Book Synopsis Rousseau and Hobbes by : Robin Douglass
Download or read book Rousseau and Hobbes written by Robin Douglass and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-02-12 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robin Douglass presents the first comprehensive study of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's engagement with Thomas Hobbes. He reconstructs the intellectual context of this engagement to reveal the deeply polemical character of Rousseau's critique of Hobbes and to show how Rousseau sought to expose that much modern natural law and doux commerce theory was, despite its protestations to the contrary, indebted to a Hobbesian account of human nature and the origins of society. Throughout the book Douglass explores the reasons why Rousseau both followed and departed from Hobbes in different places, while resisting the temptation to present him as either a straightforwardly Hobbesian or anti-Hobbesian thinker. On the one hand, Douglass reveals the extent to which Rousseau was occupied with problems of a fundamentally Hobbesian nature and the importance, to both thinkers, of appealing to the citizens' passions in order to secure political unity. On the other hand, Douglass argues that certain ideas at the heart of Rousseau's philosophy--free will and the natural goodness of man--were set out to distance him from positions associated with Hobbes. Douglass advances an original interpretation of Rousseau's political philosophy, emerging from this encounter with Hobbesian ideas, which focuses on the interrelated themes of nature, free will, and the passions. Douglass distances his interpretation from those who have read Rousseau as a proto-Kantian and instead argues that his vision of a well-ordered republic was based on cultivating man's naturally good passions to render the life of the virtuous citizen in accordance with nature.

Download or read book Natural Law Theories in the Early Enlightenment written by T. J. Hochstrasser and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-09-14 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major addition to Ideas in Context examines the development of natural law theories in the early stages of the Enlightenment in Germany and France. T. J. Hochstrasser investigates the influence exercised by theories of natural law from Grotius to Kant, with a comparative analysis of the important intellectual innovations in ethics and political philosophy of the time. Hochstrasser includes the writings of Samuel Pufendorf and his followers who evolved a natural law theory based on human sociability and reason, fostering a new methodology in German philosophy. This book assesses the first histories of political thought since ancient times, giving insights into the nature and influence of debate within eighteenth-century natural jurisprudence. Ambitious in range and conceptually sophisticated, Natural Law Theories in the Early Enlightenment will be of great interest to scholars in history, political thought, law and philosophy.

Book Synopsis Natural Law and the Origin of Political Economy by : Arild Saether
Download or read book Natural Law and the Origin of Political Economy written by Arild Saether and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Pufendorf’s work on natural law and political economy was extensive and has been cited by several important figures in the history of economic thought. Yet his name is rarely mentioned in textbooks on the history of economic thought, the history of political science or the history of philosophy. In this unprecedented study, Arild Sæther sheds new light both on Pufendorf’s own life and work, as well as his influence on his contemporaries and on later scholars. This book explores Pufendorf ’s doctrines of political economy and his work on natural law, which was translated into several major European languages. Natural Law and the Origin of Political Economy considers the influence he had on the writings on political economy of John Locke, Charles Montesquieu, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Francis Hutcheson and Adam Smith, amongst others. If Smith can be called the father of modern economics, this book claims that Pufendorf can be called the grandfather. This volume is of great importance to those who study Pufendorf ’s extensive works, as well as those interested in history of economic thought, political economy and political philosophy.

Book Synopsis Natural Law and Thomistic Juridical Realism by : Petar Popovic
Download or read book Natural Law and Thomistic Juridical Realism written by Petar Popovic and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2022-02-04 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a rather novel legal-philosophical approach to understanding the intersection between law and morality. It does so by analyzing the conditions for the existence of a juridical domain of natural law from the perspective of the tradition of Thomistic juridical realism. In order to highlight the need to reconnect with this tradition in the context of contemporary legal philosophy, the book presents various other recent jurisprudential positions regarding the overlap between law and morality. While most authors either exclude a conceptual necessity for the inclusion of moral principles in the nature of law or refer to the purely moral status of natural law at the foundations of the legal phenomenon, the book seeks to elucidate the essential properties of the juridical status of natural law. In order to establish the juridicity of natural law, the book explores the relevant arguments of Thomas Aquinas and some of his main commentators on this issue, above all Michel Villey and Javier Hervada. It establishes that Thomistic juridical realism observes the juridical phenomenon not only from the perspective of legal norms or subjective individual rights, but also from the perspective of the primary meaning of the concept of right (ius), namely, the just thing itself as the object of justice. In this perspective, natural rights already possess a fully juridical status and can be described as natural juridical goods. In addition, from the viewpoint of Thomistic juridical realism, we can identify certain natural norms or principles of justice as the juridical title of these rights or goods. The book includes an assessment of the prospective points of dialogue with the other trends in Thomistic legal philosophy as well as with various accounts of the nature of law in contemporary legal theory.

Book Synopsis War, Trade and Neutrality by : Antonella Alimento
Download or read book War, Trade and Neutrality written by Antonella Alimento and published by FrancoAngeli. This book was released on 2011 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the culmination of a research project funded by the University of Pisa's internationalisation support programme of 2008-10. The project's underlying idea is that the Mediterranean is of decisive importance for any investigation into the political and commercial relations between states of different size and constitutional structure in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It thus scrutinises the practices, institutions and cultural tendencies of the region's ruling classes, from those of the Italian small states to those of the great powers. Salerno, Edigati, Angiolini, Addobbati and Zamora examine the theme of the small state by focusing on the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and its foreign policy centred on the free port of Livorno and the principle of neutrality, while Herrero and Aglietti describe how diplomats from the Republic of Genoa, the Dutch Republic and the consuls of the Italian small states helped preserve the European balance of power. Since war was a catalyst for the internal reorganisation of states, the correlation of war, trade and neutrality as processes of emulation is investigated by Stapelbroek, Alimento and Calafat, while the reception and circulation of theoretical models is recounted by Trampus, Schnakenbourg and Spagnesi. The book is also enriched by the reflections of Guasti, Montorzi and Salvemini regarding the project's methodological structures and outcomes. --
