Book excerpt: The essays gathered here provide a panoramic view of current thinking on biblical texts that play important roles in contemporary struggles for social justice – either as inspiration or impediment. Here, from the hands of an ecumenical array of leading biblical scholars, are fresh and compelling resources for thinking biblically about what justice is and what it demands. Individual essays treat key debates, themes, and texts, locating each within its historical and cultural settings while also linking them to the most pressing justice concerns of the twenty-first century. The volume aims to challenge academic and ecclesiastical complacency and highlight key avenues for future scholarship and action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional Catholic Reflections is a collection of timely essays by the editor of the popular Catholic E-Zine: TCRNews.com. In this collection Stephen Hand takes a critical look at the prevailing trends and movements in theology and culture today, from Neo-Modernism to Secularism to Integrism. Whether the subject is liturgy, the culture of life vs. a culture of death, or social justice, Hand shows how it is the Church’s proclamation alone that can heal our deepest wounds and rescue us from the hopelessness that imbues so much of the thought of our time.

Book excerpt: "Justice, as well as Mercy, is an attribute to God Himself, and His Church is its Dispenser... And if Justice, then Social Justice." So begins Harold Robbins' essay on Catholic Social Teaching. With clarity and erudition Robbins draws from various sources in the Christian tradition to distill his principles, principles which were to serve as the foundation for the school of economic thought known as Distributism. The success of his effort was affirmed by none other than Dorothy Day, who claimed that The Sun of Justice "contains the best thinking ever done on Distributism." Originally published in 1938, this edition represents an effort to restore this long-lost treasure to contemporary audiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent emphasis on the social matrix out of which the early church's documents arose marks a notable turn in the path of contemporary New Testament studies. Although the terms, goals, and procedures of scholars vary considerably, there is widespread agreement that much of the interesting and innovative work in the field is that of Gerd Theissen. Four of his most formidable and sustained contributions treat Paul's correspondence with the Christian community at Corinth. Together these four essays provide a composite picture of the social stratification at this ancient urban center and of the concrete organizational and ethical problems that that stratification engendered for the Christians' common life. A fifth essay helps to focus the critical questions of methodology that arise whenever one approaches ancient religious texts for information on issues which to the texts themselves are of peripheral concern. A lucid introduction by the translator and a helpful bibliography of the author's major writings round out this significant exploration and interpretation of the social world of early Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Barth was the master theologian of our age. Whenever men in the past generation have reflected deeply on the ultimate problems of life and faith, they have done so in a way that bears the mark of the intellectual revolution let loose by this Swiss thinker. But his life was not simply one of quiet reflection and scholarship. He was obliged to do his thinking and writing in one of the stormiest periods of history, and he always attempted to speak to the problems and concerns of the time. In June 1933 he emerged as the theologian of the Confessional movement, which was attempting to preserve the integrity of the Evangelical Church in Germany against corruption from within and terror from without. His leadership in this struggle against Nazism also made it necessary for him to say something about the totalitarianism that the Soviet power was clamping down upon a large part of Europe. In this indirect way, a Barthian social philosophy emerged, and this theologian, who abjured apologetics and desired nothing but to expound the Word of God, was compelled by circumstances to propound views on society and the state that make him one of the most influential social thinkers of our time. David Haddorff is Associate Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at St. John's University, New York. He is the author of several articles and reviews, and the book: Dependence and Freedom: The Moral Thought of Horace Bushnell (1994).
