Most businesses were run mainly on the business acumen and knowledge of the trader without much study about the theories that ruled the world of business. While Economics has existed as a branch of knowledge since the ancient era, managerial economics is an emerging branch of economics which integrates business theories with practical business applications. In early days when business was less competitive, the application of economics to business was not considered to be important. But with the considerable amount of changes in the business landscape, and the cut-throat competition that dominates every aspect of business makes it important for business leaders in today’s world to understand economic theories and apply it prudently to the business to ensure steady growth and profits and to achieve the desired business goals.

Book excerpt: Managerial economics, meaning the application of economic methods in the managerial decision-making process, is a fundamental part of any business or management course. The current business environment presents managers with increasingly difficult decisions, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns, as well as the digital revolution and improved technology. It also features a new chapter on consumer theory, which emphasizes psychological factors and behavioural economics. Wilkinson adapts a user-friendly problem-solving approach to take the reader in gradual steps from simple problems through increasingly difficult material to complex case studies, demonstrating how to apply the principles of managerial economics to real-life situations. This book will be invaluable to business and economics students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic principles inform good business decision making. Although economics is sometimes dismissed as a discourse of practical relevance to only a relatively small circle of academicians and policy analysts who call themselves economists, sound economic reasoning benefits any manager of a business, whether they are involved with production/operations, marketing, finance, or corporate strategy. Along with enhancing decision making, the field of economics provides a common language and framework for comprehending and communicating phenomena that occur within a business, as well as between a business and its environment. This text addresses the core of a subject commonly called managerial economics, which is the application of microeconomics to business decisions. Key relationships between price, quantity, cost, revenue, and profit for an individual firm are presented in form of simple conceptual models. The text includes key elements from the economics of consumer demand and the economics of production. The book discusses economic motivations for expanding a business and contributions from economics for improved organization of large firms. Market price quantity equilibrium, competitive behavior, and the role of market structure on market equilibrium and competition are addressed. Finally, the text considers market regulation in terms of the generic problems that create the need for regulation and possible remedies for those problems. Although the academic literature of managerial economics often employs abstract mathematics and large corporations create and use sophisticated mathematical models that apply economics, this book focuses on concepts, terminology, and principles, with minimal use of mathematics. The reader will gain a better understanding of why businesses and markets function as they do and how those institutions can function better.

Book excerpt: For courses in managerial economics, this textbook, now in its third edition, is specifically designed for the students of management, commerce and economics to provide them with a thorough understanding of economic concepts and methodologies and the economic environment influencing managerial decisions. The book first lays a sound theoretical foundation of basic concepts, defi-nitions, and methodologies of economics, being an essential prerequisite for students to understand the theory of managerial economics. All the basic principles are introduced with mathematical complexity kept to minimum—essentials of applied mathematics needed for comprehending the under-lying ideas of models and theories of economics are covered. The book then moves on to systematically enumerates the various tools of analysis such as demand analysis, cost analysis, elasticity of demand, production analysis and price theory, and highlights their importance in managerial decision making through the concept-example format, wherein a concept discussed is immediately followed by a practical situation so that the reader can understand its application. The end-of-chapter questions reinforce a deeper understanding of the concepts introduced in the text. An exclusive chapter on linear programming emphasizes the importance of this mathematical tool in finding optimal business solutions. The book concludes with an exhaustive introduction to macroeconomics, analyzing in depth the concepts of inflation, income, savings and investments, and growth and employment in Indian context. New to the Third Edition Revised and expanded coverage of evolution of economic thought, and basic economic terms. An enriched inclusion of demand forecasting techniques, and the Cobb-Douglas production function. An extensive illustration of the commonly used pricing methods and market power. Value addition to the existing list of case studies to enhance students’ understanding of the theoretical concepts.

Succinct, faced paced, and challenging, students should be able to read the book from cover to cover and come away with a good understanding of how to diagnose business problems, and then fix them. With a lively, interactive approach, MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS focuses on the kinds of decisions managers face on a daily bases, making it an excellent resource for students pursuing business -- rather than academic -- careers. Managerial Economics: A Problem Solving Approach is a breath of fresh air. After having taught managerial economics for 20 years, I became dissatisfied with texts that confront students with graphs, economic principles only loosely connntected to business problems, and tedious calculations. I wanted a text that really helps students to see how economic principles could help them solve business problems. This new text does just that.--Ed Millner, Chairman, Department of Economics, Virginia Commonwealth University. With no experiece in business and no exposure to math since a D in high school trig, I found economics utterly incomprehensible. Then [the text] spoke one sentence to me, ... It all became clear.--PJ O'Rourke, one of America's leading political satirists and best-selling author of Eat the Rich: a Treatise on Economics. In twenty years, it will be seen as the standard way to teach economics.--Robert Litan, Vice President for Research and Policy at the Kauffman Foundation. It is for anyone and for everyone who is interested in the way people – and not just managers - behave and function around the world. Based on actual experience the title “Essence of a Manager” is a succinct distillation of what this book is about. It is not a management manual and yet it is a map for navigation and a guide for behavior which can be valuable for practicing managers at all levels. It formulates a sound thesis to describe the qualities needed in a “good” manager and builds up from elemental qualities to develop a holistic view of a good manager. Nine fundamental attributes are proposed as being necessary and sufficient to describe a “good” manager. It is applied management philosophy for a thinking manager and deals with the fundamental drivers which lie deeper than language or culture and which control human behavior.

This innovative text helps you sharpen your economic intuition--an invaluable skill that helps you, as a future manager, decide which products to produce, costs to consider, and prices to charge, as well as the best hiring policy and the most effective style of organization. With its unique integrative approach, the text demonstrates that important business decisions are interdisciplinary, illustrating how different functions work together. The text also provides an intuitive guide to marginal analysis and basic economic relations. Once you understand the importance of marginal revenue and marginal costs, the process of economic optimization becomes intuitively obvious. A wide variety of examples and simple numerical problems vividly illustrate the application of managerial economics to a vast assortment of practical situations. FUNDAMENTALS OF MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS, 9e International Edition, teaches you to more effectively collect, organize, and analyze information, giving you powerful tools that can help you become more successful--and satisfied--in your career.

Book excerpt: One standard definition for economics is the study of the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. A second definition is the study of choice related to the allocation of scarce resources. The first definition indicates that economics includes any business, nonprofit organization or administrative unit. The second definition establishes that economics is at the core of what managers of these organizations do. This book presents economic concepts and principles from the perspective of "managerial economics," which is a subfield of economics that places special emphasis on the choice aspect in the second definition. The purpose of managerial economics is to provide economic terminology and reasoning for the improvement of managerial decisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methodology is the ?eld which is indisputably complex. In the academic world, it is often said to be important, yet in everyday academic practice, it is not always treated accordingly. In teaching, methodology is often a mandatory course. Usually, it consists of learning how to adopt several common approaches when doing research, and how to conceive a research design (often leading to a survey). This usually leads to collecting data on a modest scale and – when the opportunity arises – analysing the data with the help of some statistics. Ask the students of their opinion at the end of such a course and they tend to heave a deep sigh of relief and say, “I have got through it. ” Then their real courses start again, in which methodology often does not play a role at all. We are of the opinion that writing-off methodology in this way is a real pity. It ignores the valuable role that methodology should play in academic teaching as a whole. Here, methodology is presented as a form of thinking and acting that, while obviously entailing research work, can also include the design and change of organisations. This broad approach has been purposefully chosen, as it is almost obvious from research and graduation projects that the students do not really have a clue what methodology involves and, therefore, wasting their time by producing work that has a little quality.
