Book Synopsis Dante and the Romantics by : A. Braida
Download or read book Dante and the Romantics written by A. Braida and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-09-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Romantic poets were among the first to realise the centrality of the Divine Comedy for the evolution of the European epic. This study explores the significance of Dante for Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Keats and William Blake. What was their idea of Dante? Why did they feel the need to approach his Christian epic on the afterlife? This study aims to answer these questions by focusing on the three poets' preoccupation with form and language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary with the Romantic generation, peer of Keats, Holderlin, and Goethe, and forerunner of Valéry and Pound, Ugo Foscolo is nevertheless little known outside Italy. In an endeavor to "discover" this exemplary European poet for English-speaking readers, and to "rediscover" him for Italian readers, Glauco Cambon examines both textually and contextually Foscolo's major works and their inextricable connection with his life, his philosophy, and his aesthetic principles. Originally published in 1980. Download or read book The Shade of Homer written by David Ricks and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-11-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In exploring the significance of Homer for the poetry of modern Greece - benign shade or looming shadow? - Dr Ricks is tackling a theme that has implications for the study of poetic influence in general. In this 1989 book, he takes the work of Sikelianos, Cavafy and Seferis and subjects a selection of poems to a careful scrutiny. These poems are not imitations of Homer but fresh engagements with Homeric themes, and comparison of the modern versions with the original is found to be illuminating for the poets' methods of composition. Dr Ricks does not lose sight of the larger significance of his subject, and modern poets from outside Greece - Eliot and Pound, in particular - find their way into the discussion. All Greek is translated and the reader has no need to be a specialist in modern or in ancient Greek to find this study absorbing and instructive.

Book Synopsis Ugo Foscolo and English Culture by : Sandra Parmegiani
Download or read book Ugo Foscolo and English Culture written by Sandra Parmegiani and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The history of the literary relations between Italy and England has its most celebrated early modern representative in Ugo Foscolo (1778-1827). Foscolo's translation of Laurence Sterne's A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy is often regarded as the benchmark of his English experience, but there is more - around and beyond his relationship with Sterne - that can be uncovered. With over 3,000 letters spanning three decades, Foscolo's correspondence represents a unique perspective from which to monitor his literary, philosophical, and political views. The 'Epistolario' is also a space in which Foscolo engages with literary, philosophical, and moral questions, and a place where he exercises an often private form of literary criticism. These are letters which ultimately produce one of the most complete yet most composite self-portraits in the history of modern Italian autobiography. In the first comprehensive and historicized reading of Foscolo's correspondence, Sandra Parmegiani reveals the rich and complex relations between the Italian writer and the literature, philosophy, and culture of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century England."

Book Synopsis The Printed Homer by : Philip H. Young
Download or read book The Printed Homer written by Philip H. Young and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek poet Homer was one of the greatest and most influential poets of all time. His epicIliadandOdysseywere the foundation of Greek education and culture in the classical age ("Our earliest infancy was entrusted to the care of Homer," said Heraclitus 2500 years ago) and are widely read today. Nothing is known of Homer's life (some even doubt his existence) or of the composition of the two epics but we can assume that the texts that survive are not as they were originally formed in oral tradition. This is a publishing and translation history of the written forms of theIliadand theOdyssey. It first considers who Homer might have been and then explores the when and how of the creation of the written forms of the works. The Homeric text in classical times and in medieval Europe and the Byzantine Empire, and the Homeric text, the printing press and Renaissance humanism are next taken up. The successes and failures of the many who attempted to translate the works are analyzed critically and then-a major portion of the book-all the known texts, editions and translations of theIliadand theOdysseyfrom 1470 to 2000 are listed. Finally, the author considers the future of the Homeric texts and the Poet's relevance to this and future generations. Seven valuable appendices (e.g., Modernizing of Latin City Names; First Printings in Vernacular Languages), a bibliography, and an index complete the work.
