level which assumes some familiarity with the basics of ordinary and partial differential equations. Some of the more advanced ideas are reviewed as needed; therefore this book can serve as a text in either an advanced undergraduate course or a graduate level course on the subject. The applied mathematician, attempting to understand or solve a physical problem, very often uses a perturbation procedure. In doing this, he usually draws on a backlog of experience gained from the solution of similar examples rather than on some general theory of perturbations. The aim of this book is to survey these perturbation methods, especially in connection with differ ential equations, in order to illustrate certain general features common to many examples. The basic ideas, however, are also applicable to integral equations, integrodifferential equations, and even to_difference equations. In essence, a perturbation procedure consists of constructing the solution for a problem involving a small parameter B, either in the differential equation or the boundary conditions or both, when the solution for the limiting case B = 0 is known. The main mathematical tool used is asymptotic expansion with respect to a suitable asymptotic sequence of functions of B.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variational Methods in the Mechanics of Solids contains the proceedings of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Symposium on Variational Methods in the Mechanics of Solids, held at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, on September 11-13, 1978. The papers focus on advances in the application of variational methods to a variety of mathematically and technically significant problems in solid mechanics. The discussions are organized around three themes: thermomechanical behavior of composites, elastic and inelastic boundary value problems, and elastic and inelastic dynamic problems. This book is comprised of 58 chapters and opens by addressing some questions of asymptotic expansions connected with composite and with perforated materials. The following chapters explore mathematical and computational methods in plasticity; variational irreversible thermodynamics of open physical-chemical continua; macroscopic behavior of elastic material with periodically spaced rigid inclusions; and application of the Lanczos method to structural vibration. Finite deformation of elastic beams and complementary theorems of solid mechanics are also considered, along with numerical contact elastostatics; periodic solutions in plasticity and viscoplasticity; and the convergence of the mixed finite element method in linear elasticity. This monograph will appeal to practitioners of mathematicians as well as theoretical and applied mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of inclusion of local effects in the analysis of structures is currently one of prime importance for engineering design. The classical computational approaches are not readily adapted to take local effects into account and appropriate treatments are therefore necessary. Providing an introduction to and survey of the specific computational methods, this book contains 16 papers, most of which were presented at the EUROMECH Colloquium `Inclusion of Local Effects in the Analysis of Structures', held in France in 1984. The book begins with the various theories which allow the separation and determination of local and global effects. The next group of papers discuss edge effects for composite structures. The third part comprises two papers concerning dynamic problems and points the way towards non-conventional local effects in structural mechanics. The last part deals with general numerical methods, especially for effects due to large local variations of geometry.
