Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of English Grammar Condensed for the High or Preparatory School There has been a need for a great while in the High and Preparatory School of giving pupils, as they enter, special aid in the essentials of English Grammar to strengthen their foundation as they pursue the study of higher English as well as the study of other languages. This course has been very carefully prepared with the main purpose of surmounting any obstacles which might hamper either teacher or pupil at this particular period by way of presenting, in as concise though complete manner as possible, the parts most necessary to the pursuit of any language. A Latin Appendix is added here merely to show how often we meet expressions in the form of quotations, mottoes, derivatives, etc., and how we nearly speak the language most of the time. A great advantage will be found in using this book in conjunction with other texts during any part of the school year, and it is hoped that by means of such a guide the old-time difficulties will be overcome and a new psychological role be developed in the form of mental alertness and enlightenment of self. The terminology will be found to agree largely with the new Grammatical Nomenclature which has been universally adopted. It might also be said that this book is a result of teaching for ten years in both public and private schools where golden experience aided in the development of this new idea. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of English Grammar: For the Use of Schools English grammar can in this way be made to pay back, with interest, the debt which it owes to Latin. It must be for practical use to show how far the endeavor to reach these ends is successful, in the work here put forth. I have wished to give the main facts of the English lan guage just as they are in themselves, not importing into them anything that belongs to other languages. With this in view, certain subjects have been treated in a somewhat new way, but one which will, I hope, commend itself to general approval by its reasonableness. The ordinary method with gender in nouns, for example, which was really an imposition upon English of a system of distino tions belonging elsewhere, has been abandoned in favor of one that is both truer and far simpler. The sharp distinction, again, of the verb-phrases or compound forms from the real verb-forms seems to me a matter of no small importance, if the study of the construction of sentences is to be made a reality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete English Grammar: For Common and High Schools This text-book of grammar has been thoroughly revised and entirely reset in new type. It forms a complete book, containing in one volume the work usually found in books on language lessons and English grammar. The book is divided into four parts, each of which is a course by itself. The first three parts treat of the same subjects, but each gives a more comprehensive treatment than the preceding. The work of the ordi nary school is completed in Part Three. Part Four deals only with the most difficult topics and those about which authors do not agree. The author has no sympathy with the notion that technical terms in grammar should not be used until the pupil has reached the upper grades. He can see no reason why children cannot learn and understand the terms nazm and wm, for instance, as easily as name' wom' and action-word. Therefore, technical work will be found in Part One, gradually becoming more dith cult as the pupil advances, until in Part Four will be found about all the technical work required for any examination. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in English Grammar: A Comprehensive Course for Grammar Schools, High Schools and Academies IN the preparation of this book, the essential features of Welsh's Lessons in English Grammar have been retained. Many chapters have been rewritten, others enlarged, and the entire work has been recast and rearranged. Two points have been kept prominently in view: (1) What the boy or girl of average ability knows of the use of our language before beginning the systematic study of its facts, and the laws and usages of its structure; (2) What amount of information such an one ought to possess of our language after having studied it intelligently for the length of time usually devoted to it in the graded and ungraded schools of the country. It is, therefore, assumed that they actually know some -thing concerning the language they speak and write, and that they are capable of learning a great deal more if they have an opportunity. The sentence is the unit of thought; its elements are words, phrases, and clauses. These taken separately are pieces of sentences. When properly put together, they are the vehicles of thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High School English Grammar: Based on Whitney's Essentials of English Grammar Since the first edition of this grammar was published in 1886, the Ontario High School course of study has been altered, and philological research has modified the views of English scholars on a number of subjects. The present work is intended to meet the existing conditions. It contains also the results of the criticisms and suggestions which the author has received from teachers who have used the old book. Like the first edition, this one has been constructed in accordance with the view that, while English grammar is a science with important practical applications, it is, when properly studied, an intellectual discipline of the highest order. Like the first edition, also, this one is on an historical basis. Only on this basis can the structure of the language be intelligently explained. "Old English," as Prof. Skeat truly says, "is the right key to the understanding of Modern English, and those who will not use the key, will never open the book with all their fumbling." But, although many of the earlier forms and constructions are given, it is not intended that they should be memorized. Those which exhibit the main facts in the development of the language deserve especial consideration; the others have been introduced merely to illustrate statements which might otherwise be imperfectly understood. In accordance with the best pedagogical opinion, definitions have been omitted in this edition also. The so-called definitions in Section II. are summaries of the discussions rather than definitions of the once favored but mind-benumbing type. It would be impracticable to note in a preface all the changes which have been found necessary to bring the book into line with modern scholarship and the present requirements of secondary education. One or two may, however, be pointed out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An English Grammar, for Use in High and Normal Schools, and in Colleges In the opinion of the authors of this book technical grammar should not be taught in the first years of the high school. In the seventh and eighth grades the pupils have already studied the elements of English grammar, as discipline in the analysis of thought, as a preparation for the study of foreign tongues, and as an aid in composition. In the ninth and tenth grades they have not enough linguistic experience and added grasp of mind to make the continuation of English grammar a profitable study. But if in the eleventh or twelfth grade (preferably in the latter) the student resume the study of the mother tongue, he will bring to it two or three years of scholastic discipline and experience beyond that of the eighth grade, and will be prepared to attack new and more dificult problems.
