The product of almost twenty years of research, James Clarence Mangan: A Biography gives readers a definitive portrait of a man who has been both mythologized and neglected for almost 150 years. Although Mangan was the most important Irish poet writing in English before William Butler Yeats, his life-long refusal to publish in England virtually guaranteed his obscurity. Availing himself only of the periodicals printed in Ireland, he still published hundreds of poems and prose pieces. The poet of 'Dark Rosaleen' never left Ireland, and rarely left Dublin, yet in thought and imagination he journeyed from Siberia to Arabia and from Ireland's ancient past to the terrible present of the Famine. His literary career began in 1818 when he was fifteen, and the last poem to appear before his death - in 1849 - was 'The Famine'. He wrote for such nationalist papers as the Comet and the United Irishman as well as for the prestigious Dublin University Magazine and the influential Nation. Nevertheless, only one collection of his poetry was published during his lifetime. His complete poems will appear for the first time as part of the series of which Shannon-Mangan's biography is the first volume. This compelling narrative sweeps away some long-retailed myths about Mangan - that he suffered a life of unrelieved poverty, that he had only one love affair which left him soured on women forever, that he was friendless and always alone, and that he was swathed in perpetual gloom. At the same time, the author examines the poet's early childhoodas the source of his eccentric behaviour, his dependence on alcohol and perhaps opium, and the role that the supernatural and his belief in it played in his life. Shannon-Mangan depicts a startlingly modern man who in spite of errors and weaknesses created a body of work unrivalled in its time.

Le Fanu and Bram Stoker, use settings in their short fictions to recreate, depict and confront Ireland’s colonial situation in the nineteenth century. This study provides an innovative approach by targeting a genre (the short story) which has not been explored in its entirety— certainly not within nineteenth century Ireland - much less using a postcolonial approach to the short story. Added to this is the fact that it analyses how these writers used settings as an anticolonial tool. To do so, the book is divided into two major sections, an analysis of Irish settings and non-Irish ones. It works on the premise that all three writers used the idea of displacement to target colonialism and its effects on Irish society. In short, this book addresses a gap in scholarship, as the Irish Gothic short story as a decolonizing tool has not been sufficiently and globally studied.

Book excerpt: This book analyzes particular patterns of nationalist self-configuration and nationalist uses of memory, counter-memory, and historical amnesia in Ireland from roughly around the time of the emergence of a broad-based non-sectarian Irish nationalist platform in the late eighteenth century (the Society of United Irishmen) until Ireland’s partition and the founding of the Irish Free State in 1922. In approaching Irish nationalism through the particular historical lens of “Iran,” this book underscores the fact that Irish nationalism during this period (and even earlier) always utilized a historical paradigm that grounded Anglo-Irish encounters and Irish nationalism in the broader world history, a process that I term “worlding of Ireland.” In effect, Irish nationalism was always politically and culturally cosmopolitan in outlook in some formulations, even in the case of many nationalists who resorted to insular and narrowly defined exclusionary ethnic and/or religious formulations of the Irish “nation.” Irish nationalists, as nationalists in many other parts of the world, recurrently imagined their own history either in contrast to or as reflected in, the histories of peoples and lands elsewhere, even while claiming the historical uniqueness of the Irish experience. Present in a wide range of Irish nationalist political, cultural, and historical utterances were assertions of past and/or present affinities with other peoples and lands.

David Lloyd commences with recent questioning of Irish identity in the wake of the northern conflict and returns to the complex terrain of nineteenth-century culture in which those questions of identity were first formed. In five linked essays, he explores modern Irish literature and its political contexts through the work of four Irish writers--Heaney, Beckett, Yeats, and Joyce. Beginning with Heaney and Beckett, Lloyd shows how in these authors the question of identity connects with the dominance of conservative cultural nationalism and argues for the need to understand Irish culture in relation to the wider experience of colonized societies. A central essay reads Yeats's later works as a profound questioning of the founding of the state. Final essays examine the gradual formation of the state and nation as one element in a cultural process that involves conflict between popular cultural forms and emerging political economies of nationalism and the colonial state. Modern Ireland is thus seen as the product of a continuing process in which, Lloyd argues, the passage to national independence that defines Ireland's post-colonial status is no more than a moment in its continuing history.
