Book Synopsis Semantic Theories in Europe, 18301930 by : Brigitte Nerlich
Download or read book Semantic Theories in Europe, 18301930 written by Brigitte Nerlich and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1992-03-26 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely believed by historians of linguistics that the 19th-century was largely devoted to historical and comparative studies, with the main emphasis on the discovery of soundlaws. Syntax is typically portrayed as a mere sideline of these studies, while semantics is seldom even mentioned. If it comes into view at all, it is usually assumed to have been confined to diachronic lexical semantics and the construction of some (mostly ill-conceived) typologies of semantic change. This book aims to destroy some of these prejudices and to show that in Europe semantics was an important, although controversial, area at that time. Synchronic mechanisms of semantic change were discovered and increasing attention was paid to the context of the sentence, to the speech situation and the users of the language. From being a semantics of transformations', a child of the biological-geological paradigm of historical linguistics with its close links to etymology and lexicography, the field matured into a semantics of comprehension and communication, set within a general linguistics and closely related to the emerging fields of psychology and sociology.

Book Synopsis The Development of the Concept of SMELL in American English by : Daniela Pettersson-Traba
Download or read book The Development of the Concept of SMELL in American English written by Daniela Pettersson-Traba and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decades have witnessed a renewed interest in near-synonymy. In particular, recent distributional corpus-based approaches used for semantic analysis have successfully uncovered subtle distinctions in meaning between near-synonyms. However, most studies have dealt with the semantic structure of sets of near-synonyms from a synchronic perspective, while their diachronic evolution generally has been neglected. Against this backdrop, the aim of this book is to examine five adjectival near-synonyms in the history of American English from the understudied semantic domain of SMELL: fragrant, perfumed, scented, sweet-scented, and sweet-smelling. Their distribution is analyzed across a wide range of contexts, including semantic, morphosyntactic, and stylistic ones, since distributional patterns of this type serve as a proxy for semantic (dis)similarity. The data is submitted to various univariate and multivariate statistical techniques, making it possible to uncover fine-grained (dis)similarities among the near-synonyms, as well as possible changes in their prototypical structures. The book sheds valuable light on the diachronic development of lexical near-synonyms, a dimension that has up to now been relatively disregarded.
Book Synopsis The Lexical Typology of Semantic Shifts by : Päivi Juvonen
Download or read book The Lexical Typology of Semantic Shifts written by Päivi Juvonen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume focuses on semantic shifts and motivation patterns in the lexicon. Its key feature is its lexico-typological orientation, i.e. a heavy emphasis on systematic cross-linguistic comparison. The book presents current theoretical and methodological trends in the study of semantic shifts and motivational patters based on an abundance of empirical findings across genetically, areally and typologically diverse languages.
Download or read book Polysemy written by Brigitte Nerlich and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-05-12 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About fifty years ago, Stephen Ullmann wrote that polysemy is 'the pivot of semantic analysis'. Fifty years on, polysemy has become one of the hottest topics in linguistics and in the cognitive sciences at large. The book deals with the topic from a wide variety of viewpoints. The cognitive approach is supplemented and supported by diachronic, psycholinguistic, developmental, comparative, and computational perspectives. The chapters, written by some of the most eminent specialists in the field, are all underpinned by detailed discussions of methodology and theory.

Book Synopsis Rudolf Carnap: Studies in Semantics by : Steve Awodey
Download or read book Rudolf Carnap: Studies in Semantics written by Steve Awodey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains Carnap's Studies in Semantics, a series of three interlocking books: Introduction to Semantics (1942), Formalization of Logic (1942), and Meaning and Necessity (1947). They were extremely influential in their time, especially the third, and shaped the direction of analytic philosophy during the 1950s and 1960s. They constitute the background to a number of celebrated controversies of that period, especially those between Carnap and Quine. Most of the philosophical debates today in philosophical logic and the philosophy of language ultimately had their origins here. This new edition situates these works in their context, both within Carnap's philosophical development and within the philosophical debates they responded to and influenced. The editors' introduction explains how Carnap arrived at the project of semantics in the 1930s and how it developed into these three successive publications, how the three books fit together, and how the project developed and changed in the course of the 1940s. It also describes the reception of the books as they appeared, as well as Carnap's response. The editorial and textual notes give variant readings, Carnap's own marginal notes on these texts in his personal copies, and elucidatory commentary where Carnap's terminology or notation are no longer familiar. This will be an indispensable volume for anyone interested in the origins and preoccupations of present-day analytic philosophy, especially philosophical logic and philosophy of language.

Book Synopsis Signifying and Understanding by : Susan Petrilli
Download or read book Signifying and Understanding written by Susan Petrilli and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009 with total page 1069 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces and provides commentary on a selection of published and unpublished works by Victoria Welby and exponents of the Signific Movement in the Netherlands. Beyond offering an important contribution to the reconstruction of a neglected phase in the history of ideas, it evidences the theoretical topicality of significs, in particular the focus on the relation of signs to value, meaning, and understanding, on verbal and nonverbal behavior, and on language and communication.
