Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays for the Times on Ecclesiastical and Social Subjects I send forth this volume with some hope that 1 may assist in bringing Christian thinkers to an agree ment on some of the pressing questions of the day. Whatever may be the worth of the papers here bound together, there can be no doubt as to the importance of the subjects with which they deal. Apart from purely dogmatic or specifically religious questions, and from strictly political controversies, it will be con ceded that the subjects handled in this volume include most of those which are recognised as of primary and pressing moment at the present time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Reviews, and Addresses: Ecclesiastical, Historical The following papers differ from the T heological and Philosophical Essays reserved for the next Volume, not so much in their main subject, as in their mode of treating it. In dealing with a religious problem, they address them selves, not to its theoretic essence, but to its practical bearings on human life in historic schools and organized Churches. Called forth for the most part by some social event, like The Papal Aggression, or some special pub lication, like an Oxford Tract, now half - forgotten, they might seem to be without excuse for their reappearance were it not that, for the right appreciation of transient phenomena, appeal must often be made to critical prin ciples far from transient. I have given nothing a place in these pages without first satisfying myself that its mode of reasoning and rules of moral judgment are available, mm'atz's mutana'z's, no less for the determination of still pending questions, than for a right verdict on the parties and controversies of the past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and Socialism: And Other Essays This volume is a reprint of papers that have appeared in various publications during the past ten years. The opening chapter comprises four articles originally published in The New York Evening Mail in February and March, 1918; the second and fourth have been circulated in pamphlet form, respectively, by the Paulist Press and the Central Bureau of the Central Verein; the third was written for the Catholic Press Association and published by its constituent journals, and each of the others appeared in one of the following periodicals: The American Catholic Quarterly Review, The Catholic World, The International Journal of Ethics, The Catholic Charities Review, and America. Acknowl edgment is hereby gratefully made of the permission granted by the original publishers to reprint the papers in their present form. Although the productions embodied in this book were written at different times and on different sub jects, it is hoped that they will be found not entirely unrelated to one another. The first six deal with important phases of the industrial problem, while the last four treat of social questions which have important industrial aspects. Upon the advice of friends the attempt is made to rescue them all from a too speedy oblivion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Ecclesiastical Biography In these circumstances I have had to make my choice between publishing an enlarged and corrected edition of those papers, or continuing to appear, to such persons in the United States as are readers of such books, the author of a volume replete With defects and errors. Some of those faults are the result of the mere want of learning and ability to do better and are therefore incorrigible. But some of them are the result of the haste With Which our periodical works are got up by most of the writers of them, and especially by those Who, like myself have been compelled to write in the very scanty leisure of a life of almost ceaseless labour. Such faults are corrigible; and I trust that, in the following volumes, they are corrected. I am thus an author in my own defence. I prefix these few words to these volumes, not to deprecate criticism, Which is always a vain and is not always a sincere attempt, but in order to explain that such censures as may justly be due to what I have written, have not been provoked by any inordinate solicitude of mine to appear before the world in my own person as the writer of a book, nor by any Wish to assume to myself the character of a teacher on the sacred topics to Which so large a part of this book is devoted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ, the Church, and Man: An Essay on New Methods in Ecclesiastical Studies Worship With Some Remarks on a New Apologia for Christianity in Relation to the Social Question And what are we to say of our own times? In these days, although consolations are not wanting to her, the Church, nevertheless, groans under the weight of many sorrows, all due to one evil which has never, here tofore, been so prevalent in Christendom. This is the evil of misbelief, and, at its worst, a misbelief which is at once sceptical, cultured and proud. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Essays on Church and Religion The present volume closes the series of my attempts to deal directly with questions concerning religion and the Church. Indirectly such questions must often, in all serious literary work, present themselves; but in this volume I make them my direct object for the last time. Assuredly it was not for my own pleasure that I entered upon them at first, and it is with anything but reluctance that I now part from them. Neither can I be ignorant what offence my handling of them has given to many whose good-will I value, and with what relief they will learn that the handling is now to cease. Personal considerations, however, ought not in a matter like this to bear sway; and they have not, in fact, determined me to bring to an end the work which I had been pursuing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Vol. 2: Critical and Historical In his recent work on the Apostolic Succession and the English Orders, Mr. Perceval has done us a service, which was very much needed, and had never been attempted. Many living writers have treated of the Apostolical Succession as well as he; but no one but he has had the opportunity, and been at the pains, of exhibiting to the general reader the evidence of the fact of the Succession in the English Church. We are referring to the elaborate Appendix to his Volume, in which he has brought together a great number of documents and tables illustrative of some of the more important points in the history of the spiritual descent of our existing bishops and clergy from the Apostles. He begins by enumerating the chief objections which the Roman Catholics have urged against our Succession, as passing through Archbishop Parker and his colleagues, and he lays before us some chief portions of the evidence in its favour, presenting us with the records of Parker's consecration as contained in the registers at Lambeth and in the library of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and with the offices for consecration and ordination, according to the Antenicene, Eastern, Ancient Western, Coptic, and Queen Elizabeth's Ritual. The literary and social club or the first congregational church may lay claims to unique character and original conduct that entitles it to be the worthy theme of the pen of Clio. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion in History and in Modern Life: Together With an Essay on the Church and the Working Classes Make knowledge of the one subject a reason for attempting to write on both, is simply to show how foolish a reasonable man may be, for it is nowhere so hard to think truly and speak wisely as in the application of simple maxims to complex problems. This, of course, does not mean either that the ethics of Christ ought not, or that they cannot be applied to modern economics; on the contrary, the whole argument of the book is governed by the conviction that they ought to be so applied, and that the whole past life of the Christian Religion has been a series of efforts to embody itself in a higher social and economical order. From these efforts the religion cannot desist, and against the hindrances to them it must for evermore contend. But then in order to the success of this contention the churches must see clearly that they may strike boldly; to hit blindly is only to inflict damage all round. The first four essays deal with Church and State in history; the fifth is a bridge of transition to the theory and politics of the modern state, which are treated in the three subsequent essays; The nineth is another bridge of transition, from history and politics to education; and the last three are concerned with different phases of that subject, in the university, the school and the area of adult education. All the essays may be said, in a word, to deal with the history or theory of society. This is an interesting historical reference work for students of politics and religion.
