Book excerpt: THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Anne Bishop returns to her world of the Others, as humans struggle to survive in the shadow of shapeshifters and vampires far more powerful than themselves... After a human uprising was brutally put down by the Elders—a primitive and lethal form of the Others—the few cities left under human control are far-flung. And the people within them now know to fear the no-man’s-land beyond their borders—and the darkness... As some communities struggle to rebuild, Lakeside Courtyard has emerged relatively unscathed, though Simon Wolfgard, its wolf shifter leader, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn must work with the human pack to maintain the fragile peace. But all their efforts are threatened when Lieutenant Montgomery’s shady brother arrives, looking for a free ride and easy pickings. With the humans on guard against one of their own, tensions rise, drawing the attention of the Elders, who are curious about the effect such an insignificant predator can have on a pack. But Meg knows the dangers, for she has seen in the cards how it will all end—with her standing beside a grave...

Book excerpt: Kate Brewster's quest to become the first woman to run a Wall Street institution is about to come to fruition. Wooed away from a top job at a competing firm by Ed Roth with promises of breaking the glass ceiling when she succeeds him as the head of the investment bank Drake Carlson, Kate learns that she has real potential for the top spot. First, she must prove her worth by unconventionally putting together an IPO for a small games maker whose most valuable but unknown asset may be a painting stolen from a Jewish family as they fled Austria after the Nazi invasion. Kate's professional challenges play out amid a family crisis: her husband's company is imploding and he may have to relocate to a remote part of China to save even a small portion of his business. Her integrity is challenged when she's accused of slowing down a deal to sell her husband's company to divert the sizeable sales commission to Drake, her new company. As a result, Kate uncovers an illegal trading scheme involving her partners, and their downfall triggers another firm's attempt at a hostile takeover of Drake. Against seemingly impossible odds, Kate is able to strike a balance between the demands of the deal she is running and the right of a patriarch's family to seek closure for wounds that date back generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I smiled when I thought about him lyin' alone in that field with his bones picked clean. Live free or die... I finally understood." The year is 1872. The Civil War has ended, leaving behind a nation torn and economically depressed. "Etched in Granite" is a harrowing account of life and death on a rural New England Poor Farm - a tragic, yet triumphant novel that tells a story of courage, survival, and secrets surrounding lost love. The story is narrated by the three principal characters: Abigail, a young woman facing unimaginable hardship when agonizing circumstances and betrayal lead to life on the Poor Farm; Nellie, an Abenaki elder and healer enduring great loss while exhibiting resilience during a time of social, racial, and religious intolerance; and Silas, a spirited farm boss illuminating the conflicts of balancing a position of authority with his personal life while navigating small town politics. Their unforgettable stories are carefully woven together to reveal a hidden part of America's somber past. The novel was inspired by the author's discovery of a pauper cemetery in New Hampshire where there are 298 numbered graves. It is her mission to give voices to those silenced, to evoke images where they have been erased, and to replace the numbers with names.ETCHED IN GRANITE Historical Fiction Series BOOK ONE

Book Synopsis Miraculous Images and Votive Offerings in Mexico by : Frank Graziano
Download or read book Miraculous Images and Votive Offerings in Mexico written by Frank Graziano and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexican statues and paintings like the Virgen de Guadalupe and the Se or de Chalma are endowed with sacred presence and the power to perform miracles. Millions of devotees visit their shrines to request miracles for health, employment, children, and countless everyday matters. When miracles are granted, devotees reciprocate with votive offerings. Collages, photographs, documents, texts, milagritos, hair and braids, clothing, retablos, and various representative objects cover walls at many shrines. Miraculous Images and Votive Offerings in Mexico explores such petitionary devotion in depth through extensive fieldwork supported by research in a vast body of interdisciplinary scholarship. The study's principal themes include sacred power and human agency, reification, projective animation, faith as a cognitive filter, sacred power transfer, social and narrative construction, positive framing, collaborative and deferred control, vows (juramentos), and miracle attribution. The book is written in two alternating voices, one interpretive to provide an understanding of miracles, miraculous images, and votive offerings, and the other narrative to illustrate the interpretive chapters and to bring the reader closer to experiences at the shrines. Among the many miraculous images treated in the book are the Cristo Negro de Otatitl n, Ni o del Cacahuatito, Se or de Chalma, Se or de la Misericordia (Tepatitl n), Se or del Rayo, Se or de las Tres Ca das (Teotilalpam), Virgen de los Dolores de Soriano, Virgen de Guadalupe, Virgen del Pueblito, Virgen de Juquila, Virgen de los Remedios, Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos, Virgen de Talpa, Virgen de Tonatico, and Virgen de Zapopan.
