Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Descriptive Geometry IT has been the endeavor Of the author in writing this text to include only those portions Of descriptive geometry which possess industrial utility and which develop the qualities Of mind so essential in a draftsman. First and foremost descriptive geometry should aim to teach projection. A draftsman must be able both to read and to write drawings with facility, and projection is the very grammar Of the language Of the designer. Secondly, descriptive geometry should aim to develop the ability to solve problems concerning the relations Of points, lines, and planes. These are, of course, but elementary parts Of all engineering structures as shown on drawings and it is important that a draftsman be prepared to solve problems relating to them directly on the drawing board. Thirdly, and perhaps most important Of all, descriptive geometry should aim to promote the ability to analyse a problem into its component parts, to reason from a given set Of conditions to a required set Of conclusions, and to build up from the drawing a mental picture of the Object which is there represented, for Without the ability to analyse, to reason, and to Visualize a draftsman is lacking in the essential qualifications of his calling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Descriptive Geometry It may help some instructors who contemplate using the fol lowing text-book to know how the authors have used the book in their classes. With this in View, the following general method for conducting the course is suggested and an outline of lessons given. Each instructor will, no doubt, need to alter the outline to some extent to suit the conditions under which he works. At the University of Wisconsin, descriptive geometry is given as a three credit course for one semester of eighteen weeks. Each week's work consists of one general lecture for all students in the course, one recitation, and two two-hour drafting periods for each section. One of the two-hour draft ing periods is sometimes turned into a one-hour recitation period. At the lecture, the general principles involved in the next lesson are explained, general announcements made, and prob lems assigned for a home plate which is to be handed in at the beginning of the recitation period. At the recitation, the stu dents are drilled in the analyses of the problems and then sent to the black board with some particular problem to solve. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Descriptive Geometry In presenting a new text-book on Descriptive Geometry, the writer is fully aware of the excellence of existing treatises, and appreciates what they have contributed toward a higher standard of technical training. The authors of these treatises, pursuing their several courses, have carried the development of the subject to a high plane. However, in spite of the indisputable excellence of many of the text-books, they seem to have failed to arouse the interest of the student, partly by ignoring the practical applications, and partly by making only a slight attempt to present the subject attractively. Some of the books are valuable only for reference and are useless in the class room; others are incomplete in the essentials; some are faddish, emphasizing certain features and treating the rest inadequately, while even the best convey to the student only a very slight idea of the practical value of the subject. This has given rise to the belief, prevailing almost universally in the student body, that Descriptive Geometry is merely a disciplinary study, having little or no relation to the life work of the individual. For these reasons the subject has been discussed from the point of view of a draftsman and the essential relations of points, lines, and planes have been treated in the third quadrant. The order of the material has been carefully considered and while there is some departure from traditional arrangement it is believed that the selection of material and its arrangement will be found both logical and conducive to a natural development of the subject. Many problems of a carefully graded character and of a practical "flavor" have been inserted at frequent intervals in the belief that such work is invaluable in fixing principles and promoting genuine interest. It seems needless, therefore, to include them in this elementary text. It will also be found to answer as well the requirements of colleges and scientific schools. In some Of its features, the work is similar to the author's Revised Plane and Solid Geometry; but important improve ments have been introduced, which are in line with the present requirements of many progressive teachers. In a number of propositions, the figure is given, and a statement Of what is to be proved; the details Of the proof being left to the pupil, usually with a hint as to the method Of demonstration to be employed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Geometry, Vol. 1 Descriptive geometry as taught in the Massachusetts In stitute of Technology is intended to lead to the solution of the graphical problems which ordinarily arise in engineering and architecture; to train the imagination as necessary in these professions; to cultivate the sense of accuracy; and to give facility in drafting and the ability to read working drawings with ease. Consequently this book, an outgrowth of printed notes, treats the subject from the standpoint of the drafts man rather than from that of the mathematician, placing reliance on graphical methods, and omitting analytical methods. Great importance is attached to the drafting exercises which supplement, at the Institute, the use of the book; in these the student works out a set of study plates which give printed data for a large number of original problems and applications. Considerable work in the projection of solids is given in Chapter VII., since the author believes better results will be obtained if, from time to time, some of this work be combined with the study of the problems on the line and plane. It has also been thought best to give problems in all four quadrants, but the book contains a much larger number of examples in the first and third for the benefit of students in architecture and engineering. The author desires to express his obligations for general sug gestions regarding method and scope to Professor Burton, head of the Department of Drawing in the Institute, who has recently studied abroad the methods of teaching descriptive geometry in the Ecole des Beaux - Arts and other French schools. Mr. Harry C. Bradley, of the Institute, has assisted in the many details of preparation; the selection of data for the examples and the making of the drawings are largely his work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Geometry for Students in Engineering Science and Architecture: A Carefully Graded Course of Instruction The writer offers the contents of this d104 Book as the result of over twenty years' constant teaching of Descriptive Geometry, and because he has found that a logical presentation of the subject, concerning itself largely with the best sequence possible, and with the introduction, at an early stage, of practical applications and well-graded exercises by which the first rules and principles can be practised, is far more preferable and satisfactory in its results than the mode of procedure and division of the subject matter commonly adopted in other text books on the subject. Difficult and complex phases of Descriptive Geometry and problems beyond what the average student has time to assimilate during a limited college course, and beyond What is worth while in such a course, are avoided, because of the tendency for students to become thereby discouraged and to acquire a distaste for what should otherwise prove to be an interesting subject of study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Descriptive Geometry, Vol. 1: Orthographic Projections Professor Church succeeded so well in his efforts to produce a practical and well-adapted treatise that it has continued in use as a text-book for more than forty years in the United States Military Academy and in many other academies, tech nical schools, and colleges. This long-continued use of the book speaks well for its high intrinsic excellence. During the last few years, however, there have taken place many changes in the methods of teaching the subject: and in the problems required. To meet these new demands the present volume is issued. In its preparation much of Professor Church's text has been used, and his concise and lucid style has been preserved.
