Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics of Literature If men were so concerned to have as they are disposed to affect wisdom, it would not be so rare; and the flood of learned jargon with which the world is deluged would not be so over whelming. The results Of their misguided energies, while less voluminous, might be more edifying to their readers, and possi bly more gratifying to the ambitious writers. At all events the world would not suffer from an abatement Of the prevalent ardor for authorship. My library, selected from time to time, and with aview to literary utility, contains many eubullitions, instances Of the inability of the wise to suppress the divine af atus. From the times of the Socratic Phaedo and the Eucli dian Phoenix on down through the cycles to those Of the Anal ogy and the Age of Reason, and to the present, there have been few wilful violations Of the edict against concealing light under a bushel. In view of the universally inherent communicative ness Of the learned the admonition were quite superfluous; they seldom deserve censure for knowing more than they are willing to impart to or inflict upon their fellows. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Literature and Ethics The following pages consist of selections from the literary remains of the late Rev. William Anderson o'conor, and are fairly representative of his intellectual powers Whilst not exhaustive of the material placed at the disposal of the editor. Should the present volume be received With favour, there are sufficient uncollected papers to form a second series. The volume owes its inception to the desire on the part of the members of the Manchester Literary Club and other ad miters of Mr. O'conor to have some permanent memorial of his powers as a critic. Most of the essays now republished were in the first instance read before the Club. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethical Teachings in Old English Literature The special object of this treatise on Old English books and authors is an ethical one rather than linguistic or critical. Technical and minute discussion is purposely made subordinate to as brief and popular a presentation of the theme as the subject-matter will allow. The more thoroughly these earlier writers are studied, the more apparent it will be that a truly devout and religious temper pervades them. It is hoped that the interpretation of this spirit, as it is revealed in these pre-Elizabethan and pre-Reformation English poets and prose writers, may prove of essential service to all English literary students and, most especially, to those engaged in clerical and homiletic studies. The author can desire nothing more as to these papers, than that the pleasure and profit of their reading may be even approximately equal to that of their preparation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Ethics Each individual weaves his own life fabric, yet the texture, coloring, and design are largely influenced by the thoughts, helpful deeds, and words of good cheer extended him. So it is with this volume. It is mine, and yet not mine, for the best of it belongs directly or indirectly to others. Indeed, I have been shown so much kindness and consideration by authors, publish ers, and editors, that I have been surprised and pleased by their universal courtesy and help fulness. I have thought it desirable to add a good deal of new material on the development of the moral life and of the moral judgment. It may be held that these sub jests belong more properly to Sociology and Psychology than to Ethics in the stricter sense; but I have found that their absence is a more serious defect than their presence. I have also added, at the beginning of Book II., a short historical account of the leading points of view in ethical. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical Introduction to Ethics The criticism of moral systems constitutes a special section. In this way the repetition of objections which hold against a number of systems has been avoided. In the classroom, how ever, the author has departed from this plan. Students require and often request some kind of criticism before the lecturer passes from one system to another. The best plan in actual practice is to indicate the chief lines of criticism in concluding the analysis of an author, and toward the end of the course to summarize the various systems, giving a general and special criticism of the theories of morality. The collection of the points of criticism into one division, while having special advan tages in a printed work, need not interfere with the carrying out of the above method in practice, for it is a very easy matter to turn from one part of a book to another. In the choice of the types of ethical theory scarcely any two men would agree, and the author can scarcely hope to escape the accusation of most serious omissions. Some of these omissions will, however, be pardoned by one who bears in mind that the present work does not pretend to be a history of ethics, that the number of types must be relatively few, lest the student be lost in a maze of detail, and that the author can only hope to introduce the student to the field of ethical speculation.
