Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Ideals of to-Day: And Other Essays on German Culture The essays and sketches brought together in this book deal with what may be called the higher life of modern Germany. For even in so far as they are concerned with earlier epochs of literary or artistic development, they consider these earlier phases only in their relation to the life of the present. Taken as a whole, they form perhaps a slight contribu tion to the psychology of the German national mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Collected and Republished: Jean Paul Friedrich Richter; State of German Literature; Life and Writings of Werner To speak without figure, this mode of life writing has its disadvantages. For one thing, the composition cannot well be what the critics call harmonious and, indeed, Herr Dor. Ing's transitions are often abrupt enough. The hero changes his object and occupation from page to page, often from sen tence to sentence, in the most unaccountable way a pleasure journey, and a sickness 'of fifteen years, are despatched with equal brevity in a moment you find him married, and the father of three fine children. He dies no less suddenly -he is studying as usual, writing poetry, receiving visits, full of life and business, when instantly some paragraph Opens under him, like one of the trap-doors in the Vision of fliirza, and he drops, without note of preparation, into the shades below. Perhaps, indeed, not forever; we have instances of his rising after the funeral, and winding up his affairs. The time has been that, when the brains were out, the man would die but Doring orders these things differently. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of German Literature It may be asked, why have we not translated one of the best of many German books on the History of German Literature The reply is, that, in some instances, they are too extensive; in others they are rather critical than narrative or descriptive, and are designed for readers who already have some considerable knowledge of the subject. The work now offered to English readers is moderately com pendious, and while many critical remarks may be found its pages, its general character is descriptive. As far as is possible, writers of various schools and of several periods are here allowed to speak for themselves. In' several of the quotations given, the form of abridged translation is used, in order to gain more breadth of outline. With the exception of two or three stanzas (from hymns noticed in Chapter XL), no translations, either in prose or verse, have been borrowed. The translations from minor poets, which may seem numerous, are intended to give a fair representa tion of German poets of the second class - writers whose genius is truly poetic, though not comprehensive, and who have especially excelled in their lyrical ballads. It is not long since a notion prevailed, that a review of poetical literature, with a few brief notices of history and biography, might be accepted as the history of a national literature. But theology and philosophy are, though not immediately yet closely, united with general culture, and we have, therefore, made no attempt to evade the difficulty attending the treatment of these subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Tales, Moral, Literary, and Philosophical The literature of the Germans is hitherto but imperfectly known to an y countrymen. Its halcyon times are past, its meridian Splendours eclipsed, and it is far gone in its Aphelion. In Germany, metaphysicians, like the so phists of ancient Greece, have usurped the rank of fine writers, and have cor rupted the genius of the rising genera ftion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Goethe's Literary Essays Of Goethe Sainte-Beuve held that he was the "king of criticism." Sainte-Beuve was among the most competent of judges on such a point, and Matthew Arnold has endorsed his conclusion. The reason for it is not far to seek. Goethe's gifts as a critic fell within a large whole of knowledge which was his in a degree for which we must look back over two thousand years to Aristotle if we wish to find a rival. He wrote lyrics that are supreme in their kind. His capacity for observation of nature was, as Helmholtz has pointed out, of the first order. Although he hated philosophy, he had, none the less, a fine instinct for great metaphysical conceptions. Spinoza and Kant both made appeal to him, and the appeal was responded to from the depths of his nature. The world has seen no poem like Faust, with the exquisite perfection of the "Dedication" and the lyrical outbursts with which the first part is studded, set in a structure which signifies a profound conception of life as a whole, into which far-reaching reflection has entered. The second part of the drama is as great in this latter regard as is the first part in its occasional exhibitions of the purest lyrical gift. Goethe's work was uneven, as was his life. That is what we must expect from the variety which both contained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays: The Portraits of John Knox; Taylor's Historic Survey of German Literature Knox, twenty-one years ago (knox had left Geneva in Jan uary, 1559, and, preaching to a group of poor English exiles, probably was never very conspicuous there), had testified to Beza or to Goulart that the Beza Figure-head was by no means a likeness of Knox which fatal information, on. In quiry, had been confirmed into clear proof in the negative, and that Beza and Goulart had thereupon becomeconvinced and Goulart, with Beza, takinga fresh and again unfortunate departure, 'had agreed that here was the 'real Dromio, and had silently inserted William Tyndale accordingly. This is only a vague hypothesis, for why did not the old or middle aged inhabitant of Geneva testify with equal certainty that the Tyndale wood-cut was just as little a likeness of Knox, and'check Goulart and Beza in their new unfortunate advent ure? But to us the conclusion, which is not hypothetical at all, must surely be that neither Beza nor Goulart had any knowledge whatever of the real physiognomy or figure of J o hannes Cnoxus, and in all subsequent researches On that sub ject are to be considered mutually annihilative and any tes timony they could give mere zero, and of no account at all. This, however, was by no means the result which actually followed. Twenty-two years after this of Beza a Dutch Theologian, one Verheiden, whose knowledge of theological Icons was probably much more distinct than Beza's, published at the Hague a folio entitled Praestantium aliquot Theologorum etc. Efiigies, in which Knox figures in the following new form done, as the signature bears, by Hondius, an Engraver of known merit, but cognizant seemingly of Beza's Book only, and quite ignorant Of Goulart's translation and its Tyndale Knox, who presents us, to our surprise, on this Occasion with the following portrait considerably more alive and credible as a human being than beza's'figure-head; and bearing on it the monogram of Hondius; so that at least its authorship is indisputable.
