Water quality of the Harbour has been improved in past 20 years but the phytoplankton density is still high compared to other waters in Hong Kong. This study aimed to quantify submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) to Tolo Harbour and to show the important role of SGD in terms of nutrient loading with ecological effect. SGD was determined by one of the natural geochemical tracers, 226Ra. Mass balance of 226Ra was applied to quantify SGD and SGD was estimated to be 8.28 106 m3 d-1. A large portion of the SGD was recirculated seawater while the freshwater component of SGD, or submarine fresh groundwater discharge (SFGD), was only a small portion of that. SFGD was estimated to be 2.31 105 m3 d-1 using water balance. The flushing time of Tolo Harbour was estimated to be 77.9 d by using SFGD as one of the fresh water input components. Different nutrients including NH3-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, PO43--P, SiO2-Si and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were applied to nutrient mass balance analyses. The mass balance is based on non-point sources which include aerosol deposition (dry deposition), rainfall (wet deposition), diffusion from sediment, river, SGD and tidal exchange. Removal of nutrients was determined once all the non-point sources were estimated. SGD is the major source which contributes more than 88 % for different nutrients. Other sources contribute less than 10 % individually. The total nutrient loads of DIN, PO43--P and SiO2-Si are 8.33 105, 1.03 104 and 1.28 106 mol d-1 respectively. The removals of DIN, PO43--P and SiO2-Si are 6.87 105, 5.10 103 and 1.28 106 mol d-1 respectively. Assume the removal of nutrients was only due to consumption of phytoplankton, primary productivity was estimated to be 1.16g C m-2 d-1. Limitations of this study were about the determination of atmospheric depositions and diffusion from sediment. However, the contribution of nutrient loading from these sources was insignificant compared with SGD. Even if SGD is replaced by SFGD for the nutrient loading estimation, it is still the major contributor among all other non-point sources. In spite of the limitations, the important role of SGD in terms of nutrient loading is evident. Groundwater quality should be monitored and controlled as it has significant ecological impact to the Harbour. Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled ESTIMATION OF SUBMARINE GROUNDWATER DISCHARGE INTO TOLO HARBOUR Submitted by KIU CHUNG TSE for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2006 The ecological impact of algal blooms in Tolo Harbour has received much attention. Nutrients such as N, P and Si are consented to be the limiting factors for algal blooms. This study aims to quantify the submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) flux discharging to Tolo Harbour and ultimately, to assess the ecological consequence of nutrient input through this underground route. SGD is assessed by radium isotopes and radon in this study. In 2005, seawater samples were collected for radium isotopic analysis in March and October, while a site in Plover Cove was selected for radon analysis in July 222 during the neap tide and spring tide periods. Temporal distributions of Rn 224 and Ra show an inverse relationship with the tidal height, which are 224 believed to reflect the tidal effects on SGD. Spatial distribution of Ra shows a prominent decreasing trend with distance offshore except for a site in Sha Tin Hoi, where SGD as the form of submarine groundwater spring is 224 suspected to exist at the bifurcation of two faults. Enrichment of Ra nearshore was speculated to be attributed to rivers and SGD. Based on the 224 Ra data, the residence time of radium in Tolo Harbour was estimated to be 46 days. Direct measurement by seepage meter in Plover Cove gives an average value of 0.08 m/day, which is very consistent with the SGD flux estimated by 222 Rn with SGD fluid represented by groundwater sample from Chim Uk private well (0.06 m/day). For a seepage area of 200 m x 3000 m in Plover 4 3 Cove, the volumetric SGD would be 3.6-4.8 x 10 m /day. In the Ra isotopes 4 3 approach, the volumetric SGD were estimated to be 6.87 x 10 m /day for 5 3 March and 1.53 x 10 m /day for October. Approximate estimate from water balance calculation places the value of terrestrial groundwater discharge to be 4 3 3.56 x 10 m /day. Nutrients in groundwater around Tolo Harbour were measured. Estimates of nutrient loading through the pathway of SGD ranged from 0 to 29.1 kg/day for nitrite, 32 to 2326 kg/day for nitrate and 0 to 71.9 kg/day for phosphate. 226 228 Limitations of this study mainly come from Ra and Ra data in which standards were not available for calibration. In radon analysis, there are two 222 abnormal Rn values which remain unexplainable. Also, the technique to install the seepage meter is still subject to improve. On the other hand, groundwater data are too sparse to represent the SGD fluid reasonably. Despite of the limitations, nutrient loading on Tolo Harbour through the pathway of SGD is doubtless significant. Unfortunately groundwater quality has been overlooked by the government in the management of red tides in Hong Kong. Based on the result from this study, the current practice for the management of red tides in Hong Kong has to be reviewed and the control measures of groundwater contamination are obviously required. Book excerpt: The book provides a review of experimental methods and presents the worldwide newest literature regarding chemical substances fluxes via submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). Thus, the book characterizes both the distribution of chemicals in groundwater impacted areas in the Baltic Sea and their fluxes via SGD to the Baltic Sea. This book presents the state of art regarding the SGD and detailed studies on SGD characterization in the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea is an example of a region highly influenced by a variety of human activities that affect the ecosystem. It is shown that SGD has been proven to be one of the important sources introducing dissolved substances into the Baltic Sea. The loads of chemical substances delivered to the Baltic sea with SGD have not been quantified so far.

