Despite this, the new alliance between Raven’s Realm and the Eastern Kingdom seems to be off to a promising start. Unfortunately, there are those working from within to tear it all down. The seemingly sudden disappearance of the demon removes the common threat and encourages others to make their move. Meanwhile, Qian and K’tar must complete their mission to learn the terrible truth about the dark influence spreading throughout their world. The more difficult task will be getting anyone to listen. Along the way, they meet a strange survivor of an unknown tragedy who displays both amazing abilities and abject terror of the world around her. Gabriella wakes up after being cast down as a mortal with no knowledge of the world around her, or even her own body. The former Angel of Voice has been rendered mute. As her thoughts settle, she understands everything about the truth of the world she had always been watching, but what difference does it make? In the second installment of the Wolves and Ravens trilogy, Wolves and Ravens Book 2: Choice, victory is still defeat—final battles are only the beginning.

Book excerpt: The Great War Has Ended… The thousand years following the Great War, and the writing of the First Law, were not always peaceful, but nothing could compare to the slaughter that came before. The three races continued to make their way through the world in relative prosperity, even after the separation of the Eastern Kingdom over five hundred years prior. The horrors of the Great War faded into the annals of history, except for a single problem. It was all a lie. Distrust of the ravens was beginning to spread from an unknown source. The disappearances were growing more frequent and were joined by even darker rumors. Through all this, the Raven Queens continued to research the truth for centuries. How do you prove a lie with no evidence? How do you find evidence from a thousand years ago? What really happened? How did the Great War truly end? Queen Nánfeng knows she will not live to see the answers but knows they are running out of time. All she can do is prepare the way for her child-prodigy of a daughter. A seven-year-old Princess who cares more about complaining and hiding from her training than she does about the state of the world. It will be up to Princess Qiàn’s Wolf Protector to keep her on the proper path. The true road to being the Raven Queen is a brutal one which no one would ever want to force on another. However, through the suffering and sacrifice of one, perhaps all others will be spared. Unbeknownst to all, even the Raven Queens, their world has been being watched closely for a very long time, from both sides.

Book excerpt: “The most credible and frightening of all the vampire books of the past decade.” —San Francisco Chronicle “Bram Stoker meets Stephen King meets Michael Crichton. It just doesn’t get much better than this.” —Nelson DeMille The stunning New York Times bestselling vampire saga that author Dan Simmons (Drood, The Terror) calls, “an unholy spawn of I Am Legend out of ‘Salem’s Lot,” concludes with The Night Eternal. The magnificent, if monstrously warped brainchild of cinematic horror master Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) and Chuck Hogan—whose novel Prince of Thieves, was praised as, “one of the 10 best books of the year” by Stephen King—The Night Eternal begins where The Strain and The Fall left off: with the last remnants of humankind enslaved by the vampire masters in a world forever shrouded by nuclear winter. Still, a small band of the living fights on in the shadows, in the final book of the ingenious dark fantasy trilogy that Newsweek says is, “good enough to make us break that vow to swear off vampire stories.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together fifteen articles by scholars in Europe and North America, this collection aims to represent and advance studies in historical lexis. It highlights the significance of the understanding of dictionary-making and language-making as important socio-cultural phenomena. With its general focus on England and English, the book investigates the reception and development of historical and modern English vocabulary and culture in different periods, social and professional strata, geographical varieties of English, and other national cultures. The volume is based on individual (meta)lexicographical, etymological, lexicosemantic and corpus studies, representing two large areas of research: the first part focuses on the history of dictionaries, analysing them in diachrony from the first professional dictionaries of the Baroque period via Enlightenment and Romanticism to exploring the possibilities of the new online lexicographical publications; and the second part looks at the interfaces between etymology, semantic development and word-formation on the one hand, and changes in society and culture on the other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genial Perception offers a critical examination of Wordsworth’s and Coleridge’s naturalist construction of creative and critical perception, and a historical study of the perceptual dimension of poetic taste. “Genial” is the adjectival form of “genius,” and eighteenth-century critical naturalism understands “genial” perception as a gift of nature, as an inborn power operating autonomously through the senses and imagination and thus independently of cultural influence. By exploring the philology of keywords and binaries inherited by the two poet-critics and used to describe and interpret their perceptual experience, both creative (imaginative) and critical, Genial Perception traces how that experience reveals an unacknowledged indebtedness to discourse and language, having been silently and perhaps unconsciously shaped by patterns and trends in the literary culture in which Wordsworth and Coleridge came of age. This study shows that critical perception, often thought to be too elusive and subjective to make a proper subject for historical investigation, can be approached through study of the terms—the language—of the practical criticism that attempts to communicate it; that both critical and creative perception are far more dependent on language than is commonly recognized; and that philology, by recovering the original usage, functions, and contexts of critical keywords, provides for an accurate historical understanding of the claims made by critics in the long eighteenth century for “genial” perception, and can illuminate the dynamics of “genial” perception itself.
