Download or read book Burri inedito. Ediz. italiana e inglese written by Maurizio Calvesi and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1952 Umbrian artist Alberto Burri scandalized art critics and audiences worldwide with burned wood, flame-red paintings, dramatic combustions of plastic, and a black that was the color of tar. Indifferent to the twin temptations of modishness and the market, Burri made a name for himself first in the United States and then in his native Italy. "Burri: Seen/Unseen" sets out to reveal many of Burri's previously unknown works. As such, it bears wintess to Burr's ability to continually invent new combinations of forms and materials, and documents his love for small-scale formats*which serve as proof that nontraditional materials can be used even in the most minute and precise forms of painting. "Burri: Seen/Unseen" traces the artist's creative activity from his earliest works to his later years and provides an in-depth examination of his excursions into previously unexplored aesthetic territories.

Book Synopsis Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J. Paul Getty Museum by : Maria Lucia Ferruzza
Download or read book Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J. Paul Getty Museum written by Maria Lucia Ferruzza and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2016-01-25 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ancient world, terracotta sculpture was ubiquitous. Readily available and economical—unlike stone suitable for carving—clay allowed artisans to craft figures of remarkable variety and expressiveness. Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily attest to the prolific coroplastic workshops that supplied sacred and decorative images for sanctuaries, settlements, and cemeteries. Sixty terracottas are investigated here by noted scholar Maria Lucia Ferruzza, comprising a selection of significant types from the Getty’s larger collection—life-size sculptures, statuettes, heads and busts, altars, and decorative appliqués. In addition to the comprehensive catalogue entries, the publication includes a guide to the full collection of over one thousand other figurines and molds from the region by Getty curator of antiquities Claire L. Lyons. Reflecting the Getty's commitment to open content, Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J. Paul Getty Museum is available online at www.getty.edu/publications/terracottas and may be downloaded for free.

Book Synopsis Futurism and the Technological Imagination by :
Download or read book Futurism and the Technological Imagination written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, Futurism and the Technological Imagination, results from a conference of the International Society for the Study of European Ideas in Helsinki. It contains a number of re-written conference contributions as well as several specially commissioned essays that address various aspects of the Futurists’ relationship to technology both on an ideological level and with regard to their artistic languages. In the early twentieth century, many art movements vied with each other to overhaul the aesthetic and ideological foundations of arts and literature and to make them suitable vehicles of expression in the new Era of the Machine. Some of the most remarkable examples came from the Futurist movement, founded in 1909 by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. By addressing the full spectrum of Futurist attitudes to science and the machine world, this collection of 14 essays offers a multifaceted account of the complex and often contradictory features of the Futurist technological imagination. The volume will appeal to anybody interested in the history of modern culture, art and literature.

Book Synopsis A Treatise of Legal Philosophy and General Jurisprudence by : Michael Lobban
Download or read book A Treatise of Legal Philosophy and General Jurisprudence written by Michael Lobban and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first-ever multivolume treatment of the issues in legal philosophy and general jurisprudence, from both a theoretical and a historical perspective. The work is aimed at jurists as well as legal and practical philosophers. Edited by the renowned theorist Enrico Pattaro and his team, this book is a classical reference work that would be of great interest to legal and practical philosophers as well as to jurists and legal scholar at all levels. The work is divided The theoretical part (published in 2005), consisting of five volumes, covers the main topics of the contemporary debate; the historical part, consisting of six volumes (Volumes 6-8 published in 2007; Volumes 9 and 10, published in 2009; Volume 11 published in 2011 and volume 12 forthcoming in 2015), accounts for the development of legal thought from ancient Greek times through the twentieth century. The entire set will be completed with an index. Volume 7: The Jurists’ Philosophy of Law from Rome to the Seventeenth Century edited by Andrea Padovani and Peter Stein Volume 7 is the second of the historical volumes and acts as a complement to the previous Volume 6, discussing from the jurists’ perspective what that previous volume discusses from the philosophers’ perspective. The subjects of analysis are, first, the Roman jurists’ conception of law, second, the metaphysical and logical presuppositions of late medieval legal science, and, lastly, the connection between legal and political thought up to the 17th century. The discussion shows how legal science proceeds at every step of the way, from Rome to early modern times, as an enterprise that cannot be untangled from other forms of thought, thus giving rise to an interest in logic, medieval theology, philosophy, and politics—all areas where legal science has had an influence. Volume 8: A History of the Philosophy of Law in The Common Law World, 1600–1900 by Michael Lobban Volume 8, the third of the historical volumes, offers a history of legal philosophy in common-law countries from the 17th to the 19th century. Its main focus (like that of Volume 9) is on the ways in which jurists and legal philosophers thought about law and legal reasoning. The volume begins with a discussion of the ‘common law mind’ as it evolved in late medieval and early modern England. It goes on to examine the different jurisprudential traditions which developed in England and the United States, showing that while Coke’s vision of the common law continued to exert a strong influence on American jurists, in England a more positivist approach took root, which found its fullest articulation in the work of Bentham and Austin.
