Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Shakespeare IT seems almost superfluous here to inform the reader that the author of these Essays on Shakespeare enjoys a wide reputation in Germany for his extensive re searches and studies in the English language and literature, as his name, within the last four years, has repeatedly been brought before the English public. The high estimation in which Dr. Elze is held in his own country is proved by his having been appointed in 1867 Editor of the 7aéréue/zer of the German Shakespeare Society, which are exclusively devoted to the study of our great poet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes and Essays on Shakespeare Seeing our dearth of information about Shakespeare is so great, nothing that may be of the slightest value ought to be neglected; and so it may be worth while to consider what scenes and sights may have been familiar to him in his journeyings to and fro from Stratford to London. The transit can be accomplished now in four or five hours; but it was no such light matter in the Elizabethan age. The distance is some 100 miles (by Oxford 94), and probably under ordinary circumstances would occupy four or five days to traverse, though no doubt, under pressure, a less time might suffice. These periods would certainly form notable epochs in the poet's life. What a change from "the smoke and uproar and riches of Rome"! No doubt he would seldom travel alone. Perils from robbers were too common and too serious to encourage that practice. But yet he would often be lonely enough; and many a thought after wards embodied in immortal shape must have occurred to him during these long hours. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tolstoy on Shakespeare: A Critical Essay on Shakespeare Altho I know that the majority of people so firmly believe in the greatness of Shakespeare that in reading this judgment of mine they will not admit even the possibility of its justice, and will not give it the slightest attention, nevertheless I will endeavor, as well as I can, to show why I believe that Shakespeare can not be recognized either as a great genius, or even as an average author. For illustration of my purpose I will take one of Shakespeare's most extolled dramas, King Lear, in the enthusiastic praise of which, the majority of critics agree. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eighteenth Century Essays on Shakespeare The purpose of this book is to give an account of Shakespeare's reputation during the eighteenth century, and to suggest that there are grounds for reconsidering the common opinion that the century did not give him his due. The nine Essays or Prefaces here reprinted may claim to represent the chief phases of Shakespearian study from the days of Dryden to those of Coleridge. It is one of the evils following in the train of the romantic revival that the judgments of the older school have been discredited or forgotten. The present volume shows that the eighteenth century knew many things which the nineteenth has rediscovered for itself. It is at least eighty years since most of these essays were reprinted. Rowe's Account of Shakespeare is given in its original and complete form for the first time, it is believed, since 1714; what was printed in the early Variorum editions, and previously in almost every edition since 1725, was Pope's version of Rowe's Account. Dennis's Essay has not appeared since the author republished it in 1721. In all cases the texts have been collated with the originals; and the more important changes in the editions published in the lifetime of the author are indicated in the Introduction or Notes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genius of Shakespeare, and Other Essays Shakespeare impresses us rather as a phenomenon than as a man. John Morley has used language of this kind in regard to Voltaire; but it seems to me far more eminently applicable to Shakespeare. The meaning is that when we come to appreciate such men, we shall think and speak of them as we ordinarily think and speak of great historical movements involving large masses of men. Unquestionably Shakespeare does produce this effect upon us. He is not merely first, with some other man like Spenser or Milton second; he is something apart, quite sui generis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay Upon the Ghost Belief of Shakespeare To disbelieve in the Objective Reality of Spiritual Appearances in general is the rule of the present age and is conceived to be one of the marks and consequences of its intellectual progression; and therefore is it we think, to be accounted for, that the above subject has never (at least as far as is known) been treated of. Most of Shakespeare's admirers doubtless imagine that such an intellect as his, could never have given credence to a Ghost; nor are they very curious to ask, how it was, on Artistic grounds, that the greatest Poet should have produced what many think his greatest work, upon a supernatural theme, or, in other words, upon a theme whose basis is either Nervous Disease, Credulity, or Imposture; for into some one of these things are all Ghosts now resolved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Education, English Studies, and Shakespeare In the present stage of Shakespearian study, I suppose it would hardly do, even in a book designed for school use, to leave the matter of textual comment and textual correction altogether untouched. Accordingly there will be found, at the end of the play, a body of critical Norm, wherein I have drawn together whatever seemed necessary or desirable to be said in the way of textual criticism, and of comment on such particulars of textual correction as are here admitted. In doing this, I have almost unavoidably been led to note a few instances of different readings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Shakespeare and His Works: From the Mss; And Notes of a Deceased Relative The Essays contained in this volume I am editing are almost entirely founded on the Mss. and notes of a deceased relative. They are the work of an author of culture, of high classical attainments, a traveller and a man of the world. They do not profess to be more than their name implies: a criticism of Shakespeare and his works, and not of the drama of the Elizabethan era; nordo they endeavour to compete with the writings of the learned and able men who in these days have devoted themselves to the study of our greatest poet. Before the Public Service took me away to the wildest of foreign lands, I was myself an ardent student of Shakespeare, and therefore I was indeed deeply interested when I read these Essays, which in general accorded so completely with my views, though in minor points I occasionally hesitated to accept them. They came into my hands in a very disordered state, and I fear that although I have taken great pains in arranging them they are still not as presentable as I had hoped. During a period of sixty years, from his boyhood at Eton to his last weeks at Putney, Swinburne brooded over the history of the Elizabethan poets, chanted their music, compared them one with another and celebrated their beauties in a voice that shook with adoration. No one who ever lived, not Charles Lamb himself, approached our great poet-critic in worship of the Elizabethans and Jacobeans or in textual familiarity with their writings. He had read and reread them all, even the obscurest; not one "dim watchnre of some darkling hour" but he had measured what faint light and heat it had to give. All through his life he held before him the design of a work of broad extent which should cover with enthusiastic analysis the entire field, and render future critical excursions in that direction useless and indeed impossible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Montaigne and Shakespeare: And Other Essays on Cognate Questions This said, I leave for another time, or to other hands, the systematic discussion as to what is and is not genuine in the Shakespeare plays. That these problems must and will be grappled with, I am assured. The recent confident deliverance of Mr. C. F. Tucker Brooke, that all attempts to deprive the poet of a large interest in any of the thirty-six plays have failed,1 is only a suggestion to the effect that, despite such admirable critical work as Professor Bradley's, little contri bution to the undertaking from English academic sources is now to be looked for beyond the useful item of careful collation of texts. Our problems, however, must be handled in detail; and it is possible to isolate for the time being the general question of critical method, and that of a particular literary influence.
