Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays in Religion and Morality brings together a dozen papers of varying length to these two themes so crucial to the life and thought of William James. Reflections on the two subjects permeate, first, James's presentation of his father's Literary Remains; second, his writings on human immortality and the relation between reason and faith; third, his two memorial pieces, one on Robert Gould Shaw and the other on Emerson; fourth, his consideration of the energies and powers of human life; and last, his writings on the possibilities of peace, especially as found in his famous essay "The Moral Equivalent of War." These speeches and essays were written over a period of twenty-four years. The fact that James did not collect and publish them himself in a single volume does not reflect on their intrinsic worth or on their importance in James's philosophical work, since they include some of the best known and most influential of his writings. All the essays, throughout their varied subject matter, are consistently and characteristically Jamesian in the freshness of their attack on the problems and failings of humankind and in their steady faith in human powers.

NATURE "VTATURE, natural, and the group of words derived from them, or allied to them in etymology, have at all times filled a great place in the thoughts and taken a strong hold on the feelings of mankind. That they should have done so is not surprising, when we consider what the words, in their primitive and most obvious signification, represent; but it is unfortunate that a set of terms which play so great a part in moral and metaphysical speculation, should have acquired many meanings different from the primary one, yet sufficiently allied to it to admit of confusion. The words have thus become entangled in so many foreign associations, mostly of a very powerful and tenacious character, that they have come to excite, and to be the symbols of, feelings which their original meaning will by no means justify; and which have made them one of the most copious sources of false taste, false philosophy, false morality, and even bad law. B The most important application of the Socratic Elenchus, as exhibited and improved by Plato, consists in dissecting large abstractions of this description; fixing down to a precise definition the meaning which as popularly used they merely shadow forth, and questioning and testing the common maxims and opinions in which they bear a part. It is to be regretted that among the instructive specimens of this kind of investigation which Plato has left, and to which subsequent times have been so much indebted for whatever intellectual clearness they have attained, he has not enriched posterity with a dialogue Trcpl Qvgzwq. If the idea denoted by the word had been subjected to his searching analysis, and the popular commonplaces in which it figures had been submitted to the ordeal of his powerful dialectics, his...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Philosophy of Josiah Royce: Edited, With an Introductory EssayRoyce was a clear, if somewhat laborious writer. His religious writ ings are lucid enough. But their essential continuity, as selected in this volume, may perhaps be illumined by some consideration of the two major theoretical formulations, one early and the other late, which underlay their progression. These are his arguments for the Absolute and his theory of a community of interpretation. The former is the matic in all his work from his first book, through The World and the Individual, to The Philosophy of Loyalty, while the latter gives a some what different character to The Problem of Christianity and The Hope of the Great Community. As both james and Santayana early pointed out, and Royce himself readily confessed, his argument for the Absolute was a distinctive varia tion on the medieval ontological formulation. The distinction lay in his emphasis on thought. While the ontological proof had been intended simply to demonstrate the existence of an unlimited being, which could then be equated with the God of Christianity, Royce wished to show that the Absolute Being was a mind, or better, Mind itself. And so he worked out his argument in terms of judgments rather than comparisons.Starting with simple judgments, Royce argued that none could be true unless some were false. Error must be possible. At any rate no one would deny the proposition. But if errors occur, how do we know them? In practical situations we appeal to witnesses, chosen because they are believed to have better perspective. Thus if John and Thomas disagree, William is appealed to for arbitration. However, William's judgment may also be erroneous, so that it is necessary to appeal further. The process of appeal continues. Indeed, so long as error remains possible, it must continue until a mind is found which Views simultaneously from all perspectives, and so, actually, contains all judgments. Such a mind would be without limit and therefore absolute. Its judgment would be final truth. Finite minds are seen to be minds at all only by their relation to Infinite Mind. The rejection of this argument, Royce maintained, involves the assumption that error is not possible, which is manifestly absurd.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Modern American Philosophers includes both academic and non-academic philosophers, anda large number of female and minority thinkers whose work has been neglected. It includes those intellectualsinvolved in the development of psychology, pedagogy, sociology, anthropology, education, theology, politicalscience, and several other fields, before these disciplines came to be considered distinct from philosophy in thelate nineteenth century. Each entry contains a short biography of the writer, an exposition and analysis of his or her doctrines and ideas, abibliography of writings, and suggestions for further reading. While all the major post-Civil War philosophers arepresent, the most valuable feature of this dictionary is its coverage of a huge range of less well-known writers, including hundreds of presently obscure thinkers. In many cases, the Dictionary of Modern AmericanPhilosophers offers the first scholarly treatment of the life and work of certain writers. This book will be anindispensable reference work for scholars working on almost any aspect of modern American thought.
