Book excerpt: How do we know the Bible is God's Word? What is sin and where did it come from? How is Jesus fully God and fully man? What are spiritual gifts? When and how will Christ return? If you've asked questions like these, then "systematic theology" is no abstract term. It's an approach to finding answers every Christian needs to know. Bible Doctrine takes a highly commended upper-level textbook on systematic theology and makes it accessible to the average reader. Abridged from Wayne Grudem's award-winning Systematic Theology, Bible Doctrine covers the same essentials of the faith, giving you a firm grasp on seven key topics: The Doctrine of the Word of God The Doctrine of God The Doctrine of Man The Doctrine of Christ The Doctrine of the Application of Redemption The Doctrine of the Church The Doctrine of the Future Like Systematic Theology, this book is marked by its clarity, its strong scriptural emphasis, its thoroughness in scope and detail, and its treatment of such timely topics as spiritual warfare and the gifts of the Spirit. But you don't need to have had several years of Bible school to reap the full benefits of Bible Doctrine. It's easy to understand—and it's packed with solid, biblical answers to your most important questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the essence of charismatic Christianity, a renewal movement that stresses the Holy Spirit's work, the church's use of spiritual gifts, and the significance of the supernatural? Helen Collins gives a novel summary explanation drawn from the spiritual gifts. Through Scripture and doctrinal reflection, she shows that charismatic spirituality is a coherent, reasonable, and rich tradition with much to offer. Collins demonstrates how practicing spiritual gifts embodies a distinctive theology, making these practices carriers of doctrine. Using the Acts 2 narrative, she summarizes seven key emphases and associated practices: expectancy (prophecy), enchantment (miracles), encounter (healing), expression (testimony), equality (tongues), empowerment (evangelism), and enjoyment (worship). The result is a fresh introduction that is biblical, theologically robust, and practical, helping charismatic students to learn more about themselves and others to understand the movement and what it has to contribute to global theological discussions.

Book excerpt: In this book I talk about topics such as; the joy of the Lord, the gift of tongues, the Holy Spirit, laughter, spiritual gifts etc. I look at what the Bible has to say on each topic. I also look at both sides to each topic and analyze the pros and cons of various Charismatic teachings. For example, faith is good to have of course, but presumption is not. Believing that God is good and will bless us is good, but expecting him to definitely bless us every time we ask is not good, nor is that biblical. I asked several different friends what their experience has been regarding speaking in tongues or being slain in the Spirit also. Their stories and accounts are in here. The Charismatic movement is sweeping across the world and almost growing faster than any other sect of Christianity or any other religion. Therefore, it's important that we look at it and understand what it teaches and see if it's biblical. God said, "My people perish for lack of knowledge." Sadly in Charismatic teachings a lot of times verses are taken out of context, or they teach things that the Bible doesn't even say. I wanted to research these topics and be like the Bereans in Acts, who searched the Scriptures to see if things lined up with Scripture. We need to look at what God has to say about these things in his word, not just the teachings of man. So that was my goal in writing this book, to increase knowledge on these various topics, but also to look at them honestly. Most Conservatives just ignore these topics, some of which are in the Bible, or say they are all evil. But they fail to see what could be good in them. Most Conservatives ignore the Holy Spirit altogether, and that is not good. We NEED the Holy Spirit more than anything else in our churches! Amen. But! As Paul says in 1 Cor. 14, "Everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way." And that "God is a God of order, not disorder." So we need to find a balance to all of these things. And I pray in Jesus' name that the body of Christ can come to a balance at some point in the future. Amen: ) God bless!

