Book excerpt: Since its inception in 1969, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has been regularly assessing the nation's students in public and private schools, serving as a barometer of educational attainment. This report in brief is excerpted from "NAEP 1992 Trends in Academic Progress," which presents trend data in science, mathematics, reading, and writing. Approximately 31,000 students were involved in NAEP's 1992 trend assessments. Student performance is characterized at five levels along the proficiency scales, and percentages of students reaching each level are presented. For reading and writing, results are also presented for individual tasks. In general, trends in science and mathematics show noteworthy improvements since 1983, while trends for reading show slow declines for the same period. Writing performance has been relatively stable for grades 11 and 4, with a recent improvement for grade 8 that awaits support in subsequent years. Eleven tables and four figures present trend data in brief form. (SLD)

Pet owners frequently need them as boarding facilities during vacations, periods of upheaval or transition or whenever it becomes impractical for a cat or dog to be left at home. Serious enthusiasts need practical facilities for dealing with multiple animals and turn to kenneling to meet their requirements. Hobby kennels frequently become professional ventures offering boarding and grooming services while others are begun as businesses stressing pet boarding or housing show animals. If you have a serious interest in kennels, this valuable reference, by one of America's most respected authorities on the subject, will be your indispensible guide whether you are building, buying or converting part of your home as an animal environment.

The contributions, by leading world experts, analyse the most pressing issues in copyright, trademark and patent law as seen from the perspectives of the USA, the EU, Asia and WIPO. This volume, in common with its predecessors, makes a valuable and lasting contribution to the discourse in IP law, as well as trade and competition law. The contents, while always informative, are also critical and questioning of new developments and policy concerns. Praise for the series: "This must be one of the most enjoyable and thought-provoking conferences in the IP field. The high quality of the speakers is matched by the intense, audience-led debates and challenges which follow." The Honourable Mr Justice Laddie, Royal Courts of Justice, London "Faculty for this conference are always well-known 'names', well respected leaders in their fields, speaking with a combination of candor and timeliness that is unrivaled by any other forum of its kind." Honorable Marybeth Peters, Register of Copyrights, United States Copyright Office.
