Voxi Heinrich Amavilah, Progress in Development Studies This valuable and engaging new book bears eloquent testimony to A.P. Thirlwall s substantial contribution to economics over the last 40 years. The volume does not attempt to provide a comprehensive review of such a prolific figure, but rather demonstrates the considerable influence that his work on economic theory has had on his contemporaries, and the profession as a whole. From his early pioneering research in regional and labour economics to his more recent exploration of growth and development economics, leading experts in the field bear witness to the significant role he has played in the evolution of the discipline. In addressing some of the most pivotal aspects of his career, the contributors cover a range of topics including Thirlwall s Law , the application of Keynesian macroeconomic approaches, the General Theory within open economies, the connection between short-run cycles and long-run growth, endogenous growth theory, the Stability and Growth Pact, as well as broader development issues and problems. In championing Thirlwall s challenging work, this volume provides a lively and comprehensive account of some of the most important areas of economics today. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '... a well written book ... covering ... a vast amount of material ... well balanced between the theoretical and applied works. The authors are judicious and fair in providing a balanced treatment of the two alternative theories of growth performance: supply-oriented and demand-oriented. The book will serve as a guideline to researchers and policymakers ... as a textbook for upperdivision undergraduate and graduate courses.'- Kashi Nath Tiwari, Kennesaw State College This is the first book of its kind to argue in a consistent and comprehensive way the idea that a country's growth performance cannot be properly understood without reference to the performance of its tradeable goods sector and the strength of its balance of payments. It puts forward a demand orientated theory of why growth rates differ between countries where the major constraint on demand is the balance of payments. The book is critical of neoclassical growth analysis and provides an alternative theory of growth performance to the supply orientated approach of neoclassical theory. There are theoretical chapters comparing and contrasting neoclassical growth analysis with the new demand orientated approach, and empirical sections which apply the new model to regions and countries, including two case studies of the UK and Australia.
Book Synopsis General Equilibrium, Growth, and Trade by : Jerry R. Green
Download or read book General Equilibrium, Growth, and Trade written by Jerry R. Green and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Equilibrium, Growth, and Trade: Essays in Honor of Lionel McKenzie provides information pertinent to the three main areas of Professor McKenzie's scientific research, namely, international trade, economic growth, and general equilibrium theory. This book highlights the main aspects of McKenzie's work. Organized into three parts encompassing 21 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the regularizing effects of aggregation over nonregular microrelations. This text then examines the theory of a multiperiod monopolist incurring nonseparable labor adjustment costs, which is developed when investment is irreversible. Other chapters consider the behavior of a price-maker in a competitive market as a preliminary step to a more complete analysis of pure competition. This book discusses as well the effects of uncertainty on optimal decisions, which constitutes an increasingly essential area of economic research. The final chapter deals with the general equilibrium macroeconomic model. This book is a valuable resource for economists and economic theorists.
Book Synopsis The Hobbled Giant by : Stanley Please
Download or read book The Hobbled Giant written by Stanley Please and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-24 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984. In these essays, Stanley Please contends that the World Bank is constrained in its ability to use its position and .power in the interests of more rapid development of the poorer countries of the world. These constraints derive in large part from the legal restriction on the Bank to engage primarily in project lending and from the division of responsibility between the ·Bank and its sister institution, the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Although the Bank's financing of projects and investment programs has made a significant contribution, Mr. Please argues that greater Bank involvement in national policy formation can greatly benefit economic development. He looks at ways to increase cooperation between the Bank and the IMF, examines the policy work the Bank has done in the past and assesses the capacity of the Bank for policy formation, evaluates the need for it to do more such work, and discusses the likely responses of developing and developed countries to these changes

Book Synopsis Taking Money Seriously and Other Essays by : David E. W. Laidler
Download or read book Taking Money Seriously and Other Essays written by David E. W. Laidler and published by Cambridge, Mass. : MIT Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Putting the matters back into money matters is David Laidler's intent in this collection of ten essays on the role of monetary institutions in the development of monetary theory and the implications of these ideas for policy. Together, the essays provide a coherent and accessible introduction to the power and range of thinking by one of the world's leading monetary economists. In Taking Money Seriously Laidler seeks to develop and sustain monetarist ideas of the 1960s in relationship to the new classical economics and to argue their continued policy relevance. Money matters, he points out, because monetary exchange rather than the Walrasian market coordinates economic activity in the real world. Laidler's discussion of the costs of inflation points up the importance of money's means-of-exchange role and is followed by an extended critique of new classical economics. He devotes several chapters to policy issues, in which he asserts that the monetary system is a public good whose organization and control present inherently political problems. David Laidler is Professor of Economics at the University of Western Ontario.
Book Synopsis Balance of Payments Constrained Economic Growth in Nigeria by : Emmanuel Igbinoba
Download or read book Balance of Payments Constrained Economic Growth in Nigeria written by Emmanuel Igbinoba and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-05-13 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - General, , language: English, abstract: This paper assesses the Thirwall's balance of payment(BOP) constrained model by applying it on the Nigerian economy and employing cointegration method to observe the relationship between economic growth and current account balance equilibrium. While extensive research study on economic growth concentrate on the neoclassical supply-oriented approach based on the production function and full employment, Harrod(1939) emphasized that demand generated growth determine long run economic growth and Thirwall developed a Keynesian perspective of the determinants of growth embedded on a dynamic version of the Harrod's foreign trade multiplier. Thirwall pinpoints the incapability of economic agents to increase aggregate demand indefinitely in open economies as justification for income growth differences across nations. The balance of payment constrained growth model states that a country's economic growth rate is constrained by the desire to generate foreign exchange and reiterate the function of demand as the motivation for domestic growth. This arises because growth in export and investment growth in import substitution are the only aspect of aggregate demand that can increase GDP growth and reduce foreign constraints. This implies that growth rate is constrained by the balance of payment as the economy cannot grow faster than what is consistent with the balance of payment equilibrium. The principle of this Keynesian demand side growth theory is that export capability and import attitude establish long run economic growth. Income derived from external trade constitute the principal medium to finance growing import due to a rise in domestic activities. This model differ from the supply induced growth models which evaluate economic growth by using factor inputs such as savings, human and physical capital, population growth and initial per capital GDP on economic growth. Reservations about the traditional growth models stem from the fact that the factor inputs have inconclusive roles in the growth process in developing countries. Also a lot of the neoclassical assumptions have been observed to be unapplicable in developing or transition economies. The balance of payment constrained model infer that economic growth are stimulated by demand factors and the main constraint on demand is the balance of payment.
Book Synopsis Economic Dynamics, Trade and Growth by : A.P. Thirlwall
Download or read book Economic Dynamics, Trade and Growth written by A.P. Thirlwall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Roy Harrod was one of the foremost economists of the twentieth century who made pioneering contributions in several branches of economics including: trade cycle theory; growth theory; trade theory; monetary economics; imperfect competition theory, and methodology. This volume arises out of a conference to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the publication of his book The Trade Cycle in 1936. After an introductory essay by Walter Eltis, a student of Harrod, this volume contains important essays on the interpretation of Harrod's work in the field of economic dynamics by Danial Besomi and Maurizio Pugno, and in the field of trade and growth by Tony Thirlwall, John McCombie and Luca Bendictis. Finally, Warren Young, in the process of writing Harrod's biography, uses correspondence between Harrod and Haberler to elucidate Harrod's views on trade theory, international monetary reform and inflation.
