Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, I study different models of information transmission and discuss their economic applications. The models describe communication between a Sender and a Receiver, where the Sender provides valuable information and the Receiver takes an action given this information. In Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, I present the models of strategic communication and examine the signaling mechanism in different contexts. In Chapter 4, I present a team theory model of costly communication and look at the Sender's mode of communication. These chapters share a common economic insight: it is optimal for the Sender to withhold part of information. In each chapter, I use this theoretical insight to explain economic applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroeconomics has undergone profound changes since the Keynesian consensus broke down in the mid-60s. Axel Leijonhufvud belonged to that core group of distinguished macroeconomists who wrought the changes that brought back the classical questions to the subject: microfoundations, money, markets, institutions, information, transition dynamics and much else. He fashioned a whole series of conceptual innovations that have become part of the folklore of monetary macroeconomics. In this collection of essays distinguished colleagues and former students pay homage to this gentle intellectual giant. Issues that have featured at the centre of Axel Leijonhufvud's research for over 30 years are discussed by the contributors. History of thought, philosophy of science and transition dynamics in addition to the more central issues of money, inflation, monetary regimes, information, institutions, microfoundations, increasing returns and stabilizing speculation are some of the central topics discussed, empirically and theoretically, in these essays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the centrality of information/communication to economic and ecological processes, Communication and the Transformation of Economics cuts at the philosophical/ideological root of this neo-conservative policy agenda. Mainstream economics assumes a commodity status for information, even though information is indivisible, subjective, shared, and intangible. Information, in other words, is quite ill-suited to commodity treatment. Likewise, neoclassicism posits communication as comprising merely acts of commodity exchange, thereby ignoring gift relations; dialogic interactions; the cumulative, transformative properties of all informational interchange; and the social or community context within which communicative action takes place.

Book excerpt: Information acquisition and transmission are regular parts of many economic interactions, from product purchases to games of persuasion and markets for information itself. In my dissertation, I use game-theoretic techniques to analyze models in which information passes between agents. In several distinct settings, I show how policies which directly inhibit the transmission or usefulness of information can counterintuitively lead to better information acquisition and higher social welfare.

Book excerpt: (E-book available via MyiLibrary) In even the most market-oriented economies, most economic transactions occur not in markets but inside managed organizations, particularly business firms. Organizational economics seeks to understand the nature and workings of such organizations and their impact on economic performance. The Handbook of Organizational Economics surveys the major theories, evidence, and methods used in the field. It displays the breadth of topics in organizational economics, including the roles of individuals and groups in organizations, organizational structures and processes, the boundaries of the firm, contracts between and within firms, and more.
