Book excerpt: The purpose of the book is to assess the process of urban verticalization in different contexts through time, to provide insight into the relationships between highrise design and the way inhabitants negotiate them in their everyday lives, to assess how planners, politicians, and designers negotiate residential highrises in the strategies they develop for building the city and to introduce urban narratives and cartographies. Verticalization, although not new, currently takes place in a very different context than post-1945. Today, highrise residential buildings are more than architectural solutions: they are commodities in a global market where capital flows are fixed by developers and municipalities. Our exploration of residential verticalization is anchored in case studies, revealing different types of local-global negotiations in the design of the city, and has been framed by three interrelated dynamics: first, the complex relationships within the financialization of real estate markets, revealing differences in the types of local-global negotiations in the construction of the neo-liberal city; secondly, the most developed, anchors residential verticalization in the processes of socio-spatial differentiation within cities (mostly identified as gentrification associated to processes of urban renewal and densification; the third, related to readings and interpretations of the urban landscape and social, spatial practices and its iconographic and cartographic representations. This book is of interest to academics, students, planners, architects, and urban studies professionals. It shows that the chosen research object is an increasingly relevant angle of analysis of the contemporary city. It also provides a better knowledge of the processes of residential verticalization, their impact on the privatization of the urban space, and on urban segregation or fragmentation.

At the national level, neoliberal housing policy has overtaken debates around land reform. For Indigenous peoples, access to affordable housing remains crucial to alleviating poverty. But as palapas, traditional thatch and wood houses, are replaced by tract houses in the Yucatán Peninsula, Indigenous peoples' relationship to land, urbanism, and finance is similarly transformed, revealing a legacy of debt and dispossession. Indigenous Dispossession examines how Maya families grapple with the ramifications of neoliberal housing policies. M. Bianet Castellanos relates Maya migrants' experiences with housing and mortgage finance in Cancún, one of Mexico's fastest-growing cities. Their struggle to own homes reveals colonial and settler colonial structures that underpin the city's economy, built environment, and racial order. But even as Maya people contend with predatory lending practices and foreclosure, they cultivate strategies of resistance—from "waiting out" the state, to demanding Indigenous rights in urban centers. As Castellanos argues, it is through these maneuvers that Maya migrants forge a new vision of Indigenous urbanism.

En un discurso presidencial de 2012 se reconocía que se requerían más de 14 millones de viviendas para resolver las necesidades de la población que habitaba hacinada, en condiciones deterioradas, con falta de infraestructura y en zonas de riesgo. En este libro se analiza la compleja historia de la política de vivienda social durante el siglo XX, que no ha sido instrumentada de manera adecuada desde entonces para satisfacer esta necesidad. Dada la influencia de la iniciativa privada en esta materia, esta investigación se centra en el sector productor de vivienda a lo largo de distintas etapas del desarrollo económico de México y en la repercusión que han tenido las líneas dictadas por los programas y organismos internacionales. Por ejemplo, la cancelación de los programas de vivienda social en alquiler y el surgimiento en los años noventa del "libre" mercado como el "mejor" instrumento para dotar a la población de una vivienda acorde a sus necesidades.

En base a los resultados, se espera analizar el mercado habitacional a través de los diferentes Estados de la República Mexicana y poder reconocer oportunidades de inversiones inmobiliarias, así como la estimación futura del comportamiento del valor del suelo.
