Book excerpt: With increased competition and shorter product life-cycles, forecasting the life-cycle sales of new products prior to launch is becoming increasingly important to marketers and demand planners. Our study contributes to the literature on new product adoption using analogies by augmenting information from previous generations with pre-release search traffic. In contrast to existing research, which relies on pre-release buzz information only for the launch phase, we consider life-cycle sales. First, we propose a model of pre-release buzz and market potential, establishing the connection between the two. Then, we validate this relationship with an empirical experiment on sequential video game sales. Our finding support that pre-release buzz contains predictive information up to 17 weeks prior to release and can increase life-cycle sales forecast accuracy up to 20%. The explanatory power of pre-release buzz varies across product generations. This evolution opens up marketing opportunities and highlights why it is important to manage pre-release buzz.

Employing functional data analysis, we treat the curve of prerelease buzz evolution trajectory as the unit of analysis and find that the shape of the curve significantly adds power in predicting new product performance compared with using product characteristics and firm advertising alone. Moreover, daily prerelease buzz evolution data enable accurate sales forecasting long before product release, which allows sufficient time for managers to adjust product design and/or marketing strategy. For example, the forecasting accuracy using an early buzz evolution curve ending on the 61st day before product release is not only higher than that using accumulated buzz volume until then but also higher than that using the total volume of all buzz up until product release. Beyond the sales outcome, we find that prerelease buzz is quickly reflected in firm stock returns before product release and reduces the absolute amount of postrelease stock price correction. The model accounts for endogeneity, and the results are robust after controlling for buzz sentiment. We also explore the factors influencing prerelease buzz evolution patterns, thus generating insights into how to manage prerelease buzz dynamics to enhance new product performance.

Our findings are that potential output growth has declined in recent years in most economies of Central America. Lower capital accumulation and TFP growth are accounting for most of this decline. Apart from Costa Rica, there are no indications of significant economic slack in 2015 in Central America. Looking forward, potential growth in most Central American economies is expected to continue at an average of 4 percent in the medium-term due to structural constraints to capital and employment growth, and low TFP growth. Increasing potential growth, thus, should be a policy priority and structural reforms must be directed at improving business conditions, product and labor markets, and enhancing the capacity for innovation.

We show that, although still fairly uncertain, the real-time estimates from this approach are more accurate than estimates constructed from naïve univariate statistical filters. The paper presents illustrative estimates for the United States and discusses how the end-of-sample estimates can be improved with additional information.
