This book was released on 2008-04-29 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual defines methods for estimating selectivity of gillnet and longline gears, with particular reference to the use of these gears in abundance surveys. The manual illustrates how gear design, the basic concepts of size selection and fish morphometric data can be used to model selectivity. Statistical estimation methods are described in detail, and examples given of their application in spreadsheets. The efficient use of these gears in abundance and research surveys is also discussed. Although the manual concentrates on gillnets and longlines, the methods given are general enough to be relevant to any research involving gear selectivity

Book excerpt: Information from experimental settings of gill nets reported in the literature and data taken from commercial fishermen in Florida from 1973 to 1981 were used to analyze gill net selection on Spanish mackerel, Scomberomorus maculatus, king mackerel, S. cavalla, and bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix from Florida and Serra Spanish-mackerel, S. braziliensis, from Brazil. The information on Spanish mackerel and bluefish obtained from the commercial gillnet fishedes did not further our understanding of selectivity over that produced by experimental nettings except in defining girth-length relations. The commercial fisheries data appeared to reflect mostly the sizes of fish that were abundant at the time of capture ratner than the effects of selectivity. We did use commercial fisheries data for describing selectivity of king mackerel, however, because we had other estimates of the size compositions of the populations to adjust the gillnet distributions for unequal numbers of fish in the length intervals. Selectivity was evaluated under the assumptions that: (1) the selectivity curve would take the form of a normal frequency distribution; (2) the efficiencies of two nets with different mesh sizes would be similar for fish of their respective lengths; and (3) the standard deviations of the distributions for two different mesh sizes would be equal. Under these assumptions the computed mean selection lengths in relation to mesh size and species- were: Spanish mackerel - 6.3 cm stretched mesh, 30.8 cm fork length; 7.0 cm SM, 33.9 cm FL; 7.6 cm SM, 37.0 cm FL; 8.2 cm SM, 40.1 cm FL; 8.9 cm SM. 43.2 cm FL; and 9.5 cm SM, 46. 3 cm FL. Bluefish - 6.3 cm SM, 28.5 cm FL; 7.0 cm SM, 31.4 cm FL; 7.6 cm SM, 34.2 cm FL; 8.2 cm SM. 37.1 cm FL; and 8.9 cm SM, 40.0 cm FL. King mackerel - 12.1 cm 5M, 92.-1 cm FL. Serra Spanish mackerel - 6.0 cm SM. 42. 1 cm FL; 8.0 cm SM. 43.6 cm FL; and YO cm SM, 55.2 cm FL.

Book excerpt: We have written this book as a guide to the design and analysis of field studies of resource selection, concentrating primarily on statistical aspects of the comparison of the use and availability of resources of different types. Our intended audience is field ecologists in general and, in particular, wildlife and fisheries biologists who are attempting to measure the extent to which real animal populations are selective in their choice of food and habitat. As such, we have made no attempt to address those aspects of theoretical ecology that are concerned with how animals might choose their resources if they acted in an optimal manner. The book is based on the concept of a resource selection function (RSF), where this is a function of characteristics measured on resourceunits such that its value for a unit is proportional to the probability of that unit being used. We argue that this concept leads to a unified theory for the analysis and interpretation of data on resource selection and can replace many ad hoc statistical methods that have been used in the past.

Book excerpt: Stock Assessment: Quantitative Methods and Applications for Small Scale Fisheries is a book about stock assessment as it is practiced. It focuses on applications for small scale or artisanal fisheries in developing countries, however it is not limited in applicability to tropical waters and should also be considered a resource for students of temperate fishery management problems. It incorporates a careful sample design, various mathematical models as a basis for predicting consequences for stock exploitation, and discusses the impact of exploitation on non-targeted species. This was a unique concept involving a collaborative effort between U.S. and host country scientists to address issues of regional and global concern through innovative research. Unlike other books on stock assessment that show mathematical models, this is the only book of its kind that discusses how an assessment is carried out. It looks at the field as a whole and includes sampling, age determination and acoustics. The book represents the culmination of a nine-year program financed by the United States Agency for International Development to provide new or improved methods of stock assessment for artisanal fisheries.

Book excerpt: The book aims at synthesizing our current knowledge of Acipenser sturio and its management. This species, one of the most widespread sturgeon species all over Western Europe ranging from the Black Sea to the Baltic, is now on the verge of extinction. Major aspects of its biology and management, including mismanagement, are provided in a historic perspective. Similarly, the changes in the restoration programs (in situ and ex situ) initiated in France and Germany are presented. As the species occurred in sympatry with Acipenser oxyrinchus in Germany and Poland and very recently in France as well, a brief outlook on restoration-management programs of A. oxyrinchus are also provided for both North America and Northern European countries, namely Germany and Poland. As conservation-restoration actions go beyond scientific issues, non-governmental stakeholders and marine professional fishermen’s organizations have also been asked to contribute, and the key role of a French-German cooperation plan is underlined. A part of the book is devoted to perspectives. Illustrations of the European sturgeon, mainly in photographs, but also in stamps and paintings, are presented.

Book excerpt: Assessment of data-limited fish stocks is a rapidly evolving topic in marine fisheries, and is supported by an increasing focus on the socio-economic and ecological importance of small-scale fisheries. The challenges in such systems can be compounded in inland fisheries, which are often complex, spatially dispersed and difficult to monitor. This publication reviews the application of empirical indicators and simple size-based models usually used in marine fisheries, but also applicable in inland systems. It presents case study applications for important fisheries in the Amazon River (Brazil), Tonlé Sap River (Cambodia), Paraná River (Argentina) and Lago Bayano (Panama). These studies consider issues including spatial separation of life-history stages, strong modality in population size structure, and fishing gear selectivity. Local scientific experts interpreted trends in stock state. Empirical indicators showed strong decline in size structure and relative abundance for one of the four assessed Tonlé Sap stocks. The length-based spawning potential ratio model suggested that two of the three assessed Amazon Goliath catfish stocks, and the sábalo stock in the Paraná River, were below sustainable spawning potential ratio reference points. The Lago Bayano tilapia stock appeared healthy. The review concludes that data-limited assessment methods developed for marine stocks may provide guidance for the sustainable management of important target species in inland fisheries. The methods tested are probably less applicable in non-selective fisheries where small species are preferred, or in river fisheries with extreme dependence on flood pulses. Important considerations are species life history and spatial distribution, environmental variability, and fishery sampling strategy.
