Book Synopsis The Emergence of the Ethically-Engaged University by : Emiliano Bosio
Download or read book The Emergence of the Ethically-Engaged University written by Emiliano Bosio and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume examines the role of the modern university as a public good institution ethically engaged in social transformation. Featuring contributions from internationally recognized scholars across both the Global North and South, this collection contexualizes issues in higher education such as community engagement, service learning, citizenship and civic responsibility both locally and globally (e.g., local, regional, national, and global engagement). Each chapter addresses the intangible, multifaceted dimensions of the relationships, community impact, and knowledge generation associated with community collaborations. In this way, the volume contributes towards the possibility of re-imagining the role of the modern university beyond a market-oriented, passive, and de-solidarized practices towards a more ethically engaged paradigm based on principles of mutuality, reciprocity and social responsibility.

Book Synopsis The Mexican University and the State by : Donald J. Mabry
Download or read book The Mexican University and the State written by Donald J. Mabry and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, the National Autonomous University of Mexicon (UNAM) has made headlines when its students demonstrated or staged strikes and when the Mexican government responded with force. Few observers, though, have recognized these events as scenes in a larger drama of university-state conflict, described for the first time in this volume. Since the beginning of the Mexican Revolution in 1910, the Mexican state has successfully gained control of virtually every major national institution, giving rise to claims that Mexico is a corporatist state that penetrates all of public life. UNAM, the nation’s premier cultural and educational organ, has belied this claim by escaping the tutelage of the state. Since 1929 the university’s autonomy has been maintained and expanded, principally by UNAM students. Yet there are two great ironies in the conflict between UNAM and the national government. First, the students themselves have seldom recognized their role in determining the university’s ability to limit the government’s power. Contrary to popular mythology, the conflicts have arisen over many small parochial issues, usually limited to student-oriented concerns such as class attendance or examination systems. The second, perhaps grater, irony is that most of Mexico’s political elite have received their training from UNAM--training in more than academic subjects. The student movements have given political experience and exposure to many who would later become important state or national politicians. Thus, student struggles against the state have often been struggles within the revolutionary family. Donald Mabry has drawn upon previously untapped archives and memoirs as well as extensive biographical data and other sources to piece together and interpret over sixty years of student politics and their role in the university-state conflict. The result is a myth-dispelling, comprehensive analysis important not only for those interested in Mexican history by also for those concerned with student politics, with relations between the state and its institutions, and with the role of the university in society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines cases of accommodation and recognition of minority practices: cultural, religious, ethnic, linguistic or otherwise, under state law. The collection presents selected situations and experiences from a variety of regions and from different legal traditions around the world in which diverse societal stakeholders and political actors have engaged in processes leading to the elaboration of creative, innovative and, to a certain extent, sustainable solutions via accommodative laws or practices. Representing multiple disciplines and methodologies and written by esteemed scholars, the work analyses the pitfalls and successes of such accommodative practices, presenting insights into how solutions could or could not be achieved. The chapters address the sustainability and transferability of such solutions in order to further the dialogue in both scholarly and policy spheres. The book will be essential reading for academics, researchers, and policy-makers in the areas of minority rights, legal anthropology, law and religion, legal philosophy, and law and migration.
