Book excerpt: Drawing together a multinational team of authors, this second edition of Structure and Performance of Cements highlights the latest global advances in the field of cement technology. Three broad categories are covered: basic materials and methods, cement extenders, and techniques of examination. Within these categories consideration has been given to environmental issues such as the use of waste materials in cement-burning as supplementary fuels and new and improved methods of instrumentation for examining structural aspects and performance of cements. This book also covers cement production, mineralogy and hydration, as well as the mechanical properties of cement, and the corrosion and durability of cementitious systems. Special cements are included, along with calcium aluminate and blended cements together with a consideration of the role of gypsum in cements. Structure and Performance of Cements is an invaluable key reference for academics, researchers and practitioners alike.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes New Mexico State University (NMSU) Civil Engineering developed Heat Treated (HT) ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). The primary goal of this study is to analyze the risk of delayed ettringite formation (DEF) through the analysis of temperature development in HT (aka heat curing), and risk of internal sulfate attack (ISA) and external sulfate attack (ESA) through the analysis of physical and chemical properties. Physical properties are tested using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) nitrogen adsorption, and mercury intrusion (MI). Chemical properties of the concrete mixture design and individual HT and untreated (UT) samples are done through mixture design analysis and comparison to known values. Results include that the heat of hydration in NMSU HT methods surpass the recommended curing temperature by roughly 15°C. XRD testing reveals that UT has 555 counts of ettringite higher than HT samples, pointing towards the thermal destabilization of ettringite and a raised risk of DEF. SEM hints at the UT sample being more hydrated throughout its paste with fewer pores and voids on the surface than the HT sample. BET testing reveals that the UT sample has a surface area of nearly 12 m2/g compared to 5 m2/g of the HT sample. MI testing reveals that the UT sample has a lower pore area, pore size, bulk and skeletal density, and porosity at the meso-macro pore level than the HT sample. MI and BET shows that micro-meso sized pores became finer while meso-macro sized pores became coarser in UHPC after HT. Chemical analysis of the design mixture shows that the UHPC mixture has a lower sulfate level then the maximum recommended, along with reduced tricalcium alumina, increased sulfate resistance through utilization of Type I/II cement, and the addition of 5% by mixture weight of silica fume and 3% by weight of fly ash, which aids in eliminating Ca(OH)2 reaction products in the hardened cement while increasing permeability and porosity of the concrete. In conclusion, NMSU developed UHPC is at little to no risk of ISA and at low to moderate risk of ETA depending on the planned utilization of the concrete.

Book excerpt: This open access book explores the strategic importance and advantages of adopting multidisciplinary and multiscalar approaches of inquiry and intervention with respect to the built environment, based on principles of sustainability and circular economy strategies. A series of key challenges are considered in depth from a multidisciplinary perspective, spanning engineering, architecture, and regional and urban economics. These challenges include strategies to relaunch socioeconomic development through regenerative processes, the regeneration of urban spaces from the perspective of resilience, the development and deployment of innovative products and processes in the construction sector in order to comply more fully with the principles of sustainability and circularity, and the development of multiscale approaches to enhance the performance of both the existing building stock and new buildings. The book offers a rich selection of conceptual, empirical, methodological, technical, and case study/project-based research. It will be of value for all who have an interest in regeneration of the built environment from a circular economy perspective.

It covers multicomponent systems, clinker phase structures and their reactions with water, hydrate composition and structure, as well as their physical properties. The mineral additions to cement are described as are their influence on cement-paste properties. Special cements are also discussed. The microstructure of concrete is then presented, and special emphasis is given to the role of the interfacial transition zone, and the corrosion processes in the light of cement-phase composition, mineral additions and w/c ratio. The admixtures' role in modern concrete technology is described with an emphasis on superplasticizer chemistry and its cement-paste rheological modification mechanism. Cement with atypical properties, such as calcium aluminate, white, low energy and expansive cements are characterized. The last part of the book is devoted to special types of concrete such as self compacting and to reactive powders.

Book excerpt: Deterioration of cement-based materials is a continuing problem, as it results in the substantial shortening of the lives of conventional concrete structures. The main costs result from poor performance and the need for early repair. With more advanced applications, where very long service lives are essential, such as the storage of nuclear waste, an understanding of the degradation processes in order to predict long term performance is very important. this book forms the proceedings of the latest Symposia at the Materials Research Society Autumn meeting in Boston.

Book excerpt: Concrete and cement-based materials must operate in increasingly aggressive aqueous environments, which may be either natural or industrial. These materials may suffer degradation in which ion addition and/or ion exchange reactions occur, leading to a breakdown of the matrix microstructure and consequent weakening. Sometimes this degradation can be extremely rapid and serious such as in acidic environments, while in other cases degradation occurs over long periods. Consequences of material failure are usually severe – adversely affecting the health and well-being of human communities and disturbing ecological balances. There are also large direct costs of maintaining and replacing deteriorated infrastructure and indirect costs from loss of production during maintenance work, which place a great burden on society. The focus of this book is on addressing issues concerning performance of cement-based materials in aggressive aqueous environments , by way of this State-of-the-Art Report. The book represents the work of many well-known and respected authors who contributed chapters or parts of chapters. Four main themes were addressed: I. Nature and kinetics of degradation and deterioration mechanisms of cement-based materials in aggressive aqueous environments, II. Modelling of deterioration in such environments, III. Test methods to assess performance of cement-based materials in such environments, and which can be used to characterise and rate relative performance and inform long term predictions, IV. Engineering implications and consequences of deterioration in aggressive aqueous environments, and engineering approaches to the problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently in Texas, there has been significant damage of field structures resulting from concrete durability problems. Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) and delayed ettringite formation (DEF), or combinations of the two, have been found to be the main causes of these problems. The term Premature Concrete Deterioration (PCD) has been adopted to refer to problems associated with ASR and DEF because it is often difficult to distinguish between them. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has designated nine mitigation options that are available to prevent or minimize PCD-related problems. Research is currently underway to document the performance of concrete using these mitigation options in the laboratory and in the field. One of the objectives of this research is to review the state of the art regarding ASR and DEF, with particular attention to mechanisms of damage, appropriate test methods, specifications, and performance-related issues.

Book excerpt: Concrete made using mineral cements, the raw materials which on earth are practically endless, is known as one of the oldest building materials and during the last decades of the twentieth century has become a dominant building material for general use. At the same time, the requirements of the quality of concrete and its performance properties, in particular compressive strength, durability, economical efficiency, and low negative impact of its manufacture on the environment have not yet been completely met. Bearing these requirements in mind, researchers and engineers worldwide are working on how to satisfy these requirements. This book has been written by researchers and experts in the field and provides the state of the art on recent progress achieved on the properties of concrete, including concrete in which industrial by-products are utilized. The book is dedicated to graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers in related fields.
