Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Literature and Ethics The following pages consist of selections from the literary remains of the late Rev. William Anderson o'conor, and are fairly representative of his intellectual powers Whilst not exhaustive of the material placed at the disposal of the editor. Should the present volume be received With favour, there are sufficient uncollected papers to form a second series. The volume owes its inception to the desire on the part of the members of the Manchester Literary Club and other ad miters of Mr. O'conor to have some permanent memorial of his powers as a critic. Most of the essays now republished were in the first instance read before the Club. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Ethics The following essays, as the headings tell, were for the most part delivered as lectures. Naturally some, if not all, were denounced by some who heard them as essayish and I hereby own the justice of the imputation. It is difficult to make abstract ethics actual, and no less so to keep applied ethics free of priggishness. Something went wrong, perhaps, when the term ethics \was generally substituted for morals. Given the drawbacks, however, certain problems have to be discussed and the ensuing pleas seemed to me to need to be put. Perhaps the case that now least needs urging is that put in the essay on The Ethics of Vivi Section, in part a criticism of positions which I believe are now abandoned by most, if not all, of the Opponents of cruel experiments upon animals. But the analysis there undertaken is in itself, I hope, not useless; and in a Postscript I have sought to indicate what I consider the sound line of resistance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Moral and Literary, Vol. 2 of 2 The belt method of extrac'tin a epitomizing, is to exprefs the author's ideas, a ter mttinghjs book, in our own words. In this exercife, the memory is exerted, and the ftyle improved. We make what we write our own; we think, we are aftive, and we do not condemn ourfelves to an. Employment merely ma nual and mechanical. But, after all, whatever a few may fay, write, or think, it is certain, that the great elt fcholars were content with reading, without making either extracts or epitomes. They were fatisfied with what remained in their minds after a diligent perufal, and when they wrote, they wrote their own. Reading is, indeed, molt juflly called the food of the \mind. Like food, it mull; be dige ed and a imulated it mull thew its nutritive power by promoting growth and fireh th, and by enabling the mind to bring forth founf and vigorous produftiousr It mu be converted in fucczzm ez' fanguz'zzem, 1nt03u1ce and blood, and not make its appearance again in the form in which it was originally imbibed. It is indeed true, and the ih fiance may be brought in oppolition to my doerine, that Demofthenes tranfcribed Thucydides eight times with his own hand; but it {hould be' remembered, that Demo henes ourifhed before printing was difcovered, and that he was induced to tranfcribe Thucydides, not only for the fake of improvement, but alfo for the fake of multiplying copies of a favourite author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Jurisprudence and Ethics The substance of the following Essays has appeared in divers journals and reviews in the course of the last seven years. My first duty is to return my best thanks to the proprietors and editors of those publica tions for the consent they have freely given to the present reproduction. Some additions and rearrange ments have been made, and a few passages have been worked in from articles on kindred subjects which for one or another reason did not seem worth reprinting separately. No unity of design will be expected in a work thus composed of occasional pieces; but I hope that so much unity of purpose and ideas may nevertheless be found in it as will give it a certain measure of coherence. The essays fall into two divisions, in the first of which legal topics predominate, in the second ethical. In' the first it has been my aim to consider legal ideas and institutions as affected by or affecting the wider interests of history, politics, and practical legislation. In the second I have endeavoured to bring to a better defined issue certain points of ethi cal discussion by the help of distinctions founded on familiar legal conceptions, and by specifically applying those conceptions and distinctions to admitted facts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Literary, Moral and Political Some people are subject to a certain delicacy of passion, which makes them extremely sensible to all the accidents of life, and gives them a lively joy upon every prosperous event, as well as a piercing grief, when they meet with misfortunes and adversity. Favours and good offices easily engage their friendship while the smallest injury provokes their resentment. Any honour or mark of distinction elevates them above measure; but they are as sensibly touched with contempt. People of this character have, no doubt, more lively enjoyments, as well as more pungent sorrows, than men of cool and sedate tempers but, I believe, when everything is balanced, there is no one, who would not rather be of the latter character, were he entirely master of his own disposition. Good or ill fortune Is very little at our disposal: and when a pe_r_son. