Bentham, again, un sparing though he was in his criticism of Blackstone, agreed with him in seeing the necessity of forming a clear conception of sovereignty. But this occupied a quite secondary place in his work, which was to demonstrate the purposes for which government exists, and the methods by which it might best attain its ends. Lastly, Austin, in his Province of Juris prudence Determined, has defined sovereignty in a manner that has laid for.all time a sure foundation for the science of positive law. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Practical Politics These two essays appeared originally in the Century. Both alike were criticised at the time as offering no cure for the evils they portrayed. Such a criticism shows, in the first place, a curious ignorance of what is meant by the diagnosis of a disease; for my articles pretended to do nothing more than give what has apparently never before been given, an accurate account of certain phases of our political life, with its good and bad impartially set forth. The practical poli tician, who alone knows how our politics are really managed, is rarely willing to write about them, unless with very large reservations, while the student-reformer whose political experience is limited to the dinner table, the debating Club, or an occasional mass-meeting Where none but his friends are present, and who yet seeks. In pamphlet or editorial column to make clear the subject, hardly ever knows exactly what he is talking about, and abuses the system in all its parts with such looseness of language as to wholly take away the value even from such of his utterances as are true. Book Synopsis Essays on Church, State, and Politics by : Christian Thomasius
Download or read book Essays on Church, State, and Politics written by Christian Thomasius and published by Natural Law and Enlightenment. This book was released on 2007 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays selected here for translation derive largely from Thomasius's work on Staatskirchenrecht, or the political jurisprudence of church law. These works, originating as disputations, theses, and pamphlets, were direct interventions in the unresolved issue of the political role of religion in Brandenburg-Prussia, a state in which a Calvinist dynasty ruled over a largely Lutheran population and nobility as well as a significant Catholic minority. In mandating limited religious toleration within the German states, the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia (1648) also provided the rulers of Brandenburg-Prussia with a way of keeping the powerful Lutheran church in check by guaranteeing a degree of religious freedom to non-Lutherans and thereby detaching the state from the most powerful territorial church. Thomasius's writings on church-state relations, many of them critical of the civil claims made by Lutheran theologians, are a direct response to this state of affairs. At the same time, owing to the depth of intellectual resources at his disposal, these works constitute a major contribution to the broader discussion of the relation between the religious and political spheres.

This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old Master and Other Political Essays Why has no one ever written on the art of academic lecturing and its many notable triumphs? In some quarters new educational canons have spoken an em phatic condemnation of the college lect ure, and it would seem to be high time to consider its value, as illustrative of an art about to be lost, if not as exemplary of forces to be retained, even if modified. Are not our college class-rooms, in being robbed of the Old-time lecture, and getting instead a science-brief of data and bibliog raphy, being deprived also of that literary atmosphere which once pervaded them? I've are unquestionably gaining in thor oughness; but are we gaining in thought fulness? We are giving to many youths an insight, it may be profound, into spe cialties; but are we giving any of them a broad outlook? This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Political, Social, and Religious If, as is generally felt, England is at present without any definite foreign policy, drifting onwards under the dictation of circumstances, without any real prevision, the time is not ill chosen for speaking. If any one has convictions, it is as well he should state them. All that can be required of such an one is, that he should give the only guarantee a private Citizen can give - that he shall refuse to shelter himself in an anonymous publication. He should be ready, by giving his name, to meet any ridicule or odium that may attach to his views. I have abstained from any quotations in support of my positions. Such quotations would have shown how little original they are; at the same time, they might have lent them weight. But it seemed an object not to increase the size of the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Scientific Study of Politics Again in his treatment of communications, 3 subject that bulks large in the science of administration, Simon argues that effective communication is necessary if the organization is to accomplish what it sets out to do. The communications system in an organization appears no less vital than the nervous system in a human body - and the consequences of its imperfections no less disorganizing (public Administration, p. But why does it matter in any fundamental way if an organization is disorganized? Disorganization is likely to be an advantage to some participants, a disadvantage to others, and a matter of indifference to still others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Literary Essays: 1908-1913 I have to thank the editors of The Edinburgh and Quarterly Reviews, The Nineteenth Century and After., and The Spectator for allowing the republication of these essays, all of which appeared originally in their respective columns. No important alterations or additions have been made, but I should like to observe, as regards the first essay of the series - on "The Government of Subject Races" - that, although only six years have elapsed since it was written, events in India have moved rapidly during that short period. I adhere to the opinions expressed in that essay so far as they go, but it will be obvious to any one who has paid attention to Indian affairs that, if the subject had to be treated now, many very important issues, to which I have not alluded, would have to be imported into the discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Upon History and Politics The author of these Essays has not republished them because he believes that they are distinguished by any such peculiar merits as to place them above the average standard of periodical literature; but because, owing to causes which it would be tedious to explain, the periodical Essay has en croached upon the province of original authorship to such an extent, that the republication of articles contributed to reviews and newspapers is the only way open to many writers of coming before the public at all, or of testing the value of their own ideas by submitting them to the only kind of scrutiny which can be considered really effective.
