But eon Sists chiefly in a certain superficial distortion or reversal of objects, and ends at best iii laughter. Bears no resemblance to the humour of Richter. A shallow endowment this; and often more a habit than an endowment. It is but a poor fraction of humour; or rather. It is the body to which the soul is wanting; any life it has being false. Artificial, and irrational. True humour springs not more from the head than from the heart; it is not contempt, its e'sence is love; it issues not in laughter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays: Collected and Republished; Vols. I. And II Of his Life of Richter these preliminary observations may be our excuse for saying but little. He brags much, in his Preface, that it is all true and genuine; for Richter's widow, it seems, had, by public advertisement, cautioned the world against it; another biography, partly by the illustrious de ceased himself, partly by Otto, his oldest friend and the appointed Editor of his Works, being actually in preparation. This rouses the indignant Spirit of Doring, and he stoutly asseverates that, his documents being altogether authentic, this biography is no pseudo-biography. With still greater truth he might have asseverated that it was no biography at all. Well are he and Hennings Of Gotha aware thatthis thing of shreds and patches has been vamped together for sale only. Except a few letters to Kunz, the Bamberg Bookseller, which turn mainly on the purchase of spectacles, and the jour neyings and freightage of two boxes that used to pass and repass between Richter and Kunz's circulating library; with three or four notes of Similar importance, and chiefly to other booksellers, there are no biographical documents here, which were not Open to all Europe as well as to Heinrich Doring. Indeed, very nearly one half of the Life is occupied with a description of the funeral and its appendages - how the sixty torches, with a number of lanterns and pitchpans, were arranged; how this Patrician or Professor followed that, through Friedrich Street, Chancery Street, and other streets of Bayreuth; and how at last the torches all went out, as Dr. Gabler and Dr. Spatzier were perorating (decidedly in bom bast) over the grave. Then, it seems, there were meetings held in various parts of Germany, to solemnize the memory of Richter; among the rest, one in the Museum of Frankfort-ou Mayn; where a Doctor Berne speaks another long Speech, if possible in still more decided bombast. Next come threnodies from all the four winds, mostly on very Splay-footed metre. The whole of which is here snatched from the kind oblivion of the newspapers, and lives in Settle's numbers one day more. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 4 of 5 Thiers's History, in ten volumes foolscap-octavo, contains, if we remember rightly, one reference; and that to a book, not to the page or chapter of a book. It has, for these last seven or eight years, a wide or even high reputation; which latter it is as far as possible from meriting. A superficial air of order, of clearness, calm candour, is spread over the work; but inwardly, it is waste, inorganic; no human head that honestly tries can conceive the French Revolution 90. A critic of our acquaintance undertook, by way of bet, to find four errors per hour in Thiers: he won amply on the first trial or two.1 And yet readers (we must add), taking all this along with them, may peruse Thiers with comfort in certain circumstances, nay, even with profit; for he is a brisk man of his sort; and does tell you much, if you knew nothing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical and Critical Miscellanies The subject of the present memoir affords an almost solitary example, at this period, of a. Scholar, in the enlarged ap lication of the term, who cultivated letters as a distinct and exclusive profession, resting his means of support, as well as his fame, on h1s success; and who, as a writer of fiction, is still farther entitled to credit for having quitted the beaten grounds of the Old Country, and sought his subjects in the untried wilderness of his own. The particulars of his unostentatious life have been collected with suffi cient industry by his friend, Mr. William Dunlap, to whom our native literature is under such large obligations for the extent and fidelity of his re searches. We will select a few of the most prom inent incidents from a mass of miscellaneous fragments and literary lumber with which his work is somewhat encumbered. It were to be wished that, in the place of some of them, more cupious extracts had been substituted for his journal and correspondence, which, doubtless, in this as in other cases, must afford the most interesting, as well as an thcntic materials for biography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical Essays and Literary Fragments: With an Introduction The Essay of Dramatic Poesy may be said to make an era in the history of English criticism, and to mark an era in the history of English prose composition. It was incomparably the best purely critical treatise which had hitherto appeared in our language, both synthetically in its definition and application of principles, and particularly in its lucid, exact, 'and purely discriminating analysis. It was also the most striking and successful illustration of what may be called the new prose style, or that style which, initiated by Hobbes and developed by Sprat, Cowley, and Denham1 blended the ease and plasticity of colloquy with the solidity and dignity of rhetoric, of that style in which Dryden was soon to become a consummate master. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Out of the Past, Vol. 1 of 2: Some Biographical Essays If I were engaged in estimating his character, it would be necessary to linger on this disagreeable subject, and to inquire what weight ought to be given to it in balancing his faults against his virtues. I cannot, however, make it too clear that I am not engaged in estimating his character. That was done very well, more than a generation ago, by the late Lord Stanhope in his History, and by Mr Hayward in an Essay, which has been reprinted. My object is, as I have said, a purely practical one to examine, namely, how far his Letters to Ms Son can be made useful at the present day, and it fortunately happens that all his bad morality may, for that particular purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Biography 'so they two came along to England together, ' and it was not long before they found at Court a theatre worthy their design. Nor could any twain be better fitted to play there a foremost part. The talent of the one marvellously supplemented the enterprise of the other. Carr was endowed with the very genius of success. He was born for pro sperity and advancement. He had been bred in France, and had there learned those tricks of manner and address which win the favour of kings and ministers. None possessed in larger measure than he the tact of presentation. His handsome face and Stately figure were embellished by the natural grace of his movements. He understood the niceties of ruffs and frills. He showed an equal taste in the cut of his doublet and in the colour of his hose. In brief, he was master of all those qualities which should easily endear him to the wisest fool in Christendom. His deficiencies, cunningly disguised, were as conspicuous as his gifts. He had as little talent for affairs as for scholarship. In any other Court, save that of James, he would have remained a mere gentleman of the household, and done his best to still the voices of ambition and avarice.
