Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Librarianship and Bibliography Recent exploit of the Newbery Library at Chicago, referred to in a note at page 86, which has turned the bewildering multitude of the accession parts of the British Museum Catalogue into a single alphabetical series by simply photographing the titles singly, and then combining the copies in a catalogue. It is quite possible that the enterprise may prove financially unremunerative, but this would not be the case if it had been executed as a portion of the work of a national institution con trolled by the State, which on its part would have been recouped, or nearly so, by the patronage of private customers. It is only necessary to add that the State should on no account seek to make a profit out of photography, and that all transactions between the Museum or any other public depart ment and the nation, where money is concerned, should be conducted on the principle of afford ing the greatest possible public advantage at the smallest possible cost. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andr Cossette's Humanism and Libraries is a concise but rigorous investigation into the foundations of librarianship-its definition and its aims. Philosophical and logical in its approach, it is intended to provide solid ground and unity for professional practice. Though the work was originally published in French in 1976 in Quebec by ASTED, Library Juice Press has found it to have enduring relevance and value, and has therefore made this English translation. The book includes a preface that makes the case for reading a work from the 1970s on library philosophy, and a set of "questions for reflection" following the text.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essay on Bibliography, and on the Attainments of a Librarian: By Parent, the Elder Not the least curious thing connected with this essay is, that it includes a separate scheme for divid ing literary history into fourteen great epochs, each of them connected with a predominating name. Its own epoch is sufficiently marked by the last three of these: 12th Epoch: Voltaire sketching on the walls of the Bastille the rough draft of the Henri ade. 13th Epoch: Voltaire crowned at Paris. 14th Epoch: Bonaparte, the friend of the arts and of learning, consolidating the French Republic, and giving peace to Europe.' In other words, Parent introduced what librarians call a time division, hifalutin and sentimental, if you will, but not so unlike the fundamental princi ples which guided the modifiers of Bacon's scheme, wherein all human knowledge is regarded as issuing from three sources, - Memory, Imagination, and Reason. He added a human note characteristic of his day and generation, when all hearts were aflame for philosophic research, and the maxims of the Encyclopedists were watchwords which lived, des pite the hostility of conservative censors and timid printers. We may see their influence, shom of all the personal note and the enthusiasm which marked their birth, in the systems of classifications in use today. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the current library literature assumes that professional library service is necessarily neutral-detached from the librarian's philosophical or religious views. By contrast, contributors to this collection assert that librarianship is best practiced as an outworking of spiritual conviction. Accordingly, they discuss principles for integrating Christian faith and librarianship within various contexts, and reflect on professional issues from biblical and theological perspectives. This text will prove beneficial to Christians working in all types of libraries, whether religious or secular. This compilation of 16 essays is divided into two main parts, the first on theory and the second on practice. The first part includes chapters such as A Rationale for Integrating Christian Faith and Librarianship, The Master We Serve: The Call of the Christian Librarian to the Secular Workplace; and The Impact of the Christian Faith on Library Service. Chapters in the second part include Library Encounters Culture, A Christian Approach to Intellectual Freedom in Libraries and Keeping Sunday Special in the Contemporary Workplace Culture. Contributors include William Fraher Abernathy, Rod Badams, Donald G. Davis, Jr., John Allen Delivuk, Kenneth D. Gill, Graham Hedges, D. Elizabeth Irish, James R. Johnson, Roger W. Phillips, Gregory A. Smith, Stanford Terhune, John B. Trotti, John Mark Tucker and Geoff Warren.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questioning Library Neutrality: Essays from Progressive Librarian presents essays that relate to neutrality in librarianship in a philosophical or practical sense, and sometimes both. They are a selection of essays originally published in Progressive Librarian, the journal of the Progressive Librarians Guild, presented in the chronological order of their appearance there. These essays, some by academics and some by passionate practitioners, offer a set of critiques of the notion of neutrality as it governs professional activity, focusing on the importance of meaningful engagement in the social sphere.
