Book excerpt: "Desarrollar las competencias del profesor es una de las estrategias fundamentales para mejorar la calidad de la educación superior (Bernal & Ibarrola, 2014). Sin embargo, no está claro sobre qué base se debe buscar el desarrollo profesional docente (DPD), no hay consenso general sobre cuál debe ser el foco de atención y no se le hace justicia a su importancia. Con esta investigación cualitativa en diseño de estudio de caso múltiple se logró dilucidar el significado del DPD, su incidencia en los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje y las mejores prácticas didácticas para favorecerlo. Las preguntas que guiaron el estudio fueron: ¿Cómo los profesores universitarios describen y analizan el proceso de desarrollo de sus competencias didácticas y profesionales? ¿Cómo los profesores universitarios creen que debería ser el proceso de desarrollo de las competencias didácticas y profesionales? ¿Qué prácticas utilizan predominantemente los profesores y cómo inciden en el ejercicio de su gestión pedagógica? ¿Cuáles han sido las experiencias de formación en pedagogía universitaria que han facilitado su desempeño como profesores y cómo han sido esas experiencias? ¿Cuán pertinentes y accesibles han sido los procesos de evaluación y desarrollo profesional que se ofrecen en la institución bajo estudio para transformar el aprendizaje de los estudiantes? ¿Qué expectativa tienen los profesores sobre el propósito, uso y los beneficios de la evaluación post permanencia (EPP)? Se encontró pobre entendimiento con relación al significado del DPD, baja participación en las ofertas de desarrollo profesional e inexistencia de un sistema institucional sustentable con el cual se asegure la calidad de la educación superior. Pudo constatarse que en los procesos de reclutamiento y selección de profesores no se consideran requisitos mínimos en formación pedagógica y que los profesores no consideran indispensable que se tenga una formación inicial en educación, didáctica y pedagogía, para comenzar a ejercer la función. Se explica cómo el posicionamiento y la reculturalización harán que se genere compromiso con el DPD, para dar paso a que los profesores conduzcan sus prácticas fundamentados en una cultura de documentación que vincule su desarrollo profesional con el aprendizaje de los estudiantes. Se recomienda que la organización educativa desarrolle, implante y controle un programa institucionalizado de DPD que permita tratar la práctica pedagógica de forma clínica. Se recomiendan otros estudios para ampliar el contexto"--pages vi-vii.
