Book excerpt: Beloved Bible teacher Ray Stedman’s unique three-dimensional view of the book of Esther examines the story from three perspectives: as an historical document of actual events that took place in the life of the Jewish people; as a thrilling narrative of romance and suspense that reads like a gripping novel; and as a parable of profound and practical truth for our everyday Christian lives. The Book of Esther has amazing relevance for the turbulent, troubled times in which we live. Its adventure-filled pages speak to us across the centuries and instruct us in how God wants us to live in the 21st century.

Esther, representing the morning star, is part of a symbolic story of how the people of God triumph after an evil force (Haman) obtains the ring of power and sets a date to completely destroy the people of God. The Lord places the story of Esther in the Bible as a special prophecy regarding the end times we live in and the imminent destruction of evil.

Book excerpt: Unlikely pig owners Steve and Derek got a whole lot more than they bargained for when the designer micro piglet they adopted turned out to be a full-sized 600-pound sow! This funny, inspirational story shows how families really do come in all shapes and sizes. In the summer of 2012, Steve Jenkins was contacted by an old friend about adopting a micro piglet. Though he knew his partner Derek wouldn't be enthusiastic, he agreed to take the adorable little pig anyway, thinking he could care for her himself. Little did he know, that decision would change his and Derek's lives forever. It turned out there was nothing "micro" about Esther, and Steve and Derek had actually signed on to raise a full-sized commercial pig. Within three years, Tiny Esther grew to a whopping 600 pounds. After some real growing pains and a lot of pig-sized messes, it became clear that Esther needed much more space, so Steve and Derek made another life-changing decision: they bought a farm and opened the Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary, where they could care for Esther and other animals in need. Funny, heartwarming, and utterly charming, Esther the Wonder Pig follows Steve and Derek's adventure--from reluctant pig parents to farm-owning advocates for animals. Book excerpt: A GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK A BELLETRIST BOOK CLUB PICK For fans of The Hours and Fates and Furies, a bold, kaleidoscopic novel intertwining the lives of three women across three centuries as their stories of sex, power, and desire finally converge in the present day. Lily is a mother and a daughter. And a second wife. And a writer, maybe? Or she was going to be, before she had children. Now, in her rented Brooklyn apartment she’s grappling with her sexual and intellectual desires, while also trying to manage her roles as a mother and a wife in 2016. Vivian Barr seems to be the perfect political wife, dedicated to helping her charismatic and ambitious husband find success in Watergate-era Washington D.C. But one night he demands a humiliating favor, and her refusal to obey changes the course of her life—along with the lives of others. Esther is a fiercely independent young woman in ancient Persia, where she and her uncle’s tribe live a tenuous existence outside the palace walls. When an innocent mistake results in devastating consequences for her people, she is offered up as a sacrifice to please the King, in the hopes that she will save them all. In Anna Solomon's The Book of V., these three characters' riveting stories overlap and ultimately collide, illuminating how women’s lives have and have not changed over thousands of years.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Esther and Her Times, in a Series of Lectures on the Book of Esther But though the fitting word to the occasion is so im portant to the interest and profit of public instructions, we may not therefore argue that every preacher should confine his teachings to his immediate hearers; that printed discourses are unprofitable or that a reader may not, in some degree, sympathize withthe original cir cumstances that are involved in the speaker's words. We contend that no book can displace the living teacher of the gospel; but we claim that much pleasure and profit may be derived from the publication of discourses that have been preached before a congregation, and that bear the marks of adaptation to their particular occasions. There are even advantages which the reader has, especially in a series of discourses, over those that have heard them. If he is willing to make allowances for the feebler pas sages, that are necessary to maintain the connection for the occasional introduction and urgency of thoughts, that appear to him little relevant; for repetitions, that may be natural and proper in discourses separated in their delivery by weeks and months and'for the diffuse ness of style, that suits the pulpit better than the volume, the reader can better get the impression of the whole; better select his own favourable time for the lessons af forded him and better ponder the more forcible thoughts that seem to require more than a single hear mg. Book excerpt: Everyone loves a transformation story. Rags to riches. Plain to beautiful. Weak to strong. Esther's story is that, but it is much more. It is a thought-provoking study of God's invisible hand writing silently and unseen across the pages of human history. Perhaps most of all, Esther's story is the account of godly attributes like courage, dignity, wisdom, and strength?attributes that blocked an evil plot, overthrew an arrogant killer, and replaced terror with joy in thousands of Jewish homes. Author Chuck Swindoll interweaves the ancient, real-life story with insight not only into the virtues of Queen Esther, but also into how the qualities that formed and empowered her can be ours. Esther is the second volume of Charles Swindoll's best-selling series, which examines great lives from God's Word and reveals the strengths and weaknesses that make God's men and women both great . . . and human. Many of the most beloved biblical heroes were ordinary folks. Shepherds. Fishermen. Servants. Widows. Even harlots and petty thieves. One by one, they changed the course of history. Swindoll explains that these men and women did not become great in their own strength but were empowered by God when they surrendered their lives to Him. To live such a life that God considers great is within the reach of everyone who submits to Him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the way the book of Esther has been taught to us in church and retold to us in films, cartoons, and romance novels has missed the original point of the story? Far from being models of piety and devotion, Esther and Mordecai seem indifferent to the faith of their ancestors. How then did this story become part of the Bible and gain the broad acceptance that it has? If the church should not neglect the story, how should it be read? Esther and Her Elusive God calls Christians to avoid the common attempts to make Esther more palatable and theological, and to reclaim this secular story as Scripture. Readers will be encouraged to see in Esther a profound message of God's grace and faithfulness to his wayward people.