Book excerpt: The biblical counseling movement must publicly distinguish itself from the charismatic movement by demonstrating that both the goal and theological foundation of biblical counseling will be undermined by accepting charismatic theology. A major attribute of the biblical counseling movement is consistency. This is manifested primarily in a biblical understanding of the sufficiency of Scripture and in its resolve to maintain focus on essential theology that accomplishes God's goal of progressive sanctification. The doctrine of sufficiency becomes eroded when essential theological foundations for biblical practice are undermined. Continuationist theology carries with it an inherent and necessary impact on the doctrine of sufficiency of Scripture. This primarily relates to its understanding of prophecy with regard to the authority of the message, messenger, and response of the hearer.

Book excerpt: Bill Johnson, Joyce Meyer, Heidi Baker. The fame of these names is evidence enough that, though the controversies are less intense, the Charismatic Movement is alive and well today. It continues to attract thousands of adherents who find its vision of a supernatural lifestyle uniquely compelling. Now, for the first time, all that is most theologically innovative about the movement is synthesized into five distinct and original ideas. These five brand new theologies have been created, not by theologians, but by practitioners who believed their concepts were inspired by the Spirit: Inner Healing, Shepherding, Word of Faith, Spiritual Warfare, and Signs and Wonders. Plenty of studies have been written by Pentecostal scholars about Pentecostal theology, but these tend to group the very distinct approaches of Charismatics together with Classical Pentecostals. Bold Faith aims to analyze and evaluate the ways in which practitioners within independent Charismatic networks, especially in their Anglo-American expressions, have responded to the challenges of secular modernity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only a few decades past, academia tended to scoff at the very idea of serious Pentecostal theology. Today profound and variegated theological implications of this dynamic movement are the object of exploration and development across the entire spectrum of the Christian theological corpus. Arguably, an acute need has arisen for identification and evaluation of the Pentecostal movement's original and ongoing theological "essentials." What is Pentecostal theology really all about anyway? This volume realizes that Pentecostal theology is at its heart a working theology undergirding and energizing believers' worship of God in prayer and praise, in holy living, and in witness to a personal experience of the risen Lord and Savior manifested in the continuing power of the Holy Spirit. Authentic implementation, if not explicit articulation, of fervent Pentecostal theology often occurs in the vitality of local churches, house fellowships, and various mission settings in America and around the world. Birthed in the fires of revival movements, essential Pentecostalism, including Pentecostal theology, continues to burn brightest wherever it is fueled most directly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the good news? If the gospel that Jesus taught is so good, why are Christians so bad? How can Christians relate to people of other faiths or of no faith at all? Bible teacher Henry Neufeld wrestles with these issues in this book. This is not a book of theology. It is his personal testimony of what Jesus means in his life, and how one can be both a serious, committed Christian and a strong proponent of diversity and dialogue. In fact, he finds in the gospel not just permission to be tolerant, but a command to be open, honest, and clear in his convictions, and yet non-judgmental of the views of others. Henry's understanding of Christianity is built around the incarnation. If God can cross the gap between the infinite and the finite to experience life with us, surely we can cross the gap between ourselves and our fellow human beings. "You are never more God-like than when you open your heart's door to another person. The more different they are, the more God-like that action is," he says in describing how Christians should seek to build relationships.

Book excerpt: This book is based on a lengthy international study process among Lutheran church leaders and theologians, all committed to charismatic renewal in the Lutheran Church. It led to the 1987 book Welcome, Holy Spirit: A Study of Charismatic Renewal in the Church, edited by the American pastor Larry Christenson. The present volume is a thoroughly revised, updated and expanded version by Norwegian Professor Tormod Engelsviken, one of the original contributors, that also deals with the further growth and development of the Charismatic Renewal since 1987. This is done with a global, missional and ecumenical perspective. It treats all the most important issues raised by the worldwide Pentecostal/ Charismatic movement, historically, biblically, doctrinally and practically. In doing so it attempts to be theological in content and popular in form. The book is evangelical, charismatic and Lutheran in its outlook and may serve as a textbook for pastors and Christian leaders providing both dependable information and spiritual inspiration. The publication is endorsed and supported by the Oasis Movement within the Lutheran Church of Norway.
