Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Macro-economics, general, grade: Excellent 1.0, University of Applied Sciences Technikum Vienna (International Business and Engineering), course: Global Economy, language: English, abstract: The division of Korea into South and North following the Korean War in 1950-1953, left the countries devastated and their economy completely destroyed. Both of the new formed republics chose a specific approach to rebuild the economy. Now, 60 years later, the results of each strategy are clearly evident. What were the key factors that boosted South Korea’s economy to the top position in the world? What measures can South Korea take to keep this front position also in the future? How could the different political developments influence the economic prosperity of each country? These questions will be answered in the following pages.

Book excerpt: Business, Government and Labor in the Economic Development of Singapore and Southeast Asia analyzes the inter-linked and evolving roles of private sector business, government public policy, and labor markets in the economic development of Singapore and its Southeast Asian neighborhood. It does this through 16 essays written by Prof. Linda Y C Lim, an early and long-established scholar of these subjects, and published over a 35-year period. For Singapore, often considered the world's most successful economy, the essays highlight the determining role of government's industrial and social policy through to the present day, when the growth model of the past faces many external market and domestic resource constraints. In the rest of Southeast Asia, in contrast, the essays explore how private sector business, dominated by the locally-domiciled ethnic Chinese minority, thrived and drove economic growth in underdeveloped markets with imperfect institutions, and consider if and how this might change with China's increasing presence in the regional economy. A final set of essays analyzes the forces underlying women's employment, from labor-intensive Southeast Asian export factories in the 1980s to Singapore's foreign-labor-dependent economy and its current productivity challenges. Taken together, the essays show how government, business and labor interact in the process of economic development.

Book excerpt: This thesis examines the relationship between the state's intervention of a different nature - industrial policy and pro-competitive reforms - and income inequality dynamics, using the Korea's heavy and chemical industry promotion during the 1970s and the pro-competitive reforms (1998-2000) as a case study. Chapter 2 focuses on the HCI promotion period (1973-1979) and investigates the impact of the state's selective industrial policy on sectoral economy, income distribution, and sectoral capacity utilization. The study finds that while industrial policy has a positive effect on capacity utilization in both targeted and non-targeted sectors, increased market power of firms in targeted industries significantly reduces the effectiveness of the state's intervention. The study also shows that the industrial policy regime is vulnerable to external shocks, such as an oil price shock. These negative effects can lead the economy to stagnation and thus excess capacity problems due to the reduced effective demand and over-investment in targeted sectors. Chapter 3 examines the association between heavy and chemical industry (HCI) promotion drive (1973-1979) and arguably the first income inequality hike in the history of Korea's economic development. Using an agent-based model (ABM) in which aggregate events emerge from the rich interactions of heterogeneous agents in the markets, this chapter shows how industrial policy that favours particular firms or industry sectors generates income inequality as well as a highly skewed income distribution among different income groups. The study highlights income inequality dynamics with special reference to the effect of preferential interest rates and discriminated access to credit markets among firms. The simulation shows the preferential interest rates for large firms in terms of asset size give a major impetus to the dramatic income inequality spike, compared to that of baseline regime (in the absence of preferential rate). Chapter 4 focuses on the impact of pro-competitive reforms on the market power and labour share of firms' value added during financial crises, using Korean firm-level data from 1990 to 2010 and difference-in-differences(DiD) estimation strategy. One of major findings is that surprisingly, the market power of top 30 chaebols was strengthened by pro-competitive reforms given that the reforms aimed to reduce excessive market power of high-ranking chaebols, and there was a significant decline in overall labour share of value added and an increase in the profit share of these large enterprises. The study argues that these outcomes are due to the pro-competitive reforms being primarily business-friendly and focused on chaebol restructuring, with relatively less attention devoted to labour-friendly policies. The study highlights the need for policymakers to consider the potential trade-offs between pro-competitive reforms and their impact on labour market outcomes.

Book excerpt: The economic success achieved in the last decade in East Asia has brought about a fundamental reorientation in the Western view of the region. In order to contribute to a better understanding of present events and future developments in the area, leading East Asia economists and men of experience in Asian business from Asia, America, and East and West Europe have written papers on their research or business fields for this volume. The individual articles deal with problems common to the East Asian region and the Pacific area as well as with specific economic problems of Japan, China and South Korea. The volume is divided into four parts: East Asia and the Pacific Basin includes articles on supra-national issues, for example on the international economic relations of Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea. Japan includes articles on Japanese industrial and business structure, technological policy, exports and other issues. China includes articles on structural change, economic reforms, fiscal policy, agriculture and other issues. Korea includes articles on economic and industrial policy, restructuring, protectionism and other issues. The occasion of the publication of this volume is the 70th birthday of Willy Kraus, who for many years has been actively concerned with the questions of development in the East Asian region.

Book excerpt: Over the past three decades, South Korea's economic performance has bordered on a miracle. Few economies have achieved such spectacular growth in such a short period of time. Korea's development process provides a sharp contrast to the lackluster growth experienced by many other developing economies and represents several unique characteristics even in comparison with its neighbors Japan and Taiwan. At the same time, certain aspects of its development remain minor mysteries requiring further examination and scrutiny. At the very least, the meteoric rise of a small economy and its people to international prominence after centuries of obscurity, disenfranchisement, and privation, deserves careful investigation and worldwide attention. This collection of 24 original essays focuses on the economic policies that led to the rapid transformation of the Korean economy. Among the salient features of the Korean experience dealt with by the contributors are development policies and the record of development; export policies--exchange rate, import liberalization, factor price distortions, and changing comparative advantage; production technology and total factor productivity; macroeconomic perspectives; conglomeration, business concentration and management practices; income distribution and labor issues, and urban and regional policies. Throughout the book, the role of the government in the development process and the dominance of large businesses in the economic sphere are analyzed extensively. In seeking to trace the relationships among various economic factors and to provide some insight into the process of economic development, this volume marshalls a considerable array of statistics and institutional descriptions as a background for analysis. This book will be welcomed by those studying economic development in general and the East Asian economy in particular as well as by those currently engaged in dealing with Korea.
