Download or read book Manifesto written by Mary Ann Caws and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first anthology of its kind, Manifesto features over two hundred artistic and cultural manifestos from a wide range of countries. The manifesto, a public statement that sets forth the tenets of a forthcoming, existing, or potential movement or "ism"?or that plays on the idea of one?became in various modernisms aøcrucial and forceful vehicle for artists, writers, and other intellectuals to express their ideas about the direction of aesthetics and society. Included in this collection are texts ranging from Kurt Schwitters's Cow Manifesto to those written in the name of well-known movements?imagism, cubism, surrealism, symbolism, vorticism, projectivism?and less well-known ones?lettrism, acmeism, concretism, rayonism. Also covered are expressionist, Dada, and futurist movements from French, Italian, Russian, Spanish, and Latin American perspectives, as well as local movements, such as Brazilian hallucinism. Influential, startling, unsettling, amusing, and continually engaging, these modernist manifestos give voice to a fascinating array of ideas and opinions that will prove invaluable to scholars and students of nineteenth and twentieth-century art, literature, and culture.

Download or read book Fixers written by Zrinka Stahuljak and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-02-16 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this book, Zrinka Stahuljak issues a challenge to scholars working in medieval studies to account for the history of translation, and to experts in translation studies to read the work of medievalists. Focusing on the term "fixer," she unpacks modern uses of the words "interpreter" and "translator" and restores them to their premodern origins: as an active agent who performed a wide range of tasks, as insider informant, local guide, broker of knowledge, and transmitter of art. For Stahuljak, the fixer was a multifunctional intermediary, not a mere translator or interpreter (in the restricted modern sense), but an enabler, facilitator, and mediator, the engine driving the exchange of multiple linguistic, social, cultural, and topographic forms of knowledge. She proposes a paradigmatic shift for both medieval literary history and for the history of translation to confront and interrogate each other in their core disciplinary practices, which promote national, political, and colonial agendas masked as neutrality. Surveying a variety of texts from 1250 to 1500, including crusade treatises and travel writings, accounts of pilgrims and spies, chronicles and romances in both prose and verse, and traversing an impressive range of languages, including Latin, Middle French, German, Italian, and Spanish, Stahuljak asks both medievalists and translation studies scholars to reconsider their assumptions and methods as a way to reconstruct a premodern, precolonial, inclusive world literature"--
Book Synopsis L'Antisémitisme Éclairé by : Ilana Zinguer
Download or read book L'Antisémitisme Éclairé written by Ilana Zinguer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume principally deals with perceptions on Jews dating from the beginnings of their emancipation to the Dreyfus Affair. The title in French, and the original title of the colloquium in Hebrew, ‘Enlightened Antisemitism’ not only reflects the overall anti-religious (anti-Christian and, hence, by necessity, anti-Jewish) sentiments of an Enlightenment figure such as Voltaire, but also refers to those who justified either their philosemitism or antisemitism with erudition: Johann David Michaelis, Antoine Guénée, Charles Maurras, etc. With France as its focal point, the volume also contains essays that treat various perceptions of Jews during the same period in England, Germany, and Italy. Interdisciplinary in nature, this collection of essays treats the Jewish question from historical, literary, and sociological angles.
Book Synopsis La science et le monde moderne d'Alfred North Whitehead? by : François Beets
Download or read book La science et le monde moderne d'Alfred North Whitehead? written by François Beets and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second international Chromatiques whiteheadiennes conference was devoted exclusively to the exegesis and contextualization of Whitehead's Science and the Modern World (1925). In order to elucidate the meaning and significance of this epoch-making work, the Proceedings are designed to form "companion" volume. With one paper devoted to each of its thirteen chapters, the Proceedings aim, on the one hand, to identify the specific contribution of each chapter to Whitehead's own research program - that is to say, to put its categories into perspective by means of an internal analysis- and, on the other hand, to identify its global impact in the history of ideas.
