Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Tales, Moral, Literary, and Philosophical The literature of the Germans is hitherto but imperfectly known to an y countrymen. Its halcyon times are past, its meridian Splendours eclipsed, and it is far gone in its Aphelion. In Germany, metaphysicians, like the so phists of ancient Greece, have usurped the rank of fine writers, and have cor rupted the genius of the rising genera ftion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical, Literary, and Philosophical Essays By the principles of our undertaking, we are pledged not to advance any opinions on the grand controversy be tween the religious establishment of our country and the dissenters from its communion - or more precisely, we are engaged to avoid discussing the abstract propriety of an establishment, and also the propriety of that form of it now existing in the country. These are ques tions, it is true, quite distinct from the conduct of the established church, or any of its distinguished members, as political agents in the transactions of a history. Viewed in this light, their operations, their influence, their vir tues, or their vices, are just as fair subjects of observation as those of any other of the agents, involved in our na tional history. But it is not certain that we can exercise our right to this undoubted extent without giving consider able off'ence. Even at this liberal period, there are some whom it would be hard to avoid offending, and in whose opinions we should scarcely seem to preserve our pledged neutrality, while condemning the violent and fatal intoler ance of the church during the reigns of the Jameses and Charleses, though it be evidently impossible to discuss the merits, or even to narrate the events of those reigns without it.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Literary, Moral and Philosophical Most of the following Essays were published in the Museum, and Columbian Magazine, in this City, soon after the end of the revolutionary war in the United States. A few of them made their first appearance in pamphlets. They are now published in a single volume, at the request of several friends, and with a view of promoting the ends at first contemplated by them. Two of the Essays, viz: that upon the use of Tobacco, and the account of remarkable circumstances in the constitution and life of Ann Woods, are now submitted for the first time to the eye of the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Literary, Moral and Political Some people are subject to a certain delicacy of passion, which makes them extremely sensible to all the accidents of life, and gives them a lively joy upon every prosperous event, as well as a piercing grief, when they meet with misfortunes and adversity. Favours and good offices easily engage their friendship while the smallest injury provokes their resentment. Any honour or mark of distinction elevates them above measure; but they are as sensibly touched with contempt. People of this character have, no doubt, more lively enjoyments, as well as more pungent sorrows, than men of cool and sedate tempers but, I believe, when everything is balanced, there is no one, who would not rather be of the latter character, were he entirely master of his own disposition. Good or ill fortune Is very little at our disposal: and when a pe_r_son. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The essay on Eclecticism explains a doctrine and a tendency which pervade the volume, and color it throughout. Only one or two of the perennial problems, how ever, those questions of the ages, which reappear in all the literature of Philosophy, - are discussed and these are dealt with less in relation to the tendencies of the time than in their permanent aspects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Literature: A Series of Essays And whatever may be thought of some of his opinions on matters of detail - on anonymity, for instance, or on the question whether good work is never done for money - there can be no doubt that his general view of literature, and the conditions under which it flourishes, is perfectly sound. It might be thought, perhaps, that remarks which were meant to apply to the German language would have but little bearing upon one so different from it as English. This would be a just objection if Schopenhauer treated literature in a petty spirit, and confined himself to pedantic inquiries into matters of grammar and etymology, or mere niceties of phrase. But this is not so. He deals with his subject broadly, and takes large and general views; nor can anyone who knows anything of the philosopher suppose this to mean that he is vague and feeble. It is true that now and again in the course of these essays he makes remarks which are obviously meant to apply to the failings of certain writers of his own age and country; but in such a case I have generally given his sentences a turn, which, while keeping them faithful to the spirit of the original, secures for them a less restricted range, and makes Schopenhauer a critic of similar faults in whatever age or country they may appear.