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The scholar may lose himself in schools, in words, and become a pedant; but when he comprehends his duties, he above all men is a realist, and con verses with things. For the scholar is the student of the world; and of what worth the world is, and with what emphasis it accosts the soul of man, such is the worth, such the call of the scholar. The want of the times and the propriety of this anniversary concur to draw attention to the doctrine of Literary Ethics. What I have to say on that doc trine distributes itself under the topics of the re sources, the subject, and the discipline of the scholar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Moral, Political, and Literary, Vol. 1 of 2 Most of the principles, and reasonings, contained in this volume, were published in a work in three volumes, called A Treatise of Human Nature A work which the Author had projected before he left College, and which he wrote and published not long after. But not finding it successful, he was sensible of his error in going to the press too early, and he cast the whole anew in the following pieces, where some negligences in his former reasoning and more in the expres sion, are, he hopes, corrected. Yet several writers, who have honoured the Author's Philosophy with answers, have taken care to direct all their batteries against the juvenile work, which the Author never acknowledged, and have affected to triumph in any advantages, which, they imagined, they had obtained over it: A practice very contrary to all rules of candour and fair-dealing, and a strong instance of those polemical artifices, which a bigotted zeal thinks itself author ised to employ. Henceforth, the Author desires, that the following Pieces may alone be regarded as containing his philosophical sentiments and principles.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Morality of Woman: And Other Essays The customary objection to this tenet is that those who propose it forget all other ethical duties and legitimate feelings in order to make the sex relationship the center of existence, and love the sole decisive point of view in questions con cerning this relationship. But if we except the struggle for existence which indeed must be called not a relationship of life but a condition of life what then can be more central for man, than a condi tion decreed by the laws of earthly life the cause of his own origin? Can one imagine a moment which penetrates more deeply his whole being? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Ethics: A Collection of Addresses and Essays Along with these addresses I have included four papers, having, either in whole or in part, similarly practical aims. Two of these, on Public Morality and Clerical Veracity, and part of a third, on the Pursuit of Culture, are published here for the first time. I have placed each of the three either before or after the address that appeared most cognate in subject. The connection is closest in the case of the paper on Clerical Veracity; which is, in fact, a fuller exposition - called forth by contro versy - Of my views on a portion of the subject of the address that precedes it. The last paper in the volume - on Unreasonable Action - I have not included without some hesitation, as it was written primarily from a psychological rather than a practical point of view: but on the whole it appeared to me to have sufi'icient ethical interest to justify its inclusion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy and Life: And Other Essays Ethics and Social Philosophy in London, the most common Objection that the promoters had to meet was this - that a School of Philosophy had no definite relation to life. Ethical Societies, it was said, meet a practical demand. The School of Economics, the analogy of which suggested a School of Ethical Philosophy, also appealed to certain definite classes to bank clerks, Government officials, and to the great business world generally; above all, it appeals to social and political reformers. But it did not seem so obvious that the subjects we proposed to deal with here had any similar clientele to draw upon. King, Senior Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, translated the six Theosophi cal Essays of the Moralia, forming a volume in Bohu's Classical Library. The present volume consists of the twenty-six Ethical Essays, which are, in my opinion, the cream of the Moralia, and constitute a highly interesting series of treatises on what might be called The Ethics of the Hearth and Home. I have grouped these Essays in such a manner as to enable the reader to read together such as touch on the same or on kindred subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Human Nature: Essays (Partly Posthumous) In Ethics and Politics The following essays are drawn from the chapters entitled Zur Ethik and Zur Rechtslehre und Politik which are to be found both in Schopenhauer's Parerga and in his posthumous writings. As in my previous volumes, so also in this, I have omitted a few passages which appeared to me to be either antiquated or no longer of any general interest. For convenience' sake I have divided the original chapters into sections, which I have had to name; and I have also had to invent a title which should express their real scope. The reader will find that it is not so much Ethics and Politics that are here treated, as human nature itself in various aspects.
