Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Various Subjects The writer of the essays which form the con tents of this little volume was one who left an enduring recollection of his personality upon those whose' privilege it was to know him; and the essays themselves will to some extent account for this in the testimony which they bear to his many interests, his wide knowledge, his sound common sense, and his abundant genial humour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Librarian's Open Shelf: Essays on Various Subjects Those who are interested in the proper use of our libraries are asking continually, "What do readers read?" and the tables of class-percentages in the annual reports of those institutions show that librarians are at least making an attempt to satisfy these queries. But a question that is still more fundamental and quite as vital is: Do readers read at all? This is not a paradox, but a common-sense question, as the following suggestive little incident will show. The librarian-in-charge of a crowded branch circulating-library in New York City had occasion to talk, not long ago, to one of her "star" borrowers, a youth who had taken out his two good books a week regularly for nearly a year and whom she had looked upon as a model - so much so that she had never thought it necessary to advise with him regarding his reading. In response to a question this lad made answer somewhat as follows: "Yes, ma'am, I'm doing pretty well with my reading. think I should get on nicely if I could only once manage to read a book through; but somehow I can't seem to do it." This boy had actually taken to his home nearly a hundred books, returning each regularly and borrowing another, without reading to the end of a single one of them. That this case is not isolated and abnormal, but is typical of the way in which a large class of readers treat books, there is, as we shall see, only too much reason to believe. The facts are peculiarly hard to get at. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from It's a Good Old World, Being a Collection of Little Essays, on Various Subjects of Human Interest Magazine editors are genial gentle men. They pay us for the pieces we write and allow us to gather them later into books. To Karl Harriman, editor of the "Red Book"; George Martin, editor of "Farm and Fireside"; Harford Powel, editor of "Collier's Weekly"; W. W. Hawkins, General Manager of the United Press Associations, and Frank Ober, editor of "Association Men," who have given their cordial permission for the republication of the little essays that follow, I ex press my gratitude and thanks. The book is named in honor of our common friend, this Good Old World. I admire the quiet, patient fashion in which he goes around about the same old task, day after day and year after year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Essays on Classical Subjects Such unity as these Essays aim to secure is of necessity the larger unity of sympathetic interpretation of certain aspects of the life and thought of classical antiquity. Nor was a closer coherence desirable if the truest independence of the contributors was to be preserved. Two of the Essays touch at a common point, though but for a moment; and this coincidence was not to be avoided, as it is not to be deprecated, since asceticism with its passion to subdue the turbulent senses, is inevitably linked with the yearning after immortality which possessed some of the most earnest minds of the ancient world. Regard for a more intimate association of parts might have made a book of essays on things Greek or on things Roman. But the less severe unity of the present volume is designed to bear witness, however inadequately, to the Harvard conviction that, for the purpose for which the ancient classics have their permanent and inalienable value, the literature and art of Greece and the literature and art of Rome are so intimately bound together that they may not suffer divorcement. We are all of us Greeks, we are all Romans. The Greeks are the creators of the one original literature of Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Various Subjects, Vol. 1 of 3 The greater part, in fact, of the essays now pre sented to the public, have appeared as papers in the Dublin Review and they preserve in this collection their primitive form. This has been done, not merely to escape the trouble of changing the plural into the singular number, but because I feel that the plural preserves a modesty of tone, and a reserve of Opinion, which was originally intended, and would be lost by any change of forms. For, as I have intimated, the Dublin Review is the exponent of a system of views, to which, rather than to individual speculations, each contributor's writings should be referred. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures and Essays on University Subjects It has been the fortune of the author through life, that the volumes which he has published have grown for the most part out of the duties which lay upon him, or the circumstances of the moment. Rarely has he been master of his own studies. His first publications, the History of the Arians, and the Church of the Fathers, and, at a later date, his Translation of St. Athanasius, are the only exceptions to the rule. The present small Volume, made up of papers which he wrote for the Catholic University of Ireland, is certainly not an exception. Rather, it requires the above consideration to be kept in view, as an apology for the want of keeping which is apparent between its separate portions, some of them being written for public delivery, others with the privileged freedom of anonymous compositions.
