Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two essays contained in this volume were originally published in Swedish under the titles of Det bestdende i kristendomen and Fšrsoningen en GudsgŠrning respectively. The first of them has been much used in Sweden as an introductory textbook for theological students. It outlines in nontechnical and more or less popular language the philosophy of religion underlying Nygren's theological work. Since none of Bishop Nygren's quite substantial philosophical writings is available in English, this essay can well serve as an introduction to his thought in that field for English readers. It furnishes something of the background against which Agape and Eros, for example, was written and can most profitably be read. It is also not irrelevant, despite the lapse of time since its original publication, to contemporary discussions of the meaning of religious language and ideas. The second essay elaborates a theme which in the first is claimed as a quite central concern of all religion and not least of Christianity. It also illustrates something of the theological implications of the idea of Agape, which is basic to the whole of Anders Nygren's theology.

Book excerpt: A New 2023 translation into English from the original manuscript, with an introduction, glossary of Feuerbachian terminology and a timeline of his life and works. "The Essence of Religion" is a philosophical work published in 1841 that critiques the nature and origins of religious belief, arguing for a Darwinian-historical origin for religion, and a materialistic worldview. In this work, Feuerbach argues that religion is a product of human imagination and projection, and that its true essence can only be understood by examining the human mind and its relationship to the natural world. Schopenhauer and Nietzsche both take their satirical criticism about religion from Feuerbach, and every aspect of Marxism can be found here in Marx's favorite Philosopher. Feuerbach is a critical figure in the development of not merely Marxism, but Materialistic Humanism in general. Feuerbach is critical to understanding Marx. This is Volume VI in the 2023 The Complete Works of Ludwig Feuerbach by Newcomb Livraria Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to communicate as clearly as possible Paul’s gospel of God in its depth, from what I have learned over five decades of studying Paul’s letters and theology. But, regardless of how much I have gained from teachers past and present, the bottom line is that “the things freely given us by God” in Paul’s gospel can only be known by the Spirit of God, through comparing Paul’s Spirit-taught words with Spirit-taught words (1 Cor 2:12–13). Luther’s grasp of how justification in Christ—and thus faith in Christ—is central, is verified by what Paul says in Rom 1:16–17; that in the gospel, God’s saving righteousness is revealed, from Christ’s faith to our faith. The message of this book can be summed up as follows: The life of the person in Christ is to be one of trust in Christ for righteousness before God, and, through that faith, obedience to Christ as Lord. This life is possible because Christ believers have died with Christ to the lordship of the Sin and the law, and are alive to God in Christ Jesus—owned by him as Lord, being one spirit with him.

Book excerpt: How does what happened 2000 years ago in the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ radically alter the human nature and life situation of men and women in every generation up to the present day? Pursuit of this question provided the initial impetus for this book, a study of two vital themes pertaining to the doctrine of atonement - representation and substitution. The author explores their meaning and role within the theologies of three significantly diverse contemporary theologians - Dorothee Sölle, John Macquarrie, and Karl Barth - concluding with a comparative analysis of all three perspectives in relation to each other.

Book excerpt: The Swedish Luther Renaissance began at the turn of the twentieth century and flourished through three generations of theologians who brought the challenges of their own day to their study of Luther. The last of these theologians, Gustaf Wingren, saw an increasing and deadly disjunction between faith and life in the church. Reading Luther he found two lively intersections: Christian vocation and proclamation. Using the methodology of his mentors, Wingren breathed new life into the Reformer's work and developed a Lutheran theology for his place and time.

Book excerpt: Martin Luther and other Reformers were instruments in Gods hand to recover the gospel in the Holy Scriptures. Nevertheless, it is an irony that, along with the gospel, there was still lawin the sense of law as rule of life, in the teaching of the Reformers. On the issue of the law, even Luther was not as consistent as was Paul the apostle. In The Grace of Christ, the saving righteousness of God which justifies the ungodly in Christ, and frees us from trusting in our righteousness is given its central place, as it is in the gospel of God (Rom. 1:1ff.). At the same time, the new creation in Christ is also given its rightful due. Following the apostles teaching, in terms of what Paul means by both justification and new creation in Christ, The Grace of Christ, like no other book, shows that both of these realities exclude any idea of the law (of Moses) as the rule of life for those in Christ. Paul is not an antinomian. The new creation in Christ is our rule (Gal. 6:15,16). Roessing does not base his position on only this one text, but rather shows how Paul consistently teaches this truth in many places and ways, even though the flesh rejects it. And Roessing is not alone in this view; he is close to that of Gerhard O. Forde, and even closer to that of Wolfhart Pannenberg. But this issue (of the believers rule) is just one of the aspects of grace covered in The Grace of Christ. For those who want to learn something of the depth of the things freely given us by God, The Grace of Christ the law in light of the Gospel, sets forth those things, so that the spiritually hungry will want to behold the grace of God in Christ as he is set forth in these pages, and to return again for more.
