Book Synopsis The Latin Language by : Leonard Robert Palmer
Download or read book The Latin Language written by Leonard Robert Palmer and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent study traces the relation of Latin to other Indo-European languages and guides the reader lucidly through Latin phonology, morphology, and syntax. It should prove fascinating not only to Latinists but also to linguists generally and, expecially, to students of Romance languages. Over the years, readers have found that Palmer’s treatment of this so-called dead language reveals Latin’s continuing vitality and "soul."

Download or read book Early Latin written by J. N. Adams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the most detailed and comprehensive study to date of early Latin language, literary and non-literary, featuring twenty-nine chapters by an international team of scholars. 'Early Latin' is interpreted liberally as extending from the period of early inscriptions through to the first quarter of the first century BC. Classical Latin features significantly in the volume, although in a restricted sense. In the classical period there were writers who imitated the Latin of an earlier age, and there were also interpreters of early Latin. Later authors and views on early Latin language are also examined as some of these are relevant to the establishment of the text of earlier writers. A major aim of the book is to define linguistic features of different literary genres, and to address problems such as the limits of periodisation and the definition of the very concept of 'early Latin'.

Book Synopsis The Early Latin Verb System by : Wolfgang David Cirilo de Melo
Download or read book The Early Latin Verb System written by Wolfgang David Cirilo de Melo and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2007-09-27 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive treatment of Latin extra-paradigmatic verb forms, that is, verb forms which cannot easily be assigned to any particular tense in the Latin verbal system. In order to see what functions such forms fulfil, one has to compare their usage to that of the regular verb forms. In Part 1, Wolfgang de Melo outlines the usage of regular verb forms, which, surprisingly, has not always been described adequately in the standard grammars. In Part 2, the central partof the book, he compares the usage of the extra-paradigmatic verb forms to that of the regular ones, restricting himself to Archaic Latin (roughly before 100 BC); here he makes many new and unexpected discoveries. In Part 3, de Melo shows how synchronic usage can help us to reconstruct earlierstages of the language which are not attested; he also points out that, while most of the extra-paradigmatic forms die out after 100 BC, some survive - and that such survival is by no means a matter of chance.
Book Synopsis Language Change and Language Contact in Pidgins and Creoles by : John McWhorter
Download or read book Language Change and Language Contact in Pidgins and Creoles written by John McWhorter and published by John Benjamins Publishing. Book excerpt: This book collects a selection of fifteen papers presented at three meetings of the Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics in 1996 and 1997. The focus is on papers which approach issues in creole studies with novel perspectives, address understudied pidgin and creole varieties, or compellingly argue for controversial positions. The papers demonstrate how pidgins and creoles shed light on issues such as verb movement, contact-induced language change and its gradations, discourse management via tense-aspect particles, language genesis, substratal transfer, and Universal Grammar, and cover a wide range of contact languages, ranging from English- and French-based creoles through Portuguese creoles of Africa and Asia, Sango, Popular Brazilian Portuguese, West African Pidgin Englishes, and Hawaiian Creole English.
Book Synopsis Cicero, Catullus, and the Language of Social Performance by : Brian A. Krostenko
Download or read book Cicero, Catullus, and the Language of Social Performance written by Brian A. Krostenko and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-04-15 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Krostenko (classics, U. of Chicago) explores charm, wit, elegance, and style in Roman literature of the late Republic by tracking the origins, development, and use of the terms that described them, which he calls "the language of social performance." His sociolinguistic approach is to describe the relationship between the words themselves and the ideological categories they expressed. Included in his analysis are the growth of elite aestheticism, the Latin rhetorical tradition, performance in Cicero and Catullus, and the rise of Octavian and the death of the language of social performance.
