Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study was initiated in response to concerns regarding apparent declines in abundance and breeding pair density of tundra swans on and adjacent to Izembek National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) on the lower Alaska Peninsula. I conducted an analysis of long-term data (1978-1996) to estimate demographic parameters and assess the relationship between survival probabilities and a number of environmental and ecological factors. Rates of productivity (egg, nest, cygnet survival) and annual rates of apparent adult survival were lower and more variable than previously observed for other swan populations and species. A negative relationship between nesting success and brown bear density indicates that depredation by bears is a primary determinant of tundra swan reproductive success. Changes in apparent survival probability were primarily influenced by high and variable rates of permanent emigration. Because of low rates of production and apparent survival, immigration by swans from other breeding areas may be important for sustaining a breeding population of tundra swans on and adjacent to Izembek NWR"--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: The involvement of humans with ducks, geese and swans has probably been closer than with any other group of birds, today and for several millenia past. This involvement, in its many aspects, is the theme of this compelling and readable account by an Assistant Director of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. Dr Kear ranges widely, from a summary of the taxonomy and natural history of wildfowl, through a history of domestication world wide, to wildfowling, decoys, conservation and captive breeding, conflicts with agriculture, and wildfowl in legend and literature. Throughout, the text abounds with little-known facts and insights to intrigue the general reader and expert alike - a reflection of the author's wide reading and affection for her subject. Book excerpt: Harvest of Fish and Wildlife: New Paradigms for Sustainable Management unites experts in wildlife and fishery sciences for an interdisciplinary overview of harvest management. This book presents unique insights for embracing the complete social-ecological system to ensure a sustainable future. It educates users on evolutionary and population dynamics; social and political influences; hunter and angler behavior; decision processes; impacts of regulations; and stakeholder involvement. Features: Written by twenty-four teams of leading scientists and managers. Promotes transparent justification for fishing and hunting regulations. Provides examples for integrating decision making into management. Emphasizes creativity in management by integrating art and science. This book appeals to population biologists, evolutionary biologists and social scientists. It is a key resource for on-the-ground managers and research scientists developing harvesting applications. As the book’s contributors explain: “Making decisions that are robust to uncertainty...is a paradigm shift with a lot of potential to improve outcomes for fish and wildlife populations.” –Andrew Tyre and Brigitte Tenhumberg “Temporal shifts in system states...must somehow be anticipated and dealt with to derive harvest policies that remain optimal in the long term.” –Michael Conroy “Proactive, effective management of sportspersons...will be essential in the new paradigm of harvest management.” –Matthew Gruntorad and Christopher Chizinski
