Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aleksander Fiut's study of the poetry of Nobel Laureate Czeslaw Milosz is the first comprehensive examination of the artistic and philosophical dimensions of this remarkable oeuvre. The author refutes such easy categorizations of Milosz as "the poet of Poland," "the poet of history," "the poet of the Holocaust." He examines instead such crucial problems as Milosz's search for the essence of human nature, irreducible to historical, social, and biological categories; Milosz's reflection on the erosion of the Christian imagination, which has resulted in a fundamental gap between the individual's inner life and the image of humanity formed by scientific theories; his efforts to rebuild the anthropocentric vision of the world, while acknowledging the elements that have undermined it; and finally, his attempt to recreate in his poetry a language that is both poetic and philosophical. The Eternal Moment originally appeared in Polish in 1987. This version, which quotes extensively from Milosz's Collected Poems, is the first thorough introduction for English-speaking readers to this major poet. Book excerpt: This collection of supernatural, fantasy, and sci-fi stories from the Nobel Prize–nominated author “presents a new side of a distinguished writer” (The New York Times). Novelist, essayist, and acclaimed author of A Room with a View and A Passage to India, E. M. Written between 1903 and 1914, notable works included are the dystopian “The Machine Stops” as well as “The Point of It,” “Mr. Andrews,” “Coordination,” and “The Story of the Siren.” All are profound and prescient narratives revealing a futuristic world that will look remarkably and eerily familiar to modern readers. “E. M. Forster is for me the only living novelist who can be read again and again and who, after each reading, gives me what few writers can give us after our first days of novel-reading, the sensation of having learned something.” —Lionel Trilling
Book Synopsis The Eternal Moment by : DEMETRIO VERBARO
Download or read book The Eternal Moment written by DEMETRIO VERBARO and published by Babelcube Inc.. This book was released on 2018-10-28 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a good read that flows well and makes you dream. I believe that Demetrio’s goal is to take the readers to when they were teenagers, their first friendships, their first loves. And then persuade them to dream with open eyes. The eternal moment is an intense story about love and friendship. The protagonists are three children: Giuseppe, Jessica and Sidney. Each of them, in its own way, is special, unusual, but it is because of this diversity that they will be marginalized by their peers. They, however, will find in their friendship a unique and indissoluble bond. The novel is structured in two temporal and geographical levels: odd chapters, in the history, tell the story of the three main characters, starting from their childhood in 1992, and following them up to their twenties. The setting is Mosorrofa a small town of Reggio Calabria perched on a hill. In the even chapters, on the other hand, we are in 2013 and we find the characters already in their thirties, intent to face the complications of love. The setting is New York. For those who like happy endings I recommend stopping at the final chapter. For all others, I advise to continue reading until the epilogue.

Book Synopsis The Coming of God by : Jürgen Moltmann
Download or read book The Coming of God written by Jürgen Moltmann and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2004-07-27 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of Grawemeyer Award In this remarkable and timely work - in many ways the culmination of his systematic theology - world-renowned theologian Jurgen Moltmann stands Christian eschatology on its head. Moltmann rejects the traditional approach, which focuses on the End, an apocalyptic finale, as a kind of Christian search for the "final solution." He centers instead on hope and God's promise of new creation for all things. "Christian eschatology," he says, "is the remembered hope of the raising of the crucified Christ, so it talks about beginning afresh in the deadly end." Yet Moltmann's novel framework, deeply informed by Jewish and messianic thought, also fosters rich and creative insights into the perennially nettling questions of eschatology: Are there eternal life and personal identity after death? How is one to think of heaven, hell, and purgatory? What are the historical and cosmological dimensions of Christian hope? What are its social and political implications. In a heartbreakingly fragile and fragment world, Moltmann's comprehensive eschatology surveys the Christian vista, bravely envisioning our "horizons of expectation" for personal, social, even cosmic transformation in God.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER #1 bestselling author Lisa Scottoline offers a sweeping and shattering epic of historical fiction fueled by shocking true events, the tale of a love triangle that unfolds in the heart of Rome...in the creeping shadow of fascism. What war destroys, only love can heal. Elisabetta, Marco, and Sandro grow up as the best of friends despite their differences. Elisabetta is a feisty beauty who dreams of becoming a novelist; Marco the brash and athletic son in a family of professional cyclists; and Sandro a Jewish mathematics prodigy, kind-hearted and thoughtful, the son of a lawyer and a doctor. Their friendship blossoms to love, with both Sandro and Marco hoping to win Elisabetta's heart. But in the autumn of 1937, all of that begins to change as Mussolini asserts his power, aligning Italy's Fascists with Hitler's Nazis and altering the very laws that govern Rome. In time, everything that the three hold dear--their families, their homes, and their connection to one another--is tested in ways they never could have imagined. As anti-Semitism takes legal root and World War II erupts, the threesome realizes that Mussolini was only the beginning. The Nazis invade Rome, and with their occupation come new atrocities against the city's Jews, culminating in a final, horrific betrayal. Against this backdrop, the intertwined fates of Elisabetta, Marco, Sandro, and their families will be decided, in a heartbreaking story of both the best and the worst that the world has to offer. Unfolding over decades, Eternal is a tale of loyalty and loss, family and food, love and war--all set in one of the world's most beautiful cities at its darkest moment. This moving novel will be forever etched in the hearts and minds of readers.

Download or read book I Am A I written by Steven Joshua and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I AM A I, Unfolding the Flower As long as you 'walk this planet', you are going to be working with or applying the laws/truths of a physical science textbook. You will work with or apply gravity and the laws of motion in order to walk. You will work with or apply the laws/truths of thermodynamics to keep warm. You will work with or apply the laws of harmonics to speak. And...you may be totally unaware that you are applying these laws/truths as you move through physical form even though they have the potential of being everywhere and are "within you and without you" . Sound familiar? What can be said for physical laws applies to the spiritual laws/truths of Heaven as well. I AM A I, Unfolding the Flower provides you with a comprehensive model that synthesizes the physical sciences with the metaphysical sciences while incorporating the core concepts of most world religions. In addition, it provides you a set of very basic relatively generic tools, that when applied, can enhance your life experience, spiritual and non-spiritual. Some of the tools presented in this book are: O Truth perception and recognition exercises O A multitude of meditation forms are presented to you O Mechanics of your mind and exercises on how to use them O The mechanics of visualization exercises and exercises that extend your 'mind's eye' through time and space O Some elementary ESP exercises O Numerous exercise modalities for you to use music as a mental tool It is the operator's intention that determines the use of a tool. Just as it is the applications of the laws/truths inside a physical science book, that produces physical effects in your life. It is the applications of the laws/truths inside I AM A I that will produce spiritual or mystical effects in your life. And...a principle stated in this book -- the 'higher' determines the 'lower' - maintains that the spiritual or mystical results can have physical side effects.