Book excerpt: It has been recognized that submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) may be one of the principal pathways for delivering nutrients to surface water bodies, resulting in eutrophication of many nearshore coastal areas throughout the world. A one-year study of the coastal aquifer system (A1, A2, A3-Aquifers) of Gulf Shores, Alabama was conducted to assess SGD fluxes, characterize contaminant and nutrient transport through the aquifer system, and determine the availability of future aquifer resources. A three-dimensional density-dependent groundwater flow and transport model (SEAWAT), based on the coupling of MOFLOW and MT3DMS, was used to simulate the transport of nitrate and sulfate through the groundwater system to the coast. The model was refined and calibrated using independently determined field-based radon (222Rn, t1/2=3.82 d) isotopic tracer time-series surveys across a portion of the model area to enhance estimates of nearshore SGD. Two SGD approaches, integrated with 222Rn-determined seepage rates, were developed to determine (1) localized; and (2) entire-shoreline SGD. Thirty-two groundwater wells within the study area were sampled to constrain the groundwater 222Rn end-member in the model and characterize the extent of nutrient contamination. The ArcGIS database was used to spatially plot and interpret nutrient and 222Rn data, and generate iso-concentration maps detailing groundwater contamination and aquifer piezometric surfaces across the study area. Radon concentrations measured in groundwater from the shallow A1 and deeper A2 Aquifers were statistically identical, an indication that there is direct connection between the two systems. Elevated nitrate and sulfate concentration (up to 30 mg/L and 724 mg/L, respectively) were observed through active monitoring with zones of principal discharge identified in the lower A2 Aquifer. A groundwater seepage rate of 18.3 cm/day, calculated through the radon mass-balance model at a model area lake, was used to calibrate the numerical model surficial aquifer zone. Final shoreline seepage fluxes of 6.41 and 8.62 cm/day were determined from the results of both the multi-cell and shoreface numerical model simulation SGD approaches, respectively. The results of the two numerical SGD methods demonstrate good agreement with the 222Rn-derived methods, and provided an effective approximation technique that can be inexpensively duplicated in other similar shoreline areas.

Book excerpt: Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is a demonstrated source of fresh water, nutrients, contaminants, and other materials to nearshore environments. The terrestrially derived fresh groundwater component of submarine groundwater discharge (FSGD) is of particular interest in monitoring contaminant pathways to coastal regions. Because the chemical loads of FSGD can have ecological and economic impacts on nearshore environments, it is important to have generally applicable methods to quantify FSGD along the global coastline. In this research, I pursued multivariable regression modeling as a novel method to model FSGD along any point of the global coastline. Modeling was conducted using literature-compiled FSGD flux estimates for sites around the globe and a suite of hydrogeological and precipitation data sets available on the global scale. Additionally, I used an approximation of Darcy0́9s law, where the topographic slope is used as a proxy of hydraulic gradient, as an additional method to predict FSGD fluxes. The approximation of Darcy0́9s law method used global scale saturated hydraulic conductivity and global topographic slope data. This research was guided by the following questions: (1) Can multivariable regression predict FSGD fluxes when utilizing some combination of permeability, porosity, topographic slope, saturated hydraulic conductivity, precipitation, and soil moisture? and (2) What is the level of intercomparability between FSGD estimates from different SGD publications? To address these questions, I reviewed over 500 SGD-related publications to obtain FSGD flux estimates for 44 field study sites. These FSGD flux estimates were used in regression with the aforementioned hydrogeological and precipitation data. They were also used to assess the approximation results of Darcy0́9s law. The results of these methods indicated that the multivariable regression modeling based on field estimates of FSGD is likely not feasible with the current state of the data due to a lack of standardization in the field methods used to estimate FSGD flux. I suggest that research groups that study FSGD establish a higher level of standardization in study methods to increase the comparability between FSGD flux estimates. This would facilitate modeling efforts that rely on FSGD flux estimates from multiple field sites.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Comparatively, the seepmeter SGD measurements provided data that are comparable to manually-operated seepage meters, the radon geochemical tracer approach, and an electromagnetic (EM) seepage meter. Study of the Sarasota Bay (SB) system revealed SGD advection rates ranging from 0.7 to 24.0 cm/day, except for rare isolated hot spot occurrences where higher rates were observed. In general, SGD estimates were relatively higher in the middle and south regions (5.9 -- 24.0 cm/day) compared to the north region (0.7 -- 5.9 cm/day). Although no obvious seawater nutrient concentration trend was revealed, the average N/P ratio was higher in the north compared to the middle and south regions of the SB system. The importance of SGD was evident in that about 40% of the regional nutrient fluxes were observed in the north while ~ 60% occurred in the middle and south regions combined. The latter two regions also had the highest overall nutrient flux per water volume ratio, compared to the north region, thus making them potentially more vulnerable to eutrophic conditions. On average, we estimate about 27% of total dissolved N in the SB system was derived via SGD.
