Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Correspondence, Vol. 2: Chiefly on Scriptural Subjects Yet, while we thus own ourselves bound to act as quiet and sub missive subjects of any government, under which the providence of god may place us, we are by no means insensible to the many peculiar claims upon our grateful attachment, which bind us to the government of this favoured land. We reckon it one of them, that we can from time to time make such a temperate appeal to the Legislature, as the present, for obtaining relief from any hardships under which we lie: and that we are encouraged to look for that relief by the fact, that others have long ago Obtained it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study details the compatibility of ideas between Jonathan Edwards and Emanuel Swedenborg that helped forge the theological socialism of Henry James Sr. Duban demonstrates how a forgotten newspaper exchange between the elder James and Unitarian minister Henry Whitney Bellows clarified the Puritan foundations of the elder James's philosophy. Henry James Jr., in turn, transformed the phenomenalistic and Edwardsian foundations of his father's philosophy into the psychological dramas of major novels, although deeming the father's political radicalism destructive of aesthetic valuation.
Book Synopsis The Doctrines of Grace in an Unexpected Place by : Mark R. Stevenson

This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God sovereignly elect some individuals for salvation while passing others by? Do human beings possess free will to embrace or reject the gospel? Did Christ die equally for all people or only for some? These questions have long been debated in the history of the Christian church. Answers typically fall into one of two main categories, popularly known as Calvinism and Arminianism. The focus of this book is to establish how one nineteenth-century evangelical group, the Brethren, responded to these and other related questions. The Brethren produced a number of colorful leaders whose influence was felt throughout the evangelical world. Although many critics have assumed the movement's theology was Arminian, this book argues that the Brethren, with few exceptions, advocated Calvinistic positions. Yet there were some twists along the way! The movement's radical biblicism, passionate evangelism, and strong aversion to systematic theology and creeds meant they refused to label themselves as Calvinists even though they affirmed Calvinism's soteriological principles--the so-called doctrines of grace.
