Book excerpt: Since the end of the Cold War there has been an increased interest in the Baltics. The Baltic States brings together three titles, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, to provide a comprehensive and analytical guide integrating history, political science, economic development and contemporary events into one account. Since gaining their independence, each country has developed at its own pace with its own agenda and facing its own obstacles. The authors examine the tensions accompanying a post-communist return to Europe after the long years of separation and how each country has responded to the demands of becoming a modern European state. Estonia was the first of the former Soviet republics to enter membership negotiations with the European Union in 1988 and is a potential candidate for the next round of EU expansion in 2004. Lithuania and Latvia have also expressed their desire for future membership of NATO and the EU.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book, entitled Collected Papers: Financial Regulation in Estonia, Poland and Latvia within the Context of European Union Membership, brings together five papers that the author wrote during the course of his career. The first and the last are short articles on general topics - with the former being written approximately ten years earlier than the latter. Both are constructed around defining events - the first the enactment of the Lisbon Treaty, which can be seen with the benefit of hindsight as a time of unity and promise within the European Union, and the other the process of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union - a time at which both the unity and the promise have withered. The second and the third are substantive items - the former examining the extent to which laws of the then-new Member States of the European Union Estonia, Poland and Latvia comply with that Union's free movement of capital rules, and the latter reporting the results of a survey of company executives within those three countries on their views as to the degree to which their businesses are affected by national limitations on the free movement of capital. The fourth paper investigates the extent to which accession to the European Union has affected regulation of the retail banking sector in those three states"--
Book Synopsis Presidential Activism and Veto Power in Central and Eastern Europe by : Philipp Köker
Download or read book Presidential Activism and Veto Power in Central and Eastern Europe written by Philipp Köker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the use of presidential powers in Central and East Europe between 1990 and 2010. Focussing on presidential vetoes and the formation of governments, it maps patterns of presidential activism and its determinants across nine democracies. Thereby, it combines the analysis of original quantitative data on the use of presidential powers with in-depth case studies in an innovative mixed-methods framework. Based on regression analyses and unique insights from numerous elite interviews, the study shows strong support for the hitherto insufficiently tested assumption that popularly elected presidents are more active than their indirectly elected counterparts. As one of the first comprehensive comparative studies of presidential activism and veto power in Europe, this book will be a key resource not only for area specialists but also for scholars of presidential studies, comparative government, and executives.
