So agieren sie in einer pluralistischen und post-traditionalen Gesellschaft, in der sie mit unterschiedlichsten Moralvorstellungen und Ansprüchen konfrontiert sind. Diese Moralvorstellungen manifestieren sich unter anderem in Unternehmenswerten. Richten sich die Handlungen von Unternehmen dabei an Werten aus, welche nur ökonomische Interessen berücksichtigen, kann es zu gravierende Konflikten zwischen ihnen und ihren Anspruchsgruppen kommen. Die zunehmende Kritik am Shareholder-Value-Management oder die gesellschaftliche Empörung über zu hohe Bonuszahlungen an Manager sind genauso Ausdruck dieses Konfliktes, wie die steigenden Proteste gegen menschenunwürdige Arbeitsbedingungen, den rücksichtslose Abbau von natürlichen Ressourcen oder der Verschmutzung der Umwelt. Der sich daraus entwickelnde gesellschaftliche Druck, schafft für Unternehmen zumindest eine extrinsische Motivation, um den Ansprüchen eines ‚verantwortungsvolleren’ unternehmerischen Handelns nachzukommen. Orientieren sich Unternehmen in ihren Handlungen an eindimensionalen ökonomischen Werten, wie der Gewinnmaximierung, wirkt das ‚gesellschaftlich verantwortungsvolle Handeln’ eines Unternehmens jedoch eher aufgesetzt und wenig konsistent. So können Konzepte, welche die gesellschaftliche Unternehmensverantwortung (auch unter dem Begriff CSR: Corporate Social Responsibility bekannt) prinzipiell fördern sollen, als strategisches Marketinginstrument ‚missbraucht’ werden. Wird die Übernahme von gesellschaftlicher Verantwortung in Unternehmen dabei nur im Sinne der Verkaufsförderung bzw. Imageverbesserung verstanden, ohne dass die eigentlichen unternehmerischen Handlungen die Ansprüche anderer Stakeholder berücksichtigen, verlieren Unternehmen ihre Glaubwürdigkeit, das gesellschaftliche Vertrauen und letztlich ihre Existenzberechtigung. Damit der Verantwortung nachgekommen werden kann, müssen gesellschaftliche Ansprüche bereits in der Handlungsorientierung des Unternehmens, in den Unternehmenswerten, berücksichtigt werden. Um zu einem Konsens über eine gemeinsame und somit gerechte Wertebasis zwischen Unternehmen und Gesellschaft zu kommen, bedarf es einer Ebene, auf der die jeweiligen Moral- und Wertevorstellungen reflektiert werden können. Diese Reflexionsebene bildet die Ethik, welche in dieser Arbeit den Schwerpunkt darstellt.
