Book excerpt: It is of deep interest to researchers and practitioners in Information System (IS) to understand the efficacy of the traditional IS and economics theory in modern business environments such as online social networks. In the pursuit to understand such new IS phenomenon and address the gap in extant literature, my dissertation, identifies the strategies that the firms should incorporate in the presence of network effects; i.e., the increases in benefits accrued by a network user with an increase in the number of users, and its impact on consumer behavior. My first essay, challenges the traditional notion that network effects create a strong protective moat for the incumbent in network competition. I show that network effects are over rated in multi-homing setting, where users can co-exist across multiple networks under resource constraints. Over reliance on the strength of network effects by the incumbent firm in multi-homing setting, stems from extant economic theory that is applicable to single homing networks, where users has to choose one of the available networks. The first essay recommends strategies for the level of innovation and its time of delivery that firms should incorporate in order to survive and succeed in multi-homing environment. While the first essay focuses on multi-homing and the strength of network effects, the second essay revisits firm's preemption strategy in single homing setting with network effects, in order to prevent its users from migrating to a new entrant with better technology. I find that, for moderate levels of price and innovation competition, an incumbent with high reputation is better off being non-committal in its preemption. In contrast, committal preemption is apt for other combinations of reputation, innovation and price. While the first two essays focus on the impact of consumer behavior on firm strategies, the third essay delves into the impact of firm strategies on consumer behavior. In particular, I identify identity revelation policies that increase the number of successful transactions and collaborations in a socially embedded marketplace. The results imply that revealing social identities may be detrimental to negotiation and collaboration in a socially embedded marketplace -- a notion that is counter intuitive to networks that are inherently social.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Three Essays on Consumer Behavior in Virtual Community: eWOM, Online Trust, and Dynamic Impacts on Brand Selection submitted by Stella Yiyan Li for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in June 2007 As increasing numbers of people log into Virtual Communities (VCs) to meet new friends and solve problems, VCs have become an important social phenomenon that attracts research attention from different disciplines. Existing consumer research focuses on the individual motives behind participation in VCs and how brand-based VCs affect consumers' brand loyalty, but neglects the roles of the other important form of VCs, the product-based VCs. Moreover, the dynamic influences remain open to questions. By incorporating social capital theory and emerging theories relevant to VC research, this thesis aims to advance knowledge about the dynamic influences of product-based VCs on consumer behaviour in terms of eWord-of Mouth (eWOM), trust formation, and brand selection. The first study examines eWOM in VCs. WOM is a highly respected form of marketing information. However, because it is difficult to study WOM in the face-to-face context, researchers have limited understanding of its sources of effectiveness or its effects beyond product and brand communications. By conducting a netnography of beauty product enthusiasts in China in order to understand eWOM, the findings of this iistudy reveal four categories of responses: (1) sources of social capital, (2) brand choice facilitation, (3) persuasion knowledge development, and (4) consumer reflexivity. The thesis also proposes a model and offers a set of postulates to guide future research directions. The second study tests the antecedents and consequences of trust formation in VCs. IS research investigates the domains of interpersonal and system trust using streams of research based on different paradigms. Considering the continuous proliferation of VCs, this thesis proposes an integrative model that combines both trust components. Drawing insights from social capital theory, this study extends the research context to a VC sponsored by a commercial portal. Furthermore, it postulates that (1) structured VC contents and members' cognitive and relational motivations are antecedents to both trust components; (2) interpersonal trust is distinct from, and an important driver of, system trust; and (3) both trust components stimulate member online loyalty which enhances value for the sponsoring portal. Tests of the model's hypotheses using an online survey of 899 VC members support propositions in this study and offer both research and managerial implications. The third study examines the dynamic influences of VCs on brand selection. Various studies prove that brand-based VCs strengthen participants' brand loyalty. What remains unclear is how product-based VCs affect consumers' brand selection and how those impacts evolve over time. Using a longitudinal study of 277 members from the same VC, I demonstrate that individual motives (informational and social) and susceptibility to VC normative influence not only enhance consumers' loyalty toward a favourite brand but also increase variety-seeking intentions and consideration set size in iiibrand selection. Informational motives play dominant roles in enhancing variety-seeking intenti

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the emerging concept of a customer-centric approach to marketing, customer relationship management (CRM) has seen increased attention. Among essential tools to implement CRM is customer base analysis which seeks to understand and predict transaction patterns of individual customers. This dissertation, composed of three essays, studies the dynamics of shopping behavior in customer base analysis and its implications for CRM. The first essay provides an overview of modeling approaches for customer base analysis, reviews relevant research in the marketing literature, and identifies an agenda of areas that are in need for further research. The second essay proposes a modeling framework for multi-category customer lifetime value (CLV) analysis in a non-contractual setting. To this end, we model customers' arrival process, purchase incidence and amount decisions across categories, and latent defection in an integrated framework. The proposed framework makes use of a latent space model that parsimoniously captures various dynamics of multi-category shopping behavior arising from the interplay between purchase timing and choice across categories. Using category-level transaction data from a leading beauty care company, we show that the proposed model offers excellent fit and performance in predicting customer purchase patterns across categories. Our model allows one to quantify the contribution of individual categories to CLV and assess the relationship between shopping basket choice and CLV. The third essay examines shopping behavior of online customers. We develop a model that captures the clustered visit patterns of online customers and predicts how a series of store visits lead to a purchase. Our model is based on the notion that the arrival process of customer visits consists of multiple visit clusters with relatively short intervisit times within a cluster and a longer intervisit time between clusters. Because the start and the end of each visit cluster are unobserved, we employ a changepoint modeling framework and statistically infer the cluster formation on the basis of customer visit patterns through data augmentation in Bayesian approach. In our empirical analysis using data from a major e-commerce site, we find strong empirical evidence of lumpy shopping patterns by online customers with significant heterogeneity in the extent of the lumpiness. As part of our substantive contribution, we show that taking into account the clustered visit patterns can significantly improve the model performance in predicting purchase conversions across store visits.
