It makes no pretense of being an exhaustive treatise on optics or a text book of diseases of the eye. These departments properly per tain to'the eye specialist, for whom this book was not written. But unfortunately they have drawn after them the simpler practice of refraction, and it is this consideration which has led the author to present the essentials of the latter subject in a separate and dis tinct form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ocular Refraction and the Shadow Test This book is dedicated to the advancement of the science of optometry, and to those willing workers in the field who are ambitious for its advancement and who are laboring to that end. The correction of errors of refraction of the eye with lenses is a noble work, involving the betterment of conditions under which mankind is enabled to enjoy the most valuable of the five senses, viz., sight. Without glasses many would never know the beauties of our world, while others would suffer ceaseless misery. The resources of optical science have bean greatly improved, its practitioners have acquired more knowledge and skill, and its value is becoming more appreciated. The limit of the possibilities of the work have not been reached, however. and this should stimulate individual research and study. There arc rewards yet to be gained. If this book proves to be a help to any. and stimulates new thoughts and ideas, it will not have failed in its mission. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Refraction and Accommodation of the Eye and Their Anomalies It cannot be denied that the practice of the present day leaves much to be desired in this respect. This is no doubt due to the defective Physical and Mathematical education which is frequently received by the Practitioner, and explains why he instinctively avoids the study of anything bearing a resemblance to Algebra, and looks upon it as something very difficult to be mastered, - something quite without the confines of his sphere. With regard to the study of the Refraction of the Eye, the amount of Mathematical knowledge which is essential in practice is, however, very easily acquired. Indeed, even in following the course of the rays of light through the entire dioptric system of the eye, as far as the retina - a calculation which, towards the end, becomes somewhat complicated - the Author has not found it meces sary to go beyond the elementary knowledge of Mathematics which he acquired at college, when studying the obligatory Greek and Latin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Refractive and Motor Mechanism of the Eye Vision is the sense which reveals to us the form and color of objects by the action of light on the retina; in other words, vision may be defined as the consciousness which results from the stimulation of the retina by light. The visual apparatus consists of two distinct parts. The first of these is the eye, which is analogous to a photograph camera. The retina, which receives and transforms the light energy into a nerve impulse, corresponds to the sensitized plate of the camera. The second part of the visual apparatus consists of the optic nerve and its brain connections - the conducting and interpreting mechanism - by means of which the nerve impulse is carried to the visual areas of the brain and thence to the centers of consciousness, where the impulse is manifested as vision. It falls within our province in this work to deal only with the former part of this apparatus - to study the eye as an optical contrivance and to investigate the adaptability and the imperfections of its mechanism. Light, the physical agency by which we see, is a form of energy. The science of physics teaches that ultimately all energy is one, but that by the various modifications which it undergoes different results are manifested from its expenditure. Light may be produced in various ways, as by mechanical or chemical action. Although light artificially produced plays an important part in our life, our chief source of light must always be the sun. The study of the laws of light constitutes the science of optics. In its various branches this is a comprehensive study, which would lead us far beyond the province of ophthalmology. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hand Book of the Refraction of the Eye: Its Anomalies and Their Correction The object of this little volume is to present, in a plain and practical form, an explanation of the anomalies of refraction and their correction. It substantially embodies the instruction given to the demonstration classes in the University of Michigan, and While it is intended, primarily, to facilitate the work of Junior students in preparing the subject, the perusal of its pages may prove of benefit to other readers. It has been thought unnecessary to go into the more intricate and scientific demonstrations of the refraction of light, Which are, happily, not of an extremely practical nature. The chief aim has been to go explicitly into every practical detail so that the beginner may not be lost in the labyrinth, and it is hoped that those more advanced may not tire of the minutia. It has been compiled during the hours Which could be spared from active duties, and though the writer has sought to be exact in all his assertions, an occasional inaccuracy may have inadvertently crept in. Any emendations Which my co-laborers may propose will be gratefully received and noted in a subsequent issue. I am under many obligations to my congener, Dr. C. B. Bliss, Who has assisted me very materially in compiling and arranging the contents. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
