At the same time, experimental approaches allow the researcher to exogenously vary components of the decision making environment. The synergies between behavioral and experimental economics provide a natural setting for the estimation of structural models. This Element will cover examples supporting the following arguments 1) Experimental data allows the researcher to estimate structural models under weaker assumptions and can simplify their estimation, 2) many popular models in behavioral economics can be estimated without any programming skills using existing software, 3) experimental methods are useful to validate structural models. This Element aims to facilitate adoption of structural modelling by providing Stata codes to replicate some of the empirical illustrations that are presented. Examples covered include estimation of outcome-based preferences, belief-dependent preferences and risk preferences.

A feature of the experimental design is that the experimenter presents objectively measurable objects that are imperfectly perceived by subjects. The responses are stochastic in that a subject might respond differently in otherwise identical situations. These stochastic choices can be compared to the objectively measurable properties. This Element offers a brief introduction to the topic, describes how psychophysics insights are already present in economics, and describes experimental techniques with the goal that they are useful in the design of economics experiments. Noise is a ubiquitous feature of experimental economics and there is a large strand of economics literature that carefully considers the noise. However, the authors view the psychophysics experimental techniques as uniquely suited to helping experimental economists uncover what is hiding in the noise.

Book excerpt: The thesis outlines the development and application of a few novel dynamic state estimation based methods for estimation of parameters of vibrating engineering structures. The study investigates strategies for data fusion from multiple tests of possibly different types and different sensor quantities through the introduction of a common pseudo-time parameter. These strategies have been developed within the framework of Kalman and particle filtering techniques. The proposed methods are applied to a suite of problems that includes laboratory and field studies with a primary focus on finite element model updating of bridge structures and vehicle structure interaction problems. The study also describes how finite element models residing in commercially available softwares can be made to communicate with database of measurements via a particle filtering algorithm developed on the Matlab platform. The thesis is divided into six chapters and an appendix. A review of literature on problems of structural system identification with emphasis on methods on dynamic state estimation techniques is presented in Chapter 1. The problem of system parameter idenfification when measurements originate from multiple tests and multiple sensors is considered in Chapter 2. and solution based on Neumann expansion of the structural static/dynamic stiffness matrix and Kalman filtering is proposed to tackle this problem. The question of decoupling the problem of parameter estimation from state estimation is also discussed. The avoidance of linearization of the stiffness matrix and solution of the parameter problems by using Monte Carlo filters is examined in Chapter 3. This also enables treatment of nonlinear structural mechanics problems. The proposed method is assessed using synthetic and laboratory measurement data. The problem of interfacing structural models residing in professional finite element analysis software with measured data via particle filtering algorithm developed on Matlab plat.

Book excerpt: The role of theory in ex ante policy evaluations and the limits that eschewing theory places on inference In this rigorous and well-crafted work, Kenneth Wolpin examines the role of theory in inferential empirical work in economics and the social sciences in general—that is, any research that uses raw data to go beyond the mere statement of fact or the tabulation of statistics. He considers in particular the limits that eschewing the use of theory places on inference. Wolpin finds that the absence of theory in inferential work that addresses microeconomic issues is pervasive. That theory is unnecessary for inference is exemplified by the expression “let the data speak for themselves.” This approach is often called “reduced form.” A more nuanced view is based on the use of experiments or quasi-experiments to draw inferences. Atheoretical approaches stand in contrast to what is known as the structuralist approach, which requires that a researcher specify an explicit model of economic behavior—that is, a theory. Wolpin offers a rigorous examination of both structuralist and nonstructuralist approaches. He first considers ex ante policy evaluation, highlighting the role of theory in the implementation of parametric and nonparametric estimation strategies. He illustrates these strategies with two examples, a wage tax and a school attendance subsidy, and summarizes the results from applications. He then presents a number of examples that illustrate the limits of inference without theory: the effect of unemployment benefits on unemployment duration; the effect of public welfare on women's labor market and demographic outcomes; the effect of school attainment on earnings; and a famous field experiment in education dealing with class size. Placing each example within the context of the broader literature, he contrasts them to recent work that relies on theory for inference.
