Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics of the International Monetary Systems follows the attempts to establish a form of control over international monetary systems from the Gold Standard system to the floating exchange rates of today. Since the inception of these systems, economists have criticized them as fundamentally unfair to countries that have not adopted the strict market rigors of Western-style capitalism. Samuel Sarri presents an ethical approach to evaluating the history of economic theory. Then he puts forth a new approach to international monetary systems that involves grouping similar countries and cultures in trading blocs called "regional competitive cooperatives" that fairly compete with one another, while boosting global development and respecting heterogeneous, regional value-systems and axiologies. He uses the successes of International Free Trade Agreements and the monetary union of Europe as a guide. Sarri's system aspires to achieve the classical ideals of global financial and monetary harmony. It takes into account the idea of multipolar power sharing, the economic outlooks, the diverse ethical views, the metaphysical and religious systems, histories, and cultures of the parts that compose the economic and political planetary whole.

Book Synopsis The Political Morality of the International Monetary Fund by : Robert John Myers

This book was released on with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions of international debt, world economic growth rates, and demands by the Third World nations for a "new international economic order" have thrust two relatively unknown international institutions, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, into public prominence. Controversy over the IMF--which helps debtor countries balance current accounts and meet debt payments--enters on the "conditions" that the lending institution places on receiving nations. Basically, debtor countries are required to put their economic house in order, usually by decreasing imports, increasing exports, and eliminating subsidies on food, gasoline, and other goods. Often, it is such subsidies that allow a government to maintain political support and control. Thus, meeting the requirements of the IMF can lead to domestic instability, as the riots in the Dominican Republic illustrated. Critics of the IMF often agree with the economic medicine but decry the side effects of the cure. Is enough attention being paid to the diversity of the debt-troubled nations? Is there a separate set of standards for the borrowers and the lenders in the IMF decision-making process? Is the IMF lending process fair? What are the often unintended effects of the IMF on foreign policy?

Book Synopsis Virtual Currencies and Beyond by : Mr.Dong He
Download or read book Virtual Currencies and Beyond written by Mr.Dong He and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New technologies are driving transformational changes in the global financial system. Virtual currencies (VCs) and the underlying distributed ledger systems are among these. VCs offer many potential benefits, but also considerable risks. VCs could raise efficiency and in the long run strengthen financial inclusion. At the same time, VCs could be potential vehicles for money laundering, terrorist financing, tax evasion and fraud. While risks to the conduct of monetary policy seem less likely to arise at this stage given the very small scale of VCs, risks to financial stability may eventually emerge as the new technologies become more widely used. National authorities have begun to address these challenges and will need to calibrate regulation in a manner that appropriately addresses the risks without stifling innovation. As experience is gained, international standards and best practices could be considered to provide guidance on the most appropriate regulatory responses in different fields, thereby promoting harmonization and cooperation across jurisdictions.

Book Synopsis What Money Can't Buy by : Michael J. Sandel
Download or read book What Money Can't Buy written by Michael J. Sandel and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should we pay children to read books or to get good grades? Should we allow corporations to pay for the right to pollute the atmosphere? Is it ethical to pay people to test risky new drugs or to donate their organs? What about hiring mercenaries to fight our wars? Auctioning admission to elite universities? Selling citizenship to immigrants willing to pay? In What Money Can't Buy, Michael J. Sandel takes on one of the biggest ethical questions of our time: Is there something wrong with a world in which everything is for sale? If so, how can we prevent market values from reaching into spheres of life where they don't belong? What are the moral limits of markets? In recent decades, market values have crowded out nonmarket norms in almost every aspect of life—medicine, education, government, law, art, sports, even family life and personal relations. Without quite realizing it, Sandel argues, we have drifted from having a market economy to being a market society. Is this where we want to be?In his New York Times bestseller Justice, Sandel showed himself to be a master at illuminating, with clarity and verve, the hard moral questions we confront in our everyday lives. Now, in What Money Can't Buy, he provokes an essential discussion that we, in our market-driven age, need to have: What is the proper role of markets in a democratic society—and how can we protect the moral and civic goods that markets don't honor and that money can't buy?

Book Synopsis How Adam Smith Can Change Your Life by : Russ Roberts
Download or read book How Adam Smith Can Change Your Life written by Russ Roberts and published by Portfolio. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How the insights of an 18th century economist can help us live better in the 21st century. Adam Smith became famous for The Wealth of Nations, but the Scottish economist also cared deeply about our moral choices and behavior--the subjects of his other brilliant book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759). Now, economist Russ Roberts shows why Smith's neglected work might be the greatest self-help book you've never read. Roberts explores Smith's unique and fascinating approach to fundamental questions such as: - What is the deepest source of human satisfaction? - Why do we sometimes swing between selfishness and altruism? - What's the connection between morality and happiness? Drawing on current events, literature, history, and pop culture, Roberts offers an accessible and thought-provoking view of human behavior through the lenses of behavioral economics and philosophy"--
