Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing principles associated with breeding animals for enhanced health and resistance to specific diseases, this book provides a review of the field illustrated with examples covering many diseases of importance to livestock production, across all major livestock species. Authored by experts in the field, this updated edition covers techniques and approaches, viruses, TSEs, bacteria, parasites, vectors, and broader health issues seen in production systems, including metabolic diseases. The book will be an essential reference for professionals in the field, scientists and researchers, students, breeders, veterinarians, agricultural advisors and policy makers.
Book Synopsis Opportunities for Carcass Trait Genetic Improvement of Canadian Heavy Lambs by : Erin Massender
Download or read book Opportunities for Carcass Trait Genetic Improvement of Canadian Heavy Lambs written by Erin Massender and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carcass yield and quality have a major impact on the profitability of meat lamb production. This thesis presents the first genetic parameter estimates for carcass traits in a Canadian heavy lamb population, as well as their relationship with economically important growth and ultrasound traits. The impact of alternative slaughter end points was also evaluated. Finally, the value of including carcass traits in existing terminal sire selection indexes was assessed. Carcass yield and quality traits were found to be moderately heritable and substantial genetic improvement was expected through selection. Alternative slaughter end points had little impact on heritability estimates, but did have an effect on the magnitude and direction of genetic correlations. The inclusion of hot carcass weight in existing terminal sire selection indexes was found to increase the accuracy and efficiency of selection, but further research is needed to determine optimal methods to improve carcass quality traits.
Book Synopsis Likelihood, Bayesian, and MCMC Methods in Quantitative Genetics by : Daniel Sorensen
Download or read book Likelihood, Bayesian, and MCMC Methods in Quantitative Genetics written by Daniel Sorensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-03-22 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, suitable for numerate biologists and for applied statisticians, provides the foundations of likelihood, Bayesian and MCMC methods in the context of genetic analysis of quantitative traits. Although a number of excellent texts in these areas have become available in recent years, the basic ideas and tools are typically described in a technically demanding style and contain much more detail than necessary. Here, an effort has been made to relate biological to statistical parameters throughout, and the book includes extensive examples that illustrate the developing argument.
